Almodóvar’s English language film The Room Next Door wins Golden Lion
Previous Golden Lion winners which became major Oscar nominees and winners include Poor Things, Nomadland, Roma, Joker and The Shape of Water
This year’s Oscarbait was heavily impacted by the dual strikes and there are unlikely to be any major contenders which have yet to premiere with the exception of Timothée Chalamet’s A Complete Unknown. The other big awards contender from the Venice/Telluride/Toronto trifecta was The Brutalist, a 3 1/2 hour postwar epic about an architect and his patron which may get Oscars for Adrian Brody and Guy Pearce.

If Almodovàr wins the Oscar for Director, it would arguably be the first Oscar win from an openly gay director (George Cukor and John Schlesinger were both Oscar winners but they won in a different time.) as well as one whose gay identity has informed much of his work.

Good for Kidman. Sorry, this place seems to hate her but I think she's an exciting actress.

I know it’s easy to count her out given her “surprise win” and lack of subsequent nominations despite buzz, but I think Tilda will make it into Best Actress this year.

R2, I agree. I know a lot of gay men who love Kidman and Huppert. I was surprised to see they are both hated here.
Different generation, I guess.

I adore Almodovar. He's a genius. When I was living in Spain one of my Spanish friends told me that he was "our Woody Allen". This was before all the creepy shit.
