Time to pull back from the Ozempic, Kathy. Too thin.
It's just the extremely harsh lighting that makes her look like a corpse. Chantal Anderson needs to go back to photography school.

People who have been stocky, fluffly, hefty, husky, straight up fat and obese have been waiting for this moment their entire lives. They want to see how they look as a thin person. Because the image has been floating in their head, the possibilities of it all, since most of them were kids.

R2 “Because the image has been floating in their head, the possibilities of it all, since most of them were kids.”
Complete sentences, please!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 8, 2024 7:09 PM |
Good for her. No thin person ever goes "I want to be fat again". It's almost as if thin people were happier with themselves, contrary to what the fat activists will tell you.

There have been other photo of her recently, It's not lighting. She does indeed look like Ozempic has done a number on her face.

My GOD! That NYT article is overwrought! It begins with Kathy Bates...alone on a sofa, sobbing...and ends with Kathy Bates...quietly weeping.

NYT is a shit rag
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 8, 2024 7:21 PM |
You tried it r3.... Although it's not the greatest to start a sentence with "Beacause" a complete sentence can be formed that using it as the opener.
but for you - "Because the image has been floating in their head since most of them were kids"

“Pain, pain, pain, pain, pain,” she said between courses. “Do I have the right to feel this pain? When I was given so much?”
Fucking hell, she’s sounding insufferable. Does Ozemoic make you batshit?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 8, 2024 7:25 PM |
Joan Rivers hated her. Kathy snubbed her because of a joke Joan made. She’s always been up her own ass.

Holy shit!! Who TF is [bold]that[/bold]??
Creepy.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 8, 2024 7:33 PM |
Did that writer want us to hate Kathy Bates? Because I've always liked her, and now I think she sounds insufferable. I think there must be something wrong with her; why else would she think it's okay to say things like this about her work: “It becomes my life,” she said. “Sometimes I get jealous of having this talent. Because I can’t hold it back, and I just want my life.”
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 8, 2024 7:46 PM |
My favorite was the Jessica Lange section who told the interviewer that if Kathy was in a good mood, the dinner would go well…if Kathy was not in a good mood, then “good luck to you”

The obsession to be thin and young.
The plastic surgery has taken away her essence, who she was, the great character parts she played.
She resembles an aging Barbra Walter’s — sad.
No doubt this transformation has taken a toll on her mentally. She was an extremely successful actress . But her desire to be thin trumped everything.
And who is she now ? She’s gotta know that at 3 in the morning when she wakes up and sees herself in the mirror . This is the result of all her hard years of training and acting and getting good parts even though she was never the ideal body type. Well she is now
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 8, 2024 8:10 PM |
She has some sort of autoimmune disorder that caused painful swelling in her arms and legs. She had to wear compression sleeves and then get extremely painful massages in order to drain the fluid and be able to work according to something I read a few years ago. Maybe the weight loss was mandatory in order to be able to work and perhaps live.

Her oscar for Misery is one of the most deserved. I had read the book before the movie came out and she was a perfect choice. Nailed it.

She says she has everything she prayed for and "It's exhausting," and then the reporter (Roxane Gay?) reiterates that Bates' "work ethic is exhausting."
[quote]“I have no right,” she said. “I see the state of the world, and here I am sitting in a posh restaurant in a posh town with a posh career, going home to a posh house, and what right do I have to cry?” But she would cry. And then she would stop. There would be dessert...
And there would be Ozempic. Actors and NYT reporters are exhausting.

On behalf of Miss Bates, perhaps you could adjust your experience of what she looks like now as her real appearance, and see her former look as the one that did not resemble her. Now she recognizes herself.
Perhaps you could check your Barbie® Fashion mirror and see if things actually check out. The results can explain a lot.

In 1989 she came to Chicago right before Misery came out and starred in the stage play Frankie and Johnny At The Claire De Lune at Victory Gardens (before it got ruined as a poorly cast movie). She got naked, and I was 15 feet away - and she was not thin but not disgusting either - although the Trib said she was not much to look at (ouch). Now I know she was 41 then and I thought she was younger.

Eh, she's 76 years old. I would cut her a break(no pun intended). I can trash other celebrities, but I find it hard to do the same to Ms.Bates. OP, you better start showing some appreciation for an acting icon, MISTER MAN!

R32 that is almost a direct steal from Y&R when Janice Lynne got sent to the looney bin.
Bates also auditioned for Janet on Three's Company.

Her not getting on Oscar for Dolores Claiborne was probably the most egregious Oscar mistake ever. The whole cast should have gotten one. Especially the girl who played young Selena.

I would think Bates would probably act to her grave, but judging from the article she doesn’t seem too happy with it, and can’t seem to enjoy the fruits of her labor. Shame. Such a big fan of this wonderful actress. I wish her the best in her retirement after Matlock.

Profile in the NYT yesterday because of her new TV show, 'Matlock.' Can't tell if it's the usual NYT hit job, or just a bad interview, or if she's a bad interviewee.
In any case, she seems unpleasant. Or unbalanced. Or both. It was disappointing.
She's certainly been underappreciated as a great actress. She may feel the same.
Maybe it was a bad day.

Kathy's performance circa 1983 in "Night Mother was quite something.
She should have been in New York more / only twice on Broadway and less than 10 times off broadway.... all before Oscar win.
Did she ever do live stage work in LA?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | September 9, 2024 7:39 PM |
She did regional theater and off Broadway for many years, which doesn't pay shit. She really struggled, and of course she had to hear from casting agents etc. that she was overweight and plain every five minutes. It's a brutal business.
She tried Hollywood a couple of times but had trouble getting cast in things, Misery didn't happen until she was over 40. The studio didn't want her in Misery - Rob Reiner had to fight for her because he knew she was perfect for the role. The studio wanted Bette Midler, if you can believe it. Midler would've been awful and turned the movie into a campfest.
