It can be a smart move because of the state of the race, r11. My comment wasn't a criticism of the decision.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | October 14, 2024 7:52 PM |
With the race so close, it's worth going on FOX. The small risk of a gaffe or infident due to a hostile grilling is worth it for her to reach a different audience. If she were solidly ahead, it wouldn't be. Just tell them f off That's the point.
I'm sure there will be cries from the left that she is better than FOX, but it's the right move for her.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 14, 2024 8:00 PM |
Fox News is more popular than you guys think. CNN has completely ruined their reputation in the Trump era and MSNBC, even though they are the best and most factual, the hosts are just too far left for most of America. A lot of regular older white people keep the channel on Fox News, as all as many business offices. It’s a smart move.

This could go OK for her, and I'm optimistic. Mostly because Brett Baier is conservative but fair-ish, and because Trump is so often his worst enemy, and he will probably incite a new round of the GOP civil war in vehemently attacking Fox.
Also the idea that it's a "sign of weakness" that Harris is going on Fox? The whole freaking world knows that the race is super tight. No shame in Harris saying so openly, and expressing her intention to speak personally and directly to as many American voters as possible in this crucial moment.

Have the Democrats become the party of fear instead of issues and ideas? If Harris loses, there may be a debate on whether or not it was the right strategy to run on fear instead of campaigning on issues. Fear didn’t stop Trump from winning in 2016 and it almost didn’t stop him from winning reelection in 2020.

MSNBC's opinion shows (the primetime block) are more liberal-leaning, but the news is straight-up news. They don't slant the news in the way that Fox even slants the news. Also, Fox provides no balance. You would never find types like Scarborough, Geist, Mitchell, Tur, and Wallace on Fox.

There is no reason for her to do FOX if she thinks she has it in the bag. It's amazing how many are unwilling to understand politics or accept even the possibility that she might not be doing as well with voters as she should be. Trump sucks, but you don't have to shut off your brains. It's not like real discussion will change the outcome one way or the other. Nothing we say here is going to leak out. Whatever. My mistake for commenting on a political thread a month before the election. Moving on to better threads.

This aspect feels so different from Hillary Clinton 2016, to compare our only two women who are/were within reach of the US Presidency. Clinton turned out to be mistaken about her weakness and Trump's strength across the US electorate. Harris is under no illusions about how tight the race is; she is showing up repeatedly in the battleground states, and she's reaching out across so many forms of media for every last vote she can possibly gain.
I don't feel 100% that Harris will win, but I feel >60%, and her campaign is doing so many things right. Very proud to be a few $$ poorer on her (and their) behalf.
by Anonymous | reply 106 | October 15, 2024 11:56 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 107 | October 15, 2024 11:57 PM |
One of the many differences between the Vice President and Secretary Clinton is that Clinton seemed inevitable. The feeling of inevitability hurt her. From Day 1, the Vice President has been saying that she is the underdog in this race, and she's been running like she's 5 points behind instead of a couple of points ahead. If she loses, it's not for a lack of hard work. She's fighting for this.

by Anonymous | reply 119 | October 16, 2024 2:03 PM |
R119 that is awesome. Trump has spent the past several years demonizing early voting and trying to stop it for nefarious reasons. To spell that out: If no early voting, then the Georgia GOP can use structural racism to make all the Black voters face the prospect of standing in 4 hour lines on Nov 5, and having no other choice.
He recently flip flopped and wants his base to vote early and by mail but that’s after years of attacking it and Fox/wingnut media participating in the attacks. Meanwhile Harris has an army of volunteers in GA getting her base to vote early. So this is a great sign that she might pull off a narrow win like Biden did.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | October 16, 2024 2:17 PM |

R123, that poll raises questions in the article. How can Gallup find that 46% of Dems and 31% of Republicans plan to vote early, but now Harvard/Harris finds that 48% of early voters say they voted Trump vs 47% say they voted Harris.
We’ll have to wait for more and clearer data.

Just finished watching it - she certainly held her own. He was trying to have a 'gotcha moment' and she wouldn't let him have one. Now the chuckleheads at FOX are disssecting the interview and finding fault that we 'still don't know who she is'. What more do they want ? She answered every question clearly and coherently. Maybe it was the questions Baier asked that they weren't happy with - and he's the FOX interviewer.

This is the thing that's interesting.
Kamala had a great performance at the Convention. She destroyed Trump at the debate. Meanwhile Trump is ever more unhinged, sounding more crazy than ever.

SHE resorts to word salads and goes off on tangents?!
Here's the thing. This overbearing knucklehead of an interviewer continually interrupted Harris as she spoke, and did so to such an extent she had to keep verbally swatting at him and talk over him. And when she talked about her plans going forward, he seconds later asked how she would be different from Biden, despite the fact that her previous response answered that question - demonstrating he was pretty much ignoring her responses.
Overall I thought she did a good job of going toe-to-toe with him, and I liked that eventually she was talking over HIM when it was obvious her responses didn't matter.
As I said on another thread on this interview, everyone should press Trump on appearing on Lawrence O'Donnell's show.
BTW if you want to see what real word salad looks like, try to make sense out of Trump's recent salad bar at the link:

When I am continuously interrupted by someone who has asked me a question (this is always at work) I stop speaking and watch them while they eventually run out of blather then say “If you’re going to interrupt me when I am providing an answer to a question that you’ve just posed, it makes me wonder what was the point of the question / makes me think that you don’t like my answer. Why is that?”.
Then I resume. It almost always shuts them down, especially if there’s an audience, which there usually is for these twats.
Of course I know that Harris dealing with Fox is in a whole other stratosphere - but they’re welcome to it!

As I suggested in R183, she WAS in fact responding to questions but was constantly interrupted by a hostile interviewer. So given that, I can't imagine anyone being able to provide the answers you want because she wasn't questioned by a normal journalist.
My link was to contrast her "word salad" as you put it to a real word salad - and on top of that someone not only not facing a hostile interviwer (or any interviewer) but in fact talking an adoring audience.

When Martha Raddatz on ABC interrupted JD Vance and wouldn't let him complete his response to a question, he used a different tactic to turn it around and embarrass her. He was able to mock her point that it was only a small number of apartment complexes in Colorado that are now ruled by Venezuelan gangs. Maybe Harris could have tried doing something similar.

I expect Brett Baier to be biased but he's usually a smooth operator.
He says that the Harris team cut short his allotted time and he was rushed. He felt Kamala was taking her time, that she was filibustering to play out the interview, limiting the number of questions he could ask. Whatever. That may have been true, but he didn't handle it in a skillful way.

Who is the weirdo at R208? Is it the same thing at r201? Because that’s who I’m about to respond to.
The first question wasn’t even a question, it was an attempt at a gotcha moment right from the beginning. He didn’t want real information, he just wanted to catch her. And she didn’t fall for it.
And I hate when someone asking a questioning doesn’t get the answer they want so they say “I haven’t finished asking my question,” then changes tactics. Maybe he would have had more time if his questions weren’t two minute run on sentences.

There are two things more I wish she would have done:
1. I WISH she had called Trump not just unstable but WEAK as well, like she has in other interviews this week. That would have been beautiful to hear on Fox.
2. This is just a fantasy, but I’d love to have had her say at then end, “Thank you so much. This was great, I’ll be happy to come back anytime to finish this conversation.” Totally marking her territory on Trump’s playground.

VP Harris owned Bret Baier, and Fox News.
It happened the moment she agreed to the interview.

Brett Baier looked like he was staring down a freight train during the interview, no matter how he tries to justify his weak attempts at mansplaining to the sitting Vice President of the United States.
And the sheer number of MAGA trolls vociferously denying that she made her points, along with the Fox News analyst begrudgingly admitting that she did well shows another victory in uncharted territory for a woman who will likely be the first female POTUS.

From Mark Cuban:
"The beautiful thing about the .@BretBaier interview is that .@KamalaHarris understood and responded to each question.
She used examples of policies. She gave real world context.
When Brett went hard after her. She didn’t call him names. She didn’t quit the interview. She didn’t make things up. She never once complained the questions were tough. She never played the victim card. She didn’t lose her temper. She didn’t take the bait to diminish or talk down to Trump supporters.
She stood up to him with force and never backed down.
He has been the President and campaigning for 9 years. Kamala Harris has caught up to him in just 100 days . That speaks volumes.
It’s why people want to vote for her. That’s why so many Republicans and Independents are supporting her
She is everything her opponent is not and will never be.

Conway would know; they are his peers. His friends and relatives. His people.
"I want to repeat something I've tweeted before, that .@gtconway3d spoke to masterfully on Morning Joe this morning: There's a strong segment of the Fox audience base that is addicted. Their addictions are to the Fox "trump is competent' narrative or the "lib-owning" narrative and they get dopamine rushes when these addictions are reinforced. As George says - these people will not likely be swayed by Harris' one-time appearance. They're addicted.
But George also said that there are many others who KNOW they're not getting the full truth from Fox, and they KNOW that Trump is divisive, and exhausting, and some even notice his decline. And Harris did a good job scoring points with THEM and showing who she is as an alternative, by comparison. I couldn't agree with this more.
People should realize - simple math - and you've heard me say this before - any time there is a group that is tens of millions large, it's NOT homogenous. It can't be. There are gradations. Trump voters are not all the same. Fox watchers are NOT all the same. We see the craziest 2 to 5% of them way more often than we see the others.
I'm so glad Harris did this interview."

[quote] Using an objective consensus how did she do?
Is an objective analysis possible? From what I observe on X and media headlines, the Republicans appear to be greatly celebrating because they believe she did poorly. Although there is some Democratic praise for her performance, most of the Democratic response appears to be about Baier’s questioning rather than cheering how Harris did. From that, I would have to say that it was a net negative for her.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | October 17, 2024 6:16 PM |
R233, thank you but I was looking more for a personal assessment based on the interview itself. As for SM and supposed public perception, the right will always tear her apart and the left will praise her to kingdom come. I was wondering how she handled the questions and if she held her own against Baier.

[quote] I was looking more for a personal assessment
How would that be “objective”?
by Anonymous | reply 235 | October 17, 2024 6:28 PM |
R235, by putting preferences aside and viewing through an objective lens. When I say "personal assessment" I meant by an individual not through an overview of social media reactions.

I'm not one of those DLers who gets carried away by my spank me, diva syndrome.
She was very well served by her prosecutor mode. Turning that catch into a save on the enemy within clip was a masterpiece of determination and intelligence. To catch that in the middle of everything else. Impressive.
She demonstrated strength. She wasn't slick but she was obviously determined.
She was dogged, as usual, by accusations of a lack of specificity (not wholly unfair) and weaker answers in trickier areas (like the border, how are you not a continuation of the Biden administration.) I do not know how, at this point, she hasn't got lines to put those fuckers to bed, but it always seems to trip her up at least a bit.
Not once did his gotcha work and he tried and tried and tried. She was not having it. Even in her worst moment she had it going on over him.
It wasn't a game changing interview but it was a damned impressive showing if your ears and mind were open. This was about optics. She went into the lion's den and she came out alive. Did she shift anybody? Hard to say. It is Fox. Maybe a few.
But she survived - very, very well. First do no harm.

Kamala wiped Bauer on the floor. Fantastic interview on Fox.
by Anonymous | reply 239 | October 17, 2024 7:59 PM |
Objectively I thought she was strong. Whether someone agrees with her or not, you saw that she is a fighter and won’t get pushed around. I did like the line around immigration that out of the two people running for president she is the only one who has actually prosecuted and gone after cartels and protected American people, something that can get you easily killed, others have been.
I also liked how dismissive she was of stupid questions like the trans issue and the clip they played. She made the point that in the larger scale of things, this issue is SO remote - and Trump spent 20’million dollars on that ad. That kind of info, knowing how much he spent, she had at the ready and came back with he’s wasting money on silliness to drum up fear. Especially as she said, Trump followed the exact same law.
And dismissive of the “when did you first notice Biden’s decline?” She was like - what the fuck does that have to do with the price of tea in China? She said Biden is not on the ballot. That was another “gotcha” question shoehorned in at the last minute to try and prove what, I don’t know - that she lied to the American people about the president of the United States, her boss?
It’s crazy how they try and trip her up about lying when Trump gets away with lying 40 times in one speech and no one bats a lash.
She did drive home that he has no plan.
by Anonymous | reply 240 | October 17, 2024 8:43 PM |
They used a similar trans ad throughout the midterms in 2022. To no real effect.

Not true; what I'm seeing on Democratic and centrists outfits is praise of her strength and incisiveness, along the lines of R240's post.

Why Kamala Harris is Happy with the Fox Interview
[QUOTE]“Tactically, Harris can score points by highlighting the Baier interview to show she is not afraid to go into red territory and take hard questions, while Trump hides and ducks debates and tough interviews,” said Jim Kessler, co-founder of the left-center think tank Third Way.
[QUOTE]”She used examples of policies. She gave real world context,” Mark Cuban said on Twitter. “When [Baier] went hard after her. She didn’t call him names. She didn’t quit the interview. She didn’t make things up. She never once complained the questions were tough. She never played the victim card. She didn’t lose her temper. She didn’t take the bait to diminish or talk down to Trump supporters.”
[QUOTE]The interview netted 7.1 million viewers and during the roughly half hour segment, Harris was able to show off aspects of her personality and insert talking points about her plans, like for affordable housing and small business expansion.
[QUOTE]She worked to get her message across, which largely involved criticism of Trump. That effort was considered a win by her campaign because viewers tuned in who may not have watched her previous interviews, let alone her recent rallies.

I voted early - for the Blue team over the Orange one.
The more I here Kamala speak, how she's pushing forward with her campaign and her deftness in her FOX interview (among the others) I think she will make a kick-ass president. I just hope the undecided voters (really, they're still undecided?) realize she's the hope we need now.

Betting markets are based on profit. They're adjusting odds, based on bets placed, to make sure they win no matter the outcome. It's not a prediction of who will win, it's a reaction to how overseas people are betting.
by Anonymous | reply 263 | October 18, 2024 1:25 PM |
And you'd reckon - totally snobbery here - the kind of people who bet are on some level more personally disposed to Trump. It's hard to imagine many East coast or blue wall Liberal leaners betting at all.

R260 I personally love to hear curses slip in politics and journalism. It makes it more authentic, because we all know everyone in Washington curses like sailors when they're not on air.
One of Kamala's recent TV ads (the one that used the clip of Trump shit-talking Detroit) uses the word 'goddamn'. THAT one was shocking to me.

I'm not sure what kind of "confidence" you are trying to conjure up, if it's not the origin of "CON" men who prey upon greedy people who want A LOT for next to nothing, and yet, are stupidly confident in people who want to rob them blind and manipulate the casino (or their "wallet" containing all sorts of crypto secrets and delicacies, according to Trump’s newest huckster stream of income)
I can't because I'm a U..S. citizen. Did you miss that crucial piece about betting on the outcome of U. S. elections, more precisely -- who cannot?

R274 - rich douchebros and the wealthy gamblers in general will place bids on both sides and play up betting high/more on one party in particular, maybe even switching back and forth. It's a strategy to get a lot of stupid people to follow their lead. The rich will make money no matter who actually wins because they're rich and can afford to throw money away manipulating the stakes. All that to say that no, you shouldn't rely on the betting markets for any kind of a clear picture because the odds/stakes are always being massaged by those significantly richer than most betting.
