British films

The Greatest British films of all times thread got me interested in recommendations for films.

any similar films to Darling, the Servant or The Pumpkin Eater?

I think 60s British cinema was fascinating and all the players involved. Alan Bates, Julie Christie, Terence Stamp, James Fox and Bogarde are some of my favourites.

The Pumpkin Eater included an intense scene featuring Yootha Joyce, who later became very famous as Mildred Roper, in the UK comedy series Man About The House, later remade as Three’s Company. There was a spinoff, George and Mildred, which was equally successful.

Anne Bancroft was so beautiful in The Pumpkin Eater, in some ways reminiscent of Angelina Jolie.

I always like the scene in DARLING when Dirk Bogarde says to Julie Christie: "I don't send whores away in taxis."

Or whatever the plural of that word is.

And there's always Georgy Girl!

by Anonymousreply 4September 14, 2024 9:45 PM

And The Leather Boys.

This was a pretty insightful commentary by a Schlesinger. I wonder who the model that Diana Scott was based on is. Fascinating to think Paul Newman was almost involved, i think it’s perfectly cast with Christie, Bogarde and Harvey. Not sure who else I could see playing Diana.

I thought the actress Dawn Addams might have inspired the Diana character.

I'm still pissed Daring isn't available for purchase on any streaming services.

by Anonymousreply 8September 14, 2024 10:18 PM

Darling*

by Anonymousreply 9September 14, 2024 10:18 PM

What do you think would have become of Darling’s Diana? Suicide, divorce and re-marriage? Living to an old age ans a socialite and contributing to documentaries about the swinging 60s?

by Anonymousreply 10September 14, 2024 11:10 PM

It's on Prime.

Among The Pumpkin Eater cast is the incomparable Eric Porter as the pyschiatrist.

"Nothing but the Best" (1964) is definitely worth seeing. Stars Bates and screenplay is by Frederic Raphael, who wrote "Darling."

Not a British film, per se, but check out The Damned (1969).

Luchino Visconti filmed a tragic opera about anti-Semitism, money, murder, sex, suicide, drugs, homosexuality, incest, and a myriad of other salacious ongoings with a well to do German family.

The ensemble includes Ingird Thulin, Helmut Griem, Helmut Berger, Charlotte Rampling, and Dirk Bogarde

Okay r15 you made me think of VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED.

by Anonymousreply 16September 15, 2024 12:33 AM

R16 That is good, too. George Sanders is underrated.

by Anonymousreply 17September 15, 2024 12:36 AM

He was hot circa Rebecca.

by Anonymousreply 18September 15, 2024 12:41 AM

Hitchcock was the best director of all time. Considering he became sort of an American thing, Michael Power and Eric Pressburguer easily win on better British movies.

by Anonymousreply 19September 15, 2024 12:45 AM

By the way. The Damned (La Caduta del Dei) is a great movie but as far as any British film as is possible.

by Anonymousreply 20September 15, 2024 12:47 AM

Trashy and I'm not even sure it is British but I have a huge soft spot for JANE EYRE with Susanna York and George C Scott.

by Anonymousreply 21September 15, 2024 12:51 AM

can't forget THE KILLING OF SISTER GEORGE.

I know I'm not the only fan on DL. I get many ww's when I quote it with an appropriate signature

by Anonymousreply 22September 15, 2024 12:56 AM

R20 Very true, but Dirk Bogarde is a great British actor

by Anonymousreply 23September 15, 2024 1:14 AM

[quote]It's on Prime.

Not for purchase.

R13 I actually did catch Nothing But the Best recently. I thought it was pretty good considering I’d never heard of it before a month ago and I’m a pretty big Alan Bates fan.

by Anonymousreply 25September 15, 2024 3:51 AM

Bri-ish.

by Anonymousreply 26September 15, 2024 3:55 AM

The Go Between (1971)?

Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Margaret Leighton, Edward Fox, Michael Gough, and Michael Redgrave

by Anonymousreply 27September 15, 2024 4:27 AM

I love The Go Between and Accident for the same reasons, both have this simmering tension under the surface of these perfect looking English Summer days.

by Anonymousreply 28September 15, 2024 4:53 AM

R15 this is indeed a great movie. Not quite what I had in mind when I started this thread but still great.

by Anonymousreply 29September 15, 2024 4:55 AM

If you haven't already, may be worth having a look at

Libel Room At The Top Victim Saturday Night and Sunday Morning

by Anonymousreply 30September 15, 2024 5:15 AM

^I listed these on separate lines. Not sure why it's come out this way.

by Anonymousreply 31September 15, 2024 5:18 AM

^ You need to hit return twice to put a space between them.

by Anonymousreply 32September 15, 2024 6:52 AM

Room At The Top.

Simone Signoret ran away with the whole film. She was the best thing in it. A marvellous actress.

by Anonymousreply 33September 15, 2024 8:27 AM

R33 The little discussed sequel Life at the Top is also worth watching. Jean Simmons kinda cornered the market for a while playing unhappy housewives. Also played similar women in The Happy Ending and Say Hello to Yesterday

by Anonymousreply 34September 15, 2024 9:20 AM

Barry Lyndon (first and foremost)

Black Narcissus

Trainspotting

Peeping Tom

A Clockwork Orange

Maurice

by Anonymousreply 35September 15, 2024 11:19 AM

Yes I was going to say Peeping Tom - so I'll just see your Tom and raise you Smashing Time with Rita Tushingham and Lynn Redgrave.

"You stay here and keep eating - I'll go downtown and get an apartment and a modeling job and be right back."
