Kathy Bates is barely recognizable

Time to pull back from the Ozempic, Kathy. Too thin.

It's just the extremely harsh lighting that makes her look like a corpse. Chantal Anderson needs to go back to photography school.

by Anonymousreply 1September 8, 2024 6:53 PM

People who have been stocky, fluffly, hefty, husky, straight up fat and obese have been waiting for this moment their entire lives. They want to see how they look as a thin person. Because the image has been floating in their head, the possibilities of it all, since most of them were kids.

by Anonymousreply 2September 8, 2024 7:04 PM

R2 “Because the image has been floating in their head, the possibilities of it all, since most of them were kids.”

Complete sentences, please!

by Anonymousreply 3September 8, 2024 7:09 PM

Good for her. No thin person ever goes "I want to be fat again". It's almost as if thin people were happier with themselves, contrary to what the fat activists will tell you.

by Anonymousreply 4September 8, 2024 7:10 PM

There have been other photo of her recently, It's not lighting. She does indeed look like Ozempic has done a number on her face.

by Anonymousreply 5September 8, 2024 7:12 PM

There's thin, and then there's gaunt. She's gaunt.

The woman is 76. She looks fine.

by Anonymousreply 8September 8, 2024 7:20 PM

My GOD! That NYT article is overwrought! It begins with Kathy Bates...alone on a sofa, sobbing...and ends with Kathy Bates...quietly weeping.

by Anonymousreply 9September 8, 2024 7:20 PM

NYT is a shit rag

by Anonymousreply 10September 8, 2024 7:21 PM

You tried it r3.... Although it's not the greatest to start a sentence with "Beacause" a complete sentence can be formed that using it as the opener.

but for you - "Because the image has been floating in their head since most of them were kids"

by Anonymousreply 11September 8, 2024 7:25 PM

“Pain, pain, pain, pain, pain,” she said between courses. “Do I have the right to feel this pain? When I was given so much?”

Fucking hell, she’s sounding insufferable. Does Ozemoic make you batshit?

by Anonymousreply 12September 8, 2024 7:25 PM

Joan Rivers hated her. Kathy snubbed her because of a joke Joan made. She’s always been up her own ass.

by Anonymousreply 13September 8, 2024 7:29 PM

Holy shit!! Who TF is [bold]that[/bold]??

Creepy.

by Anonymousreply 14September 8, 2024 7:33 PM

Did that writer want us to hate Kathy Bates? Because I've always liked her, and now I think she sounds insufferable. I think there must be something wrong with her; why else would she think it's okay to say things like this about her work: “It becomes my life,” she said. “Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent. Because I can’t hold it back, and I just want my life.”

by Anonymousreply 15September 8, 2024 7:46 PM

My favorite was the Jessica Lange section who told the interviewer that if Kathy was in a good mood, the dinner would go well…if Kathy was not in a good mood, then “good luck to you”

by Anonymousreply 16September 8, 2024 7:48 PM

She’s a true Roy Orbison fan

by Anonymousreply 17September 8, 2024 7:52 PM

The obsession to be thin and young.

The plastic surgery has taken away her essence, who she was, the great character parts she played.

She resembles an aging Barbra Walter’s — sad.

No doubt this transformation has taken a toll on her mentally. She was an extremely successful actress . But her desire to be thin trumped everything.

And who is she now ? She’s gotta know that at 3 in the morning when she wakes up and sees herself in the mirror . This is the result of all her hard years of training and acting and getting good parts even though she was never the ideal body type. Well she is now

by Anonymousreply 18September 8, 2024 8:10 PM

She has some sort of autoimmune disorder that caused painful swelling in her arms and legs. She had to wear compression sleeves and then get extremely painful massages in order to drain the fluid and be able to work according to something I read a few years ago. Maybe the weight loss was mandatory in order to be able to work and perhaps live.

by Anonymousreply 19September 8, 2024 8:14 PM

Now, you listen to me, Mr. Grand High Poobah of Upper Buttcrack, I'm just about half-past give a shit with your fun and games.

by Anonymousreply 20September 8, 2024 8:22 PM

I liked during her stint on Six Feet Under- THAT was the Kathy Bates we know. This Kathy Bates- the photo of her in character on the new Matlock she looks very much like Aunt Bee from The Andy Griffith Show.

by Anonymousreply 21September 8, 2024 8:22 PM
THAT was the Kathy Bates we know

Speak for yourself, r21. Personally, I've never met her.

by Anonymousreply 22September 8, 2024 8:25 PM

Her body isn't thin, though her face is haggard.

by Anonymousreply 23September 8, 2024 8:31 PM

She lost 60 pounds.

by Anonymousreply 24September 8, 2024 8:37 PM

She should have an Oscar for Delores Claiborne.

Thank you for reminding me r20.

by Anonymousreply 25September 8, 2024 8:58 PM

Her oscar for Misery is one of the most deserved. I had read the book before the movie came out and she was a perfect choice. Nailed it.

by Anonymousreply 26September 8, 2024 9:01 PM

She says she has everything she prayed for and "It's exhausting," and then the reporter (Roxane Gay?) reiterates that Bates' "work ethic is exhausting."
“I have no right,” she said. “I see the state of the world, and here I am sitting in a posh restaurant in a posh town with a posh career, going home to a posh house, and what right do I have to cry?” But she would cry. And then she would stop. There would be dessert...

And there would be Ozempic. Actors and NYT reporters are exhausting.

by Anonymousreply 27September 8, 2024 9:11 PM

On behalf of Miss Bates, perhaps you could adjust your experience of what she looks like now as her real appearance, and see her former look as the one that did not resemble her. Now she recognizes herself.

Perhaps you could check your Barbie® Fashion mirror and see if things actually check out. The results can explain a lot.

by Anonymousreply 28September 8, 2024 9:11 PM
She resembles an aging Barbra Walter’s

Barbara Walter's [bold]what?[/bold]

by Anonymousreply 29September 8, 2024 9:14 PM

In 1989 she came to Chicago right before Misery came out and starred in the stage play Frankie and Johnny At The Claire De Lune at Victory Gardens (before it got ruined as a poorly cast movie). She got naked, and I was 15 feet away - and she was not thin but not disgusting either - although the Trib said she was not much to look at (ouch). Now I know she was 41 then and I thought she was younger.

fun fact: she appeared on a Love Boat episode

by Anonymousreply 31September 8, 2024 9:27 PM

More fun fact: she was on AMC as the crazy lady prisoner inflicting hell on Erica Kane.

Eh, she's 76 years old. I would cut her a break(no pun intended). I can trash other celebrities, but I find it hard to do the same to Ms.Bates. OP, you better start showing some appreciation for an acting icon, MISTER MAN!

by Anonymousreply 33September 8, 2024 9:47 PM

She had a pretty face even when she was chunky.

by Anonymousreply 34September 8, 2024 9:49 PM

R32 that is almost a direct steal from Y&R when Janice Lynne got sent to the looney bin.

Bates also auditioned for Janet on Three's Company.

by Anonymousreply 35September 8, 2024 10:22 PM

Bonnie franklin also appeared in a touring production of Frankie and Johnny around that time.

Did Bonnie get naked?

by Anonymousreply 36September 8, 2024 10:26 PM

Her not getting on Oscar for Dolores Claiborne was probably the most egregious Oscar mistake ever. The whole cast should have gotten one. Especially the girl who played young Selena.

by Anonymousreply 37September 8, 2024 10:37 PM

Let’s just say DC was very underrated —that’s a more fair statement.

by Anonymousreply 38September 8, 2024 10:41 PM

Al Sharpton looked better fat too.

by Anonymousreply 39September 9, 2024 12:31 AM

r22 " Personally, I've never met her. "

As opposed to professionally?

by Anonymousreply 40September 9, 2024 1:23 AM

r11 "can be formed that using it"

Oh ok

by Anonymousreply 41September 9, 2024 1:35 AM

I would think Bates would probably act to her grave, but judging from the article she doesn’t seem too happy with it, and can’t seem to enjoy the fruits of her labor. Shame. Such a big fan of this wonderful actress. I wish her the best in her retirement after Matlock.

by Anonymousreply 42September 9, 2024 1:55 AM

As long as she doesn't pull a Sharon Stone, and show us her deflated ass, we're ok.

by Anonymousreply 43September 9, 2024 2:19 AM
It's just the extremely harsh lighting that makes her look like a corpse.

Actually no she’s really a corpse

by Anonymousreply 44September 9, 2024 2:30 AM

Kathy was quite thin in Men Don't Leave with bestie Lange. I still remember her as Erica's cellmate in AMC. Imagine going from that to an Oscar.

by Anonymousreply 45September 9, 2024 2:42 AM

Julianne Moore went from good & bad twins to an Oscar

by Anonymousreply 46September 9, 2024 2:46 AM

I love her.

In About Schmidt she showed her colors.

by Anonymousreply 47September 9, 2024 2:49 AM

R39- Al Roker looked better FAT too.

I liked FAT Al Roker

I don't like SKINNY Al Roker

by Anonymousreply 48September 9, 2024 2:55 AM

She should've been handed an Oscar for Dolores Claiborne. She wasn't even nominated.

by Anonymousreply 49September 9, 2024 3:32 AM

I always gotten LESBIAN vibes from her just like my Lesbidar says that Glen Close and Sigourney Weaver are LESBOS.

By the way I'm a HOMO myself.

by Anonymousreply 50September 9, 2024 12:04 PM

r50 All your THREADS and posts are STUPID and POINTLESS

by Anonymousreply 51September 9, 2024 12:27 PM

Profile in the NYT yesterday because of her new TV show, 'Matlock.' Can't tell if it's the usual NYT hit job, or just a bad interview, or if she's a bad interviewee.

In any case, she seems unpleasant. Or unbalanced. Or both. It was disappointing.

She's certainly been underappreciated as a great actress. She may feel the same.

Maybe it was a bad day.

by Anonymousreply 55September 9, 2024 1:10 PM

R52

So sorry. I thought I was on the 'Kathy Bates RETIRING after Matlock' thread. Didn't think there's be TWO KATHY BATES THREADS.

Geesh.

by Anonymousreply 56September 9, 2024 1:24 PM

What a sad interview/article. Didn't think she'd be this highly reflective, sensitive, intelligent.. Wish she could understand how many people absolutely adore her.

But if you don't love yourself, you will never believe that anyway.

by Anonymousreply 57September 9, 2024 1:43 PM

She looks terrible. I wonder what her breasts look like now. I remember them practically sagging down to her knees in "About Schmidt."

by Anonymousreply 58September 9, 2024 4:17 PM

Actually, I think she looks fantastic.

by Anonymousreply 59September 9, 2024 4:46 PM

She talks like a person with borderline personality disorder.

by Anonymousreply 60September 9, 2024 5:58 PM

Kathy's performance circa 1983 in "Night Mother was quite something.

She should have been in New York more / only twice on Broadway and less than 10 times off broadway.... all before Oscar win.

Did she ever do live stage work in LA?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 61September 9, 2024 7:39 PM

She did regional theater and off Broadway for many years, which doesn't pay shit. She really struggled, and of course she had to hear from casting agents etc. that she was overweight and plain every five minutes. It's a brutal business.

She tried Hollywood a couple of times but had trouble getting cast in things, Misery didn't happen until she was over 40. The studio didn't want her in Misery - Rob Reiner had to fight for her because he knew she was perfect for the role. The studio wanted Bette Midler, if you can believe it. Midler would've been awful and turned the movie into a campfest.

by Anonymousreply 62September 9, 2024 8:02 PM

I think she does need therapy. It sounds like she’s too into her feelings but is also aware of it.

by Anonymousreply 63September 9, 2024 8:12 PM
We talked about her roll.

Crescent, cross or cinnamon?
