German tourist dies in shark attack while sailing in a catamaran off Spain's Canary Islands

[quote]The 30-year-old woman lost a leg in the attack and died of a heart attack later while being transported in a Spanish rescue helicopter.

[quote]Shark attacks are extremely rare in the area, only six such attacks have been recorded in the area since records began in the 16th century. Earlier this year, terrifying video footage showed a shark charging towards beachgoers on a beach in Gran Canaria.

Unbelievable footage. Look what terrifying speed it achieves in seconds, and so close to the shore as well.

He needed a bigger boat.

by Anonymousreply 2September 18, 2024 5:51 PM

^* she

by Anonymousreply 3September 18, 2024 5:51 PM

So did the shark yank her off the catamaran or was she swimming?

by Anonymousreply 4September 18, 2024 5:54 PM

How did this happen if she was on a boat? Did the shark come up from under the netting? Or was she pushed into the water?

Oh - wait - I'm thinking of large catamarans - apparently there are small ones. Kind of like in Jaws 2.

by Anonymousreply 5September 18, 2024 5:54 PM

Maulface thread.

by Anonymousreply 6September 18, 2024 5:55 PM

I died for NOTHING. People never learn.

by Anonymousreply 7September 18, 2024 5:56 PM

r4 She might have just popped her leg in the water to relax for a bit, as one does. Terrifying.

by Anonymousreply 8September 18, 2024 5:56 PM

The boat was nearly 300 miles off shore so this was an ocean-going cat and the attack was not near land. It’s not uncommon to jump overboard to cool off for a bit when the boat is not underway/becalmed.

by Anonymousreply 9September 18, 2024 5:59 PM

R9 - yeah, i'm never going on anything 300 miles off shore that isn't a big ass cruise ship.

by Anonymousreply 10September 18, 2024 6:23 PM

I told you I was hardcore

by Anonymousreply 11September 18, 2024 6:53 PM

Absolutely vile beasts of the ocean deep!

by Anonymousreply 12September 18, 2024 6:56 PM

Why can't the fucking Haitians eat the right animals.

by Anonymousreply 13September 18, 2024 8:06 PM

R13 UGLY low IQ comment.

by Anonymousreply 14September 18, 2024 8:14 PM

Yeah she most likely had her legs dangling in the water and the shark came up and took a big ole bite.

You have to respect the ocean. When we are out there away from the protections of society humans are just another animal in the circle of life.

by Anonymousreply 15September 18, 2024 8:20 PM

Why do people think the ocean is just a big ol' lake?

by Anonymousreply 16September 18, 2024 8:28 PM

Apparently she was out swimming next to the catamaran. This is the boat she was on.

No way in HELL would I be out on this little thing 300 miles away from shore. Particularly that far away on the coast of Western Africa.

Another trust fund nepo never learned.

by Anonymousreply 18September 18, 2024 9:22 PM

No way would I get into the water 300 miles offshore.

by Anonymousreply 19September 18, 2024 9:35 PM

Seriously who in the HELL goes 300 miles offshore in a catamaran?? Wow

by Anonymousreply 20September 18, 2024 9:37 PM

"Yum!" the 🦈 exclaimed!!

by Anonymousreply 21September 18, 2024 9:48 PM

Jesus Penis. No way in HELL am I ever jumping into deep ocean water like that.

I've pretty much given up on even swimming in the ocean either. I live near the Sonoma Coast and there is plenty of shark activity here. No thank ye.

by Anonymousreply 22September 18, 2024 9:53 PM

Those people in the R1 footage just stand and watch. I would be OUT of there.

by Anonymousreply 23September 19, 2024 2:12 AM

I mean, it's not like the shark was going to jump out on dry land, r23. The whole beach was closed due to the shark threat and those people were specifically there to observe it.

But yeah, I would at the very least flinch at that terrifying sight.

by Anonymousreply 24September 19, 2024 5:45 AM

If there was no danger why are there people screaming?

by Anonymousreply 25September 19, 2024 5:50 AM

Sharks are among the few living things who find German food tasty.

by Anonymousreply 26September 19, 2024 5:58 AM

Footloose footloose. Kick off your Sunday shoes.

by Anonymousreply 27September 19, 2024 6:07 AM

Even the sharks are sick of the tourists.

by Anonymousreply 28September 19, 2024 6:45 AM

R14, It's humor. Morbid humor.

by Anonymousreply 29September 19, 2024 12:57 PM

Swimming 300 miles offshore? As the kids would say, tell me you want to win the Darwin Award without telling me you want to win the Darwin Award.

The frau probably got off on the danger of it all.

[Quote] Earlier this year, terrifying video footage showed a shark charging towards beachgoers

That’s a hammerhead chasing a ray — that’s how they corner the rays. It wasn't “charging toward” the beachgoers ffs.

by Anonymousreply 31September 19, 2024 1:11 PM

R26- and NO ONE finds English food tasty

by Anonymousreply 32September 19, 2024 1:12 PM

r31 Are the rays really swimming meters away from the shore, though?

by Anonymousreply 33September 19, 2024 1:16 PM

Like I just said r33, that’s how they corner the rays.

by Anonymousreply 34September 19, 2024 3:30 PM

Yes r33, yes they are. Have you not spent time on a beach?

The people screaming were just little kids whose minds were exploding at seeing it up close, not because they were in any mortal danger. I do agree that father was standing too close for comfort. Once in a great while, a shark charges so fast that they over shoot and do actually come out of the water (they manage to flop themselves back in, but thus is rare). So that dad was slightly irresponsible, though the odds were low.

Sharks are fast, how is this shocking? How else would they catch anything? Yes you’re fucked if you’re in the water and you get charged like that. There’s no escape at that point.

by Anonymousreply 35September 19, 2024 5:05 PM

He must have been wearing his Lucky Bratwurst.

by Anonymousreply 36September 19, 2024 5:07 PM

The guy is too close to the water, for sure.

by Anonymousreply 37September 19, 2024 5:28 PM

Of course sharks are fast. Do people think they should move at the pace of fat Americans from the Midwest?

by Anonymousreply 38September 19, 2024 5:53 PM

She tasted just like weiner schnitzel!

by Anonymousreply 39September 19, 2024 5:57 PM

She was in the shark's house. Fucked around and found out.

by Anonymousreply 40September 19, 2024 6:01 PM

R33 yes, rays really do get that close. I stepped on one when I was a kid, because he was the same color as the sand and being a kid I wasn't paying a lot of attention. It was 30 years ago and I can still feel it moving under my feet. Shudder.

by Anonymousreply 41September 19, 2024 6:09 PM

I love sharks

by Anonymousreply 42September 19, 2024 6:12 PM

If you’ve spent much time around German tourists, you’d thank 5he shark.

by Anonymousreply 43September 19, 2024 7:13 PM

That’s some kind of naive, to go for a swim out in the open ocean next to your little boat. Cruncha muncha!

by Anonymousreply 44September 19, 2024 7:19 PM

R43, she was probably correcting the shark about breaking a rule, mid-shark bite.

by Anonymousreply 45September 19, 2024 7:24 PM

Open ocean…..No way!!!!

300 miles from shore!!!

By herself!

Tiny flimsy boat!

she was mentally unstable and had no regard for her personal safety.

by Anonymousreply 46September 19, 2024 8:04 PM

I don’t like swimming in the ocean at all.

by Anonymousreply 47September 19, 2024 8:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 51September 19, 2024 11:13 PM

Would the limb/blood loss somehow result in a heart attack, or was she literally scared to death?

by Anonymousreply 52September 19, 2024 11:28 PM

Regarding the ray, let me just reiterate that they are not usually swimming in the surf.

Hammerheads absolutely gobble up rays like popcorn, and the rays naturally object. So the shark will pursue the fleeing rays and, because rays are flat, one way for them to escape is to swim into the surf. Being flat, they can stay more mobile in extremely shallow water. (Turtles do this too, for a different reason though.)

But sometimes this escape strategy is the ray’s undoing. It might find itself with nowhere to go and the sharks mouth waiting for it.

Here’s an example. This is the sort of thing that happens around the world where great hammerheads and rays coexist. Note you can see the shark but not the ray — that is why the ray flees to the shallows.

Oddly enough, when they did the autopsy, they found apples up her ass.

Those crazy Germans.

by Anonymousreply 56September 20, 2024 12:43 AM

Same thing happened to me on a Florida vacation, R41. I’m not sure my parents believed me. There was a sandbar so I wasn’t super close to shore, but I certainly wasn’t far out. I was walking, not swimming, so the water was no more than waist high. I stepped on it and immediately realized the texture was wrong and jumped off. Then I looked down and saw it shake a thin layer of sand off itself and sort of “take off” from the bottom. Almost like a bird flapping wings.

Weird how I still remember it over four decades later. It made an impression.
