German tourist dies in shark attack while sailing in a catamaran off Spain's Canary Islands
[quote]The 30-year-old woman lost a leg in the attack and died of a heart attack later while being transported in a Spanish rescue helicopter.
[quote]Shark attacks are extremely rare in the area, only six such attacks have been recorded in the area since records began in the 16th century. Earlier this year, terrifying video footage showed a shark charging towards beachgoers on a beach in Gran Canaria.

Unbelievable footage. Look what terrifying speed it achieves in seconds, and so close to the shore as well.

So did the shark yank her off the catamaran or was she swimming?

How did this happen if she was on a boat? Did the shark come up from under the netting? Or was she pushed into the water?
Oh - wait - I'm thinking of large catamarans - apparently there are small ones. Kind of like in Jaws 2.

r4 She might have just popped her leg in the water to relax for a bit, as one does. Terrifying.

The boat was nearly 300 miles off shore so this was an ocean-going cat and the attack was not near land. It’s not uncommon to jump overboard to cool off for a bit when the boat is not underway/becalmed.

R9 - yeah, i'm never going on anything 300 miles off shore that isn't a big ass cruise ship.

Yeah she most likely had her legs dangling in the water and the shark came up and took a big ole bite.
You have to respect the ocean. When we are out there away from the protections of society humans are just another animal in the circle of life.

Apparently she was out swimming next to the catamaran. This is the boat she was on.
No way in HELL would I be out on this little thing 300 miles away from shore. Particularly that far away on the coast of Western Africa.

Jesus Penis. No way in HELL am I ever jumping into deep ocean water like that.
I've pretty much given up on even swimming in the ocean either. I live near the Sonoma Coast and there is plenty of shark activity here. No thank ye.

Those people in the R1 footage just stand and watch. I would be OUT of there.

I mean, it's not like the shark was going to jump out on dry land, r23. The whole beach was closed due to the shark threat and those people were specifically there to observe it.
But yeah, I would at the very least flinch at that terrifying sight.

That’s a hammerhead chasing a ray — that’s how they corner the rays. It wasn't “charging toward” the beachgoers ffs.

Yes r33, yes they are. Have you not spent time on a beach?
The people screaming were just little kids whose minds were exploding at seeing it up close, not because they were in any mortal danger. I do agree that father was standing too close for comfort. Once in a great while, a shark charges so fast that they over shoot and do actually come out of the water (they manage to flop themselves back in, but thus is rare). So that dad was slightly irresponsible, though the odds were low.
Sharks are fast, how is this shocking? How else would they catch anything? Yes you’re fucked if you’re in the water and you get charged like that. There’s no escape at that point.

R33 yes, rays really do get that close. I stepped on one when I was a kid, because he was the same color as the sand and being a kid I wasn't paying a lot of attention. It was 30 years ago and I can still feel it moving under my feet. Shudder.

Regarding the ray, let me just reiterate that they are not usually swimming in the surf.
Hammerheads absolutely gobble up rays like popcorn, and the rays naturally object. So the shark will pursue the fleeing rays and, because rays are flat, one way for them to escape is to swim into the surf. Being flat, they can stay more mobile in extremely shallow water. (Turtles do this too, for a different reason though.)
But sometimes this escape strategy is the ray’s undoing. It might find itself with nowhere to go and the sharks mouth waiting for it.
Here’s an example. This is the sort of thing that happens around the world where great hammerheads and rays coexist. Note you can see the shark but not the ray — that is why the ray flees to the shallows.

Same thing happened to me on a Florida vacation, R41. I’m not sure my parents believed me. There was a sandbar so I wasn’t super close to shore, but I certainly wasn’t far out. I was walking, not swimming, so the water was no more than waist high. I stepped on it and immediately realized the texture was wrong and jumped off. Then I looked down and saw it shake a thin layer of sand off itself and sort of “take off” from the bottom. Almost like a bird flapping wings.
Weird how I still remember it over four decades later. It made an impression.
