Jacob Elordi & Daisy Edgar-Jones play Queer Outsiders in 1950s America in “On Swift Horses”

“Two rising stars pair up for this sweeping, elegiac slice of ’50s Americana, centered on lonely characters and their painful, often sexy journeys toward self-acceptance.”

Another must-watch for us.

Please stop with the ridiculous retroactive application of "queer".

They need a new Oscar category: Best Queerbait

by Anonymousreply 2September 6, 2024 4:01 PM

I’m sorry this is such blatant Oscar queerbait.

by Anonymousreply 3September 6, 2024 4:03 PM

Queer tells me nothing about the characters. Are they trans? Nonbinary? Questioning? 2 Spirit? Pansexual? Or just plain gay & lesbian?

by Anonymousreply 4September 6, 2024 4:04 PM

R4 in the 50s? GAY AND LESBIAN OR BI. All those modern words don’t apply to then.

Jacob Elordi and Diego Calva play Julius and Henry, who strike up a romance and develop a steamy sexual chemistry that includes rich and emotional scenes.

Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones play “queer outsiders” Julius & Muriel in ‘ON SWIFT HORSES,’ who feel “a constant pull towards each other that leads to a stirring climax.”

Elordi: “I believe Taylor Swift calls it an invisible string.”

They're both terrible actors.

by Anonymousreply 8September 6, 2024 5:53 PM

Weak sauce.

by Anonymousreply 9September 6, 2024 8:10 PM

So they both aren’t attracted to each other but have some immediate and lasting pull towards one another. That sounds dumb.

It happens

by Anonymousreply 11September 6, 2024 11:28 PM

There was a couple on Oprah who met young, got married, had kids and then discovered they were both gay. Gay men and gay women have always found each other.

I am almost tearing up thinking about when I first met my lesbian best friend. More than 30 years ago, I was kinda closeted and very "straight-presenting" (no, seriously) and I still am in middle age. We were in graduate school, she walked right up to me and smiled broadly and said "what are you doing tomorrow?" The next evening she picked me up at my home. She didn't tell me where we were going and I didn't ask, we were just vibing. She took us straight to the gayest club in the city. She died about 12 years ago and I really miss her.

Remember, cisgender hetero girls like to see gay men kissing and caressing, and they can tolerate a tasteful, dimly-lit display of body contact...but NOT raw, sweaty butt sex and kink like in "Fellow Travelers." I hope they thread the needle carefully with this one.

by Anonymousreply 15September 7, 2024 5:51 PM

R15 SOME. Not all. Not all cisgender hetero girls like watching gay men.

R16 Yes, but who cares about them?

"Bones and All" minus the cannibalism.

Not that romantic movies about the disaffected and the wandering can't be good, but the genre had pretty much run its course when William Holden hopped that train.

by Anonymousreply 21September 7, 2024 10:50 PM

How is this like Bones and All? Let’s see this explanation

by Anonymousreply 22September 7, 2024 10:52 PM

Jacob and Barry reunited earlier to take some photos together. They are both at TIFF tonight because both their films are premiering there tonight. Earlier the casts of the films debuting tonight did their Variety photoshoots and interviews and they ran into each other.

Sydney Sweeney’s new movie premieres tonight too. I wonder if her and Jacob will run into each other.

Lots of young stars in these indie flicks this year.

by Anonymousreply 25September 7, 2024 11:12 PM

R25 why would there be more pics of them? The film focuses on Elordi and Edgar-Jones. Calva has a small supporting role.

by Anonymousreply 26September 7, 2024 11:14 PM

Elordi and Edgar-Jones are the leads. They get photographed together. Calva, Poulter, Calle are all small supporting roles. The focus is the two leads. Their relationships with others is secondary in the film.

Is Bones and All the first film about outsiders finding one another?

by Anonymousreply 30September 7, 2024 11:29 PM

This makes no sense to me??? A homosexual movie with a man and a woman? Neither likes the. " plumbing" of the other. Is this one of those movies from France of a lot of symbolism?

Deadline gives it a very mixed but mostly positive review. They sing the praises of Elordi and especially Calva.

“Edgar-Jones also seems to have a tough time getting a real handle on just who Muriel is, although certainly someone longing for a same-sex relationship while being newly married in the 1950s might not be the easiest character to define. Poulter is the poor lost soul in all this, and he could have been the antagonist standing between his brother and wife but he’s really a good old boy. You feel for him since he thought he was going to live the American dream. Elordi is becoming one of the most interesting actors around, especially after Saltburn and Euphoria have cemented his sex symbol bonafides. If they ever remake Hud, he’s the guy. However it is Calva, the discovery from Damian Chazelle’s Babylon, who is the standout, an intriguing character to be sure. And Calva hits all the right notes in and out of bed with Elordi.“

What a stupid post at r47

Gay men are so mentally lost they think everything is porn. Did they think a sex scene between two actors in an R rated film was gonna be porn? I’m confused. No real film fan yet alone someone who studied film thinks this.

by Anonymousreply 53September 9, 2024 7:27 AM

All these critics talking about how beautiful these actor are.. Sheesh, the hyperbole. Mutton dressed as lamb.

by Anonymousreply 54September 9, 2024 7:48 AM

I just got out of the theater and I enjoyed it overall. I liked the simplicity of it and that it was such a quiet movie. It was so quiet. It’s a slow movie and I don’t mind them when they don’t feel too long but this one eventually does start to feel long. This would have benefited from being trimmed down 20-30 minutes. It’s 2 hours and should have been 90 minutes.

I will say Jacob Elordi is LOVELY in this film and looks the most beautiful he’s ever looked.

by Anonymousreply 55April 25, 2025 7:43 PM

R57 he didn’t actually watch it. It was released today. You went to the first showing most likely. That poster has been posting all day. How would he have went to see it while posting on here the whole time?

by Anonymousreply 59April 25, 2025 9:40 PM

I've seen it twice, actually. The great thing about L.A is that there are advance screenings, aplenty.

Any scene with Elorid's Julius and Calva's Henry was my favorite, but specifically when Julius essentially tells Henry he doesn't need his old life, that he just wants him.

by Anonymousreply 67April 26, 2025 2:51 AM

It’s an okay movie. Daisy Edgar Jones probably gives the best performance in it, Also I never would’ve imagined I’d walk out of this movie with this cast feeling hottest for Will Poulter but the man has got a big ol dumptruck ass and I wanna smack it.

by Anonymousreply 68April 26, 2025 3:35 AM

Jacob gave a great performance. Everyone was good.

by Anonymousreply 70April 26, 2025 3:46 AM

by Anonymousreply 71April 26, 2025 3:48 AM

R70 only this isn’t about choosing to be closeted. It’s about having no choice. It was the 1950s. You comparing yourself in modern day to the 50s is laughable

by Anonymousreply 72April 26, 2025 3:54 AM

[quote]only this isn’t about choosing to be closeted. It’s about having no choice. It was the 1950s.

Muriel had a choice - that was the point of Sandra's anger towards Muriel at the end.

by Anonymousreply 73April 26, 2025 4:13 AM

The choice was to be out and live in a little bubble or not. You couldn’t be out back then. It wasn’t even legal.

by Anonymousreply 74April 26, 2025 4:17 AM

No fucking duh. It's still a choice to make - be alone yet true to yourself (as Sandra did) or stay in an unsatisfying relationship just because it's expected and the perceived norm.

by Anonymousreply 75April 26, 2025 4:28 AM

R75 and Muriel chose herself in the end. She didn’t stay in the marriage and didn’t stay with the hideous Mexican.
