The Fog (1980)
Just watched this film for the first time in years last night. It holds up okay because it's a pretty "small" film as it is. The ambiance is nice, but the whole avenging lost gold thing was very corny.
Also, Adrienne Barbeau is not a good actor. Jamie Lee Curtis looked just like Geri Jewell did on The Facts of Life. I was always confused why John Carpenter continually cast the underwhelming Tom Atkins in so many projects.
Nancy Loomis has the worst line readings in the history of acting, but she looked much prettier in this than she did in Halloween and the negativity she constantly conveys worked for the character. Loomis would have been perfect to play Debbie Downer in a movie version of the SNL sketch.
Janet Leigh aged very quickly, as this film was only twenty years after Psycho and she looked like an old lady.

Supposedly, Jamie was a bitch to Adrienne on the set because Jamie was good friends with the producer Debra Hill, whom John Carpenter had left for Adrienne.
I think the movie deserves a better reputation, but coming on the heels of Halloween, it was deemed as inferior at the time. But it's very atmospheric and has some genuine scares. And no, Adrienne gives a good performance as a nighttime DJ (she has the perfect voice for it).

It could have been a good movie had it had better special effects, and had John Carpenter not written such a disproportionately large role for his wife Adrienne Barbeau, who just wasn't up to it.

His movie The Thing 1982 is the one to watch.

I loved this movie as a kid when I watched it in the theater alone. Anyway, not long ago I came across an old horror movie (I think from the 60s) that was about vengeful ghosts from a deliberately sunk ship that come ashore to terrorize the town's descendants who caused their death. Well, shit. I guess John came up with the leper part for added creeps. Still, the movie holds up nicely and is a fun watch. And it's immensely better than that steaming pile remake that got lost in its own CGI and screwed up the backstory for no real reason.

I never thought this was scary.

Many people do. Personally I never found The Exorcist to be scary, yet it's regarded as a classic horror movie.

Stevie Wayne's K.A.B. Radio 1340, Antonio Bay, California.
A playlist of the 14 eclectic easy-listening, mostly jazz tracks (actually inexpensive library music selections) used in the 1980 John Carpenter film.
(At the conclusion of the first track, David Lindup's 'Take It Steady,' click on 'Playlist (14)' at the bottom of the video window, and it will take you to the full playlist.)

I recently watched this movie; it was like Carpenter contacted his neighbors and said "wanna be in a movie?" instead of hiring professional actors. Even Hal Holbrook - always hammy, but at least somewhat credible - was laughable bad. I can imagine Carpenter telling people "I cast Nancy as the mean bitch (again). She won't even have to act - if she could!"
That sad, it was still better - if for no other reason than the camp value - than the remake.

I revisited this a year or so ago after having not watched it in maybe 15 years, and I liked it more than I remembered. There really isn't much to it, but the small town coastal atmosphere is indelible and largely what makes it so watchable for me. It's not scary, but it is a classic ghost story in every sense of the term.

Fog can be eerie and sometimes has a supernatural vibe, and I think this movie capitalizes on that well. It's far from Carpenter's best work, but I've always found it to have a charm of sorts.

It was the era of John Houseman commercials ("Smith-Barney. They make money the old-fashioned way: they 𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛 it"), so seeing Houseman as Old Mr Machen* telling the story of the wreck of the Elizabeth Dane was an unexpected delight.
*Named after Arthur Machen, the pen name of a Welsh supernatural fantasy writer from whom H.P. Lovecraft drew inspiration. Other Lovecraftiana that turns up in the film would be dialogue concerning the search for the missing boat Seagrass: "a sweep south from 𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑦 Point around 𝐴𝑟𝑘ℎ𝑎𝑚 Reef."

This movie always divides horror fans of a certain generation. It’s not Carpenter’s best, but its strengths carry it through. I’ve watched it many times and always enjoy it.

Maybe Carpenter used Atkins a lot because Tom Atkins was hot as FUCK! That 70s porn stache he often rocked was pure gold. That daddy ALWAYS got my motor running

Janet Leigh had the chain smoking-cocktails-laying by the pool without SPF look. Great lady though.

Proof positive of why terrible remakes of cult favorites is a terrible thing. I'm also looking at you, Poseidon (2006) and Omen (2006)

The Tom Welling remake was shit. Carpenter’s original is adequately spooky and was lensed beautifully (as usual) by Dean Cundey. The two of them together could do no wrong.
