A little off-topic: I'll never forget back in the late 80s when my ex mother-in-law was CONVINCED that there was something in Slim Fast that actually helped you lose weight and refused to believe it was the calorie restriction part of the program ("2 shakes a day plus a sensible meal") that actually resulted in weight loss.

During the height of her success, she was handing out terrible advice. "Fat makes you fat!" was complete bullshit. She had dieters substitute carbs for fat, when, of course, it's carbs that truly make you fat.

The no-fat diet craze of the early 1990s was pretty pervasive, and I'm ashamed to admit I bought into it at the time. The rationalization was that calories and carbs could be ignored because the body burned them all up during the course of the day. I had a paperback book that listed the number of fat grams in all types of food and grocery products, and I dutifully looked up each item in my daily menu to ensure I stayed under the magic number of 20 grams. I did lose 30 pounds, but it was more about the portion control and healthier choices that came along with the fat avoidance.

I recall there being rumors that she did hard drugs like crack or meth during the height of her 90s fame. I assume those were false, but I vaguely recall her coming up in conversation in the early 2000s and someone repeating the same rumors, so it probably came from somewhere.

I just saw her on a Dark Side of the 2000s episode on Vice channel. The episode was about the rise of infomercials. She was featured along with some white guy who went to prison a couple of times for claims that whatever he was selling was a cure for what ails ya. Kevin something? She said she walked away when she realized it was all about her persona and not being/getting healthy. She didn't talk about her finances, IIRC.

This is what happens when people who are wholly unprepared for it become famous.

Her personality was pretty intense (high energy) for drinking beer all day (which she admits to). I would not be surprised if she was using meth for energy and to keep her weight down, as well. Beer is a pretty high-calorie thing to drink, compared to other forms of alcohol.

I’ve been looking for Susan all of my life!

I’m pretty sure I left this story on another DL thread about Powter from years ago. Here it is again.

At some point in the late 80s/early 90s Powter lived in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.

There was a Whole Foods supermarket on Lower Greenville in Dallas, when WF were a new thing (I think it started in Austin) and was more overtly healthy and organic than what it became later. Friends of mine worked there.

They were always telling me stories about the crazy customers that they had to deal with and they believed health food stores attracted obnoxious people.

There was one customer they told me about that was incredibly entitled, loud, demanding and always causing a scene that, “…had hair like Annie Lennox.” She was apparently especially bad and all the staff and managers loathed her.

By 1991 I lived in New York and they told me once when they visited that that one crazy customer at work with the Annie Lennox hair was famous now. “She has that infommercial where she yells ‘Stop the insanity!’ That’s that woman!”

When Twitter was a big thing but still kind of knew she had an interesting presence on it.

She’d tweet random, non-specific things about healthy organic foods she was eating right then like, “Eating white peaches under a full moon.” Or, “These carrots, oh my god.” That was the only kind of thing she would tweet. It was a little repetitive but I found it unusual and kind of poetic.

Then when the #metoo thing happened her tweets went off the rails on all that and her tweets got crazier and crazier and then she disappeared off Twitter.

I remember hearing an interview with her around 2012 and she seemed sane then. That’s sad
