Isabella Rossellini

Her father Roberto Rossellini, her mother Ingrid Bergman. She started as a model, but quickly moved to acting, where her career was diverse; White Nights, Blue Velvet, Cousins, Death Becomes Her, Immortal Beloved, Big Night, and 30 Rock.

Acting accolades aside, her true passion is wildlife conservation. In 2008 appeared in the comedy documentary web series Green Porno. She also serves on the Boards for the Central Park Conservatory, Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society, Howard Gilman Foundation, and the United Nations Children's Fund.

Now, she is back on top as Sister Agnes in the internationally acclaimed film, Conclave.

She doesn't need Hollywood, Hollywood needs her.

by Anonymousreply 1October 26, 2024 3:26 PM

best of the best!

by Anonymousreply 2October 26, 2024 3:27 PM

Can you say anything bad about her?

She is naturally beautiful, graceful, kind, and a good actress. She works to preserve wildlife, restore old films, feed hungry children, and keep local opera houses afloat.

The projects she choses are projects SHE wants to do. Not what some executive tells her.

by Anonymousreply 3October 26, 2024 3:29 PM

I always considered her more beautiful than her mother, and that’s saying something.

by Anonymousreply 4October 26, 2024 3:29 PM

I met her a few times at the Gateway Playhouse on Long Island. She was lovely in both personality and looks.

by Anonymousreply 10October 26, 2024 3:58 PM

So great to see her performing again.

by Anonymousreply 11October 26, 2024 4:20 PM

Told this story before. Went to see a Broadway show. My friend's cousin worked the show so he went backstage after to say thanks and hello. The theatre's stage door shared some others in an ally. So I'm standing there waiting when i dropped my Playbill and it hit the ground open in the centerfold. It was a two page ad with Rosselini for Lancombe. I bent over and picked it up and looked at the person next to me who saw the whole thing and it was Isabella and we both laughed at what the chances of that happening

She's a good egg and it seems like her twin is too. What happened to their parents was abhorrent but the kids turned out well.

by Anonymousreply 16October 26, 2024 6:49 PM

I like her vibe.

by Anonymousreply 17October 26, 2024 6:51 PM

Yeah her twin sister Isotta is an academic. Got her PhD at Columbia then taught at NYU, I think.

Such a different life than her beautiful, model famous actress twin sister and her star parents.

I have sympathy for her twin - she must have been overlooked a lot. She's very pretty in her own right.

One of the considerable pleasures of youtube is finding interviews with old stars like Ingrid Bergman. How foolish of me not to go see her at the Shubert(I think) when she appeared there when I was young.

by Anonymousreply 23October 26, 2024 7:40 PM

She's one of the few celebrities I follow on Instagram and she always comes across as lovely and down to earth. Clearly adores her family and her mama.

by Anonymousreply 24October 26, 2024 7:42 PM

She doesn't take herself too seriously

by Anonymousreply 25October 26, 2024 7:50 PM

She seems to do what she wants and not care about the consequences. I mean, didn't she become a veterinarian at one point? Why? Because she wanted to.

I'll never forget that Polish celebrity housekeeper who got arrested for stealing from her employers (Candice Bergen and Robert de Niro among others) - she said Isabella Rossellini was the only client of hers she never stole from, because she was the only one who treated her with respect.

by Anonymousreply 28October 26, 2024 8:52 PM

R12 -- that's a great story!

A friend of mine lives in the same town as her on Long Island. He has had numerous occasions of meeting her (he works for the city). This friend is a crotchety guy but he can't say enough about her: Unpretentious, kind, lovely, with a quick laugh.

by Anonymousreply 29October 26, 2024 8:58 PM

Well, it’s obvious: Isabella Rossellini must be canonized as the Patron Saint of DL. Someone fetch the holy water and a Gucci pallium, let the canonization commence!

by Anonymousreply 30October 26, 2024 9:24 PM

R30 you sound sarcastic

by Anonymousreply 31October 26, 2024 11:33 PM

She really is a model for aging gracefully; she's probably had some work, but it's subtle. She's a bit hefty these days, but you can still see the beauty she once was. She looks like a person who is comfortable with who she is not & someone still trying to be 25

by Anonymousreply 32October 27, 2024 12:08 AM

R16 what happened to her parents?

by Anonymousreply 33October 27, 2024 12:13 AM

[quote] I always considered her more beautiful than her mother, and that’s saying something.

I once went to hear her and her sister Ingrid speak at Princeton for the centenary celebration of their father in thr 1990s.

Ingrid, her fraternal twin, looked exactly like her mother,. She was actually a lecturer in the Princeton romance Languages department at the time,. She was frumpily dressed, like any academic, but still beautiful,.

But Isabella, who looked like the average of both of her parents, was the true stunner. She was dressed in couture and professionaly made up. She was unforgettably gorgeous,.

by Anonymousreply 39October 27, 2024 12:34 AM

Had she not been Italian she would have been a real cunt. She’s European in her style and outlook. She’s down to Earth and will gladly call a spade a spade. She’s always been refreshingly honest, even about her own shortcomings. I wish she would work with David Lynch and Martin Scorsese again. They are still good friends. I know David is sick these days though.

Her mother, by all accounts, was also a lovely person and must have raised her children right.

by Anonymousreply 48October 27, 2024 10:00 AM

I don’t think she “became a veterinarian at one point.” That requires several years of education and training.

by Anonymousreply 49October 27, 2024 10:22 AM

As a young gayling i ripped her Lancome ads out of magazines and carefully collected them in a binder.

Blue Velvet was the first artsy fartsy movie i ever saw in my life and Isabella crooning that song in a blue spotlight will forever be part of expanding my uptight cultural horizon.

Yes, she adopted her black son.

by Anonymousreply 51October 27, 2024 7:25 PM

She said that she hasn’t done many films because her accent was always a hindrance. They couldn’t cast her as a daughter of a typical American family because they’d never be able to explain why she sounded the way that she does. I wonder if she ever tried to lose her accent or at least cover it up for acting. She said that she purposely didn’t get into acting or directing because of her parents. She started out as a costume designer. Then she modeled and a photographer said that she should be a ln actress because she acted for the photos he was capturing. She directs now too. She was great in The Tracey Ullman Show. Had a regular gig on the show for a while.

by Anonymousreply 52October 27, 2024 7:29 PM

It was actress Jan Smithers who became a veterinarian.

by Anonymousreply 59October 30, 2024 11:11 PM

She also criticized Lancome when they gave her the boot for looking too old.

by Anonymousreply 60October 30, 2024 11:36 PM

It was inspired casting that Isabella played Jack's ex-wife on 30 Rock. The character is marvelous and hearing Rossellini say, "Oh dammit Johnny you know I love my big beef and cheddar." referencing some Arby's franchise they own is classic.

[quote] They couldn’t cast her as a daughter of a typical American family because they’d never be able to explain why she sounded the way that she does.

I once saw her in a Berkshires production of "Paris Bound." They added a line where a character preemptively explained that "she spent her childhood in Europe and is hardly American."

by Anonymousreply 62October 31, 2024 12:28 AM

The fact that she cannot act worth shit has never bothered me much.

She's like seeing Charles Coburn stumble into the scene. Always a delight, similar to smelling Camembert.

I'm betting she's nominated for a Featured Actress Oscar for CONCLAVE. It's a small part without many lines and she's not especially great but it's just so wonderful seeing her back on the big screen. I think Academy nominators will feel the same.

by Anonymousreply 65October 31, 2024 1:28 AM

She deserves to win for Conclave!

by Anonymousreply 99January 25, 2025 1:19 PM

She IS Isabella Rossellini!

by Anonymousreply 100January 25, 2025 1:26 PM

R99 Yes, her Instagram feed is excellent. One day she’s hauling goats out of a chicken coop and filming a nest of spiders and the next she’s on a red carpet in some bejeweled robe. This broad really lives life in her own terms. It’s really inspiring to see the quality of projects coming to her (Chimera, Problemista, Conclave). She’s very smart, fearless, fortunate, all at once.

by Anonymousreply 101January 25, 2025 1:48 PM

She is great. Yes, she is a nepo baby but is very upfront about it, mentions her parents often, with pride and longing. She is a very nice and interesting person, and am happy for this second wind for her career.

by Anonymousreply 102January 25, 2025 3:02 PM

And, of course, it must be mentioned that she is aging so gracefully. If she's had any plastic surgery, it's very minor. She justifiably seems very proud of her wrinkles and full figure.

BRAVA Isabella!! She was clearly raised well.

Conclave sucks DONKEY BALLS- What am I missing?

Loved her in Death Becomes Her. I wish her role had been longer.

by Anonymousreply 107January 26, 2025 2:22 AM

R88, I don’t think that she was ever married to Lynch. I read that he broke up with Isabella because he couldn’t tolerate the smell of her cooking. I have no idea if that is true or not, but it’s true that Lynch apparently had a strong aversion to cooking odors.

by Anonymousreply 108January 26, 2025 3:11 AM

Lynch cheated on Isabella and ended their relationship in a harsh way, telling her over the phone that he never wanted to see her again. I’m glad for Isabella’s sake that they were able to be friends later but I was disappointed that Lynch treated her like that. I’ve seen a lot of comments from people following Lynch’s death that tend to idealize him as an affable eccentric, but he didn’t have a good track record in his personal life and sounded very difficult to live with.

by Anonymousreply 109January 26, 2025 3:50 AM

R109 Lynch himself has said as much. It has to be tough to share a life with anyone that idiosyncratic. It speaks to her character that she was able to be above it and saw him for the man he was.

by Anonymousreply 110January 26, 2025 4:45 AM

maybe "cooking" was code for "breath"...or even "pussy."

Hey, you never know.

by Anonymousreply 112January 26, 2025 4:58 AM

by Anonymousreply 113January 26, 2025 5:17 AM

R107, Universal really should release a director's cut of Death Becomes Her, with the original ending and deleted scenes. There are a couple of extra scenes with Lisle Von Rhuman that didn't make the final cut.
