In a Michael Caine Mood

What are the best Michael Caine films? Have recently seen The Italian Job, Alfie and the awesomely ridiculous killer bee movie.

Love Dressed to Kill and Educating Rita.

What would you suggest?

by Anonymousreply 32August 18, 2025 9:27 PM

The Man Who Would be King is fun.

Get Carter (the first one)

Sleuth (the first one)

California Suite

Deathtrap

Educating Rita

Hannah and Her Sisters

The Cider House Rules

Quills

The Quiet American

Children of Men

Youth

Alfie. There was a time it seemed like he was in every movie. Wonderful actor.

by Anonymousreply 3October 12, 2024 2:22 AM

He's one of the most annoying actors of all time-- the male version of Katharine Hepburn.

by Anonymousreply 4October 12, 2024 2:28 AM

I love him. Anything. Watch anything he's in. Even in his dotage he is brilliant. I like the small British films where is is an elderly schemer.

by Anonymousreply 5October 12, 2024 2:42 AM

His second Oscar is bullshit. He hustled hard for that one.

by Anonymousreply 6October 12, 2024 2:50 AM

Zulu, Children of Men, Hannah and her Sisters, Deathtrap

by Anonymousreply 7October 12, 2024 2:59 AM

I even liked Caine in the last Austin Powers movie.

Who ever thought that one day, Caine and Beyoncé would share a movie screen together?

by Anonymousreply 8October 12, 2024 3:18 AM

He was magnificent in “Educating Rita”.

by Anonymousreply 9October 12, 2024 3:19 AM

I second The Quiet American.

by Anonymousreply 10October 12, 2024 3:21 AM

Love the suggestions everyone. Thank you!

by Anonymousreply 11October 12, 2024 3:34 AM

[quote]and the awesomely ridiculous killer bee movie.

Caine's not great in it, but Zulu is an excellent film.

The Ipcress File is a good B&W British spy thriller from the 1960s. Amazing now to see how post-Blitz London still looked in the early 60s.

DIRT TAY ROH TEN SCOUNDRELS

by Anonymousreply 17October 12, 2024 2:00 PM

I think Children of Men is a masterpiece, I think I've seen it 5 or 6 times. Caine is great but it's a minor role that Sean Connery or Ian McKellen or any ageing British actor could've done.

I highly recommend Harry Brown.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a lighthearted watch and an absolute delight. I rewatch it at least once a year.

by Anonymousreply 19October 12, 2024 3:59 PM

Op here. I love his highly varied mix of work, spanning decades. Last night I got stoned and made a poor choice, which was Beyond the Poseidon Adventure. Caine gives and gives but can’t save this mess.

I will have to review this thread for better ideas.

by Anonymousreply 20October 13, 2024 2:03 AM

Noises Off.

He’s hysterical as the frustrated director.

by Anonymousreply 21October 13, 2024 2:06 AM

I found Deathtrap and rented it. Caine was quite sexy back then. Christopher Reeve was really good looking, but I’d have rather had some rumpy pumpy with Caine.

I was glancing thru his autobiography at the library.

He seemed to think Educating Rita was his best work. Sounded a bit bitter he didn't win the Oscar for it. Made a point of saying how it was four British actors against Robert Duvall so Duvall won. Also said he has never seen Tender Mercies.

by Anonymousreply 23August 16, 2025 9:27 PM

He and Duvall worked together on "The Eagle Has Landed" and "Secondhand L:ions." Caine said Duvall is a brilliant actor and nice guy, but has a short fuse; when a pub ran out of lobster at lunch, Caine said Duvall punched out a glass door pane with his bare fist. Good thing he won his Oscar that night.

On his first visit to the USA to do the movie 'Gambit' he tells about being recognized by John Wayne in the lobby of the Beverly Hills Hotel.

You can have fun watching one of his first film appearances, as a Nazi. THE TWO-HEADED SPY (58), directed by one-eyed Andre de Toth. On Youtube and Tubi.

by Anonymousreply 26August 16, 2025 10:45 PM

Get Carter (1971)

by Anonymousreply 27August 16, 2025 10:47 PM

Mona Lisa, a debatable character

by Anonymousreply 28August 16, 2025 10:49 PM

California Suite .... but only for the segments with Caine and Maggie Smith.

by Anonymousreply 29August 16, 2025 10:56 PM

GAMBIT with Shirley Maclaine

by Anonymousreply 30August 18, 2025 6:51 PM

He's fun in Miss Congeniality

by Anonymousreply 31August 18, 2025 7:47 PM

He impresses me as a big star who doesn't take himself too seriously, and treats people nicely.
