Are Podcasters Tim Pool and Dave Rubin Actual Russian Assets?

U.S. says Russia funded media company that paid right-wing influencers millions for videos

[quote] Two Russian nationals working for a news network controlled by Vladimir Putin's government funneled millions of dollars to an American media company that paid right-wing influencers for videos pushing narratives favorable to the Kremlin, U.S. prosecutors alleged on Wednesday.

[quote] Federal prosecutors said RT (Russia Today) oversaw a series of "covert projects" that included funneling $10 million through a series of shell entities to a Tennessee-based company launched in 2023 that publishes videos on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube and X, formerly known as Twitter.

[quote] Though the company is not named in the indictment, prosecutors said that it describes itself as a "network of heterodox commentators that focus on Western political and cultural issues" and features six commentators as its "talent." Tenet Media describes itself using the same phrase on its website, and other details in the indictment align with the firm. Its website lists six right-wing personalities, including Dave Rubin, who has more than 2.4 million YouTube subscribers; Tim Pool, a podcast host with more than 1.3 million YouTube followers; and Benny Johnson, whose YouTube channel has nearly 2.4 million subscribers.

Tim Pool's response:

[quote] Pool wrote on social media, "Should these allegations prove true, I as well as the other personalities and commentators were deceived and are victims. I cannot speak for anyone else at the company as to what they do or to what they are instructed." He said his podcast was licensed by Tenet Media and existed before the license agreement. Pool also said he had full editorial control of the show and its contents, which he said are "often apolitical."

by Anonymousreply 1September 5, 2024 1:38 AM

People on Twitter are posting some of Tim Pool's hot takes on the Ukraine War that mirror Putin's view of the situation.

" "Should these allegations prove true, I as well as the other personalities and commentators were deceived and are victims"

Absolutely nobody will believe this bullshit claim, except perhaps his most die-hard supporters.

Tim Pool just announced that he is contemplating suing the Kamala Harris campaign for posting one of his videos that seems to indicate that he wants certain Democrats rounded up, imprisoned, or executed if Trump is elected. Maybe he believes it was edited or taken out of context? Not sure.

The Harris campaign's actual post:

[quote] Trump operatives [Tim Pool] say their Project 2025 plan is to give Trump total, unchecked legal power so they can jail and execute those who don’t support Trump if he wins. (They have since scrubbed this video from YouTube)

by Anonymousreply 23September 5, 2024 3:57 AM

I've been saying this since Trump was running in the 2016 primary - all of this shit was happening in the open since Gamergate a few years before that. The Russian and global right wing propaganda alliance.

Dave Rubin is a gay man living in Florida, married to another man and with two children conceived via surrogacy. Does he think his family is safe from Project 2025?

by Anonymousreply 31September 5, 2024 3:13 PM

I had no idea who any of these fools were until this indictment came out.

by Anonymousreply 32September 5, 2024 3:20 PM

R31, and when he announced he was having kids via surrogate, conservatives on the internet shrieked and said gay men shouldn't raise children

by Anonymousreply 33September 5, 2024 3:34 PM

I remember learning about Rubin after the uproar about him and his husband hiring a surrogate to have twins. Pool is new to me, but they appear to be two of the stupidest men on the planet. Someone has to be propping these morons up. They make Joe Rogan look like a Rhodes scholar in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 34September 5, 2024 3:43 PM

Let's go - time to research ALL the bank accounts from these right-wing online shitheads, including Cat turd. The fact that a leading right-wing voice is called Cat Turd tells you everything you need to know about these stupid people.

Just another reason they want to defund the IRS.

by Anonymousreply 35September 5, 2024 3:57 PM

by Anonymousreply 40September 5, 2024 4:20 PM

Dave Rubin is a failed comedian and wanna-be 'star'. When he couldn't hack it - he went conservative and all of a sudden found his $$$$.

Republican commentators and politicians are like the thirsty young actresses in Hollywood who will fuck ANYBODY to get a role, some fame and money. Their integrity, morality, and reputation is up for sale CHEAP.

I wish I could sell a part of my soul for gain, but I just am not made that way.

by Anonymousreply 41September 5, 2024 4:27 PM

There's a lot of money to be made in the right wing echo chamber. Just look at Trump and a lot of those hardcore MAGA congresspeople. There's always some merch, fundraising, linking to other RWNJs with their own online grifts. Hey, if you can find gullible idiots with a cult like mindset to fleece, why not? The sad thing is, they are more likely to spend their money on these scams than to buy health or dental insurance for their kids or elderly family members.

by Anonymousreply 42September 5, 2024 4:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 49September 5, 2024 5:13 PM

Hopefully all of them, R48.

by Anonymousreply 50September 5, 2024 5:14 PM

My guess is all the commentators investigated are affiliated with Tenet Media, and all are on the take one way or another. Not sure the ones r48 mentions are. But not sure. Is there a wider investigation beyond that particular company?

And of course, Putin could be funding all sorts of people through all sorts of fake companies.

by Anonymousreply 51September 5, 2024 5:18 PM

I want to see Trump, Musk and the rest of these asshole MAGA fucks rounded up and thrown in prison. So tired of this country putting up with their ongoing criminal bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 52September 5, 2024 5:27 PM

This is truly damning.

I remember casually watching Dave Rubin years and years ago. I was very into the Sam Harris/Chris Hitchens/Richard Dawkins intellectual scene in the late 00s, early 10s. Dave Rubin was an offshoot of that. (Or that's how I found him anyway.) But I quickly realized his idiocy was ocean sized and he did not belong in the same universe as Hitchens, let alone the same sentence.

So this does not surprise me at all.

by Anonymousreply 53September 5, 2024 5:29 PM

[quote] I wonder who the other, unnamed right wing personalities under investigation are. Jordan Peterson? Russell Brand? Steven Crowder?

I think Crowder is one of them. Maybe, Ben Shapiro or Candace Owens.

Yeah, Dave Rubin seems to be purely on the take. He started at The Young Turks as a leftist, but apparently wanted his own show with a huge paycheck. They turned him down, so he decided he was a libertarian instead and quickly realized the grifting is better on the Right, just cause you can always find rich wingnuts over there. And obviously, very interested foreign governments willing to shell out large amounts of money for even a semi-competent propagandist.

Pool seems more insane actually. Yeah, he loves the huge payoff, but shrieking that Ukraine is America's biggest enemy in the world is a level of "commitment" that seems at least partly driven by insanity.

by Anonymousreply 56September 5, 2024 5:36 PM

Fox News is already calling this "Russia Russia Russia" Part 2.

by Anonymousreply 57September 5, 2024 5:40 PM

[quote]I think Crowder is one of them. Maybe, Ben Shapiro or Candace Owens.

I doubt it’s Shapiro or Owens, because they’re too sane and sober to be Russian assets, IMO. On the other hand, Peterson, Brand and Crowder all have demons (histories of substance abuse, sexual misconduct, etc.) and are easier to control through financial coercion and blackmail. Crackhead Mike Lindell is probably on the list too.

by Anonymousreply 58September 5, 2024 5:41 PM

[quote] This is truly damning.

Do you think anything will be done about it though?

by Anonymousreply 59September 5, 2024 5:43 PM

Also, Peterson has direct Russian connections, and he’s intelligent enough to have earned a legit fanbase, so he’s a triple threat as a possible Russian asset.

by Anonymousreply 60September 5, 2024 5:45 PM

[quote] Yeah, Dave Rubin seems to be purely on the take. He started at The Young Turks as a leftist, but apparently wanted his own show with a huge paycheck. R61, I totally agree.

I think the far left and far right are two sides to the same damaged coin. Both are crazy radicals, black/white thinkers, who fall too easily for a cult of personality (the far right is more prone to this) and/or a cult of ideology (the far left is more prone to this).

Far right is worse. But not by much. Not these days.

Apparently, this Tim Pool idiot interviewed Laura Loomer and agreed with her that American traitors should be put to death. If that’s true, he should be on suicide watch.

by Anonymousreply 66September 5, 2024 7:35 PM

What exactly do you hate about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez r65?

This is why a lot of us are deeply suspicious of the "both sides" types, like you. What exactly is her terrible sin and why should she be stoned in the marketplace of ideas?

It seems like again and again the people on the hard right are all legitimately assholes with a terrible vision for the country based on their shitty personalities and beliefs. The people on the far left can absolutely be ridiculous and extremist and even violent, but it always seems to come from taking a reasonably good view, like fighting racism, and getting insane and becoming complete dicks about it.

by Anonymousreply 67September 5, 2024 7:35 PM

The "both sides" media types are particularly attractive for Russian propaganda as they more are more easily attuned to the "burn it all to the ground" messages that Russia likes to promote in the US for public destabalization

by Anonymousreply 68September 5, 2024 7:46 PM

Miss Greenwald is, of course, defending her Mother Russia:

[quote]"You're talking about a miniscule amount of money in the context of what is spent on our elections, let alone what the U.S. spends to influence the internal politics of other countries, including Russia."

[quote]The DOJ's indictment alleging Russian interference in the election claims Russian state media deployed about $10 million to secretly fund a U.S.-based content creation company. If the allegations are true, it is worth asking: how does $10 million compare to the billions of dollars spent within the U.S. on presidential campaigns?

"Project Good Old USA":

[quote]In late August 2023, Ilya Gambashidze was in a conference room at the office of Social Design Agency, a Russian IT company he founded that is based in Moscow, close to the world-renowned Moscow Conservatory. Gambashidze was relatively unknown in Russian politics at the time, but just a month earlier his name had appeared on a Council of the European Union’s list of Russian nationals subjected to sanctions for playing a central role in a sprawling disinformation campaign against Ukraine.

[quote]In the conference room, Gambashidze was laying out his plans for a new target: Along with his colleagues, he began drafting what would become known as the Good Old USA Project. The project was supposed to influence the outcome of the US presidential election in favor of former president Donald Trump, specifically targeting certain minorities, swing-state residents, and online gamers, among others, in a scheme that included a full-time team dedicated to the cause.

[quote]On Wednesday, Gambashidze and his company were named by the US Department of Justice among the architects of a disinformation campaign known as Doppelganger that has for the past two years been targeting Ukraine and, more recently, US elections. The Doppelganger campaign uses AI-generated content on dozens of fake websites designed to impersonate mainstream media outlets such as The Washington Post and Fox Business, using a network of fake social media accounts to disseminate pro-Russian narratives targeting audiences across the globe. Doppelganger is a Kremlin-aligned disinformation campaign that was first linked to the Kremlin in 2023 by the French government.

What’s Pool spending all his rubles on? He should have at least gotten some hair plugs. He’s too young to be bald, and too old to wear that beanie. The beanie makes him look like a chomo.

by Anonymousreply 110September 6, 2024 1:45 AM

All of the short-selling Wall Street banks, brokers, traders et. al. thank Tim profusely for buying at the top.

R120, the worry isn't that Tim Pool is some huge fish. He's not. But he's not unknown either.

The worry is how many other Tim Pool's are on Russia' payroll? Slowly chipping away at people's belief in our system?

Also, you might not have heard of him, but I have. And so have hundreds of thousands of other people.

You might also have never heard of Dave Rubin. But I have. And so have hundreds of other people.

And many look to these morons for political guidance. Now we know that "guidance" isn't anything more that Russian propaganda, bought and paid for by Moscow.

by Anonymousreply 125September 6, 2024 3:02 AM

It’s telling that so many (most?) of the prominent figures on the “new right” landscape are failed screenwriters, comedians and actors - and that they tend to be either breathtakingly stupid - like Dave Rubin, Tim Pool and Benny Johnson - or have fairly obvious personality disorders - like Candace Owens, Stephen Crowder and Rod Dreher.

by Anonymousreply 136September 6, 2024 4:05 AM

Why is the DOJ so focused on Russia money and Russian propaganda? Russia isn’t the only foreign country spreading propaganda in the U.S.

Qatar owns A Jazeera. AJ+ is constantly spreading far-left propaganda to cause political division. Qatar is responsible for all these campus “Free Palestine” protests.

I don’t care whether propaganda is from Russia or not. I care whether it is true and whether it has merit.

by Anonymousreply 137September 6, 2024 5:02 AM

R126 - remember Reagan? Yeah - b-list and failed entertainers have always gravitated to the Republican party.

R137- because it's part of Russian interference in our elections? Are you dumb?

by Anonymousreply 138September 6, 2024 5:11 AM

[quote]r137 = I care whether it is true and whether it has merit.

It's not and it doesn't. Are you retarded? You're retarded, aren't you?

by Anonymousreply 139September 6, 2024 5:13 AM

Marsha Blackburn aka Senator JBF Hair does seem dumb enough to take the Russian rubles and not ask questions.

by Anonymousreply 140September 6, 2024 5:34 AM

Part of what Russia does is financially back and platform people who are already on their "side". Or near enough to it. They don't necessarily tell the "influencer" what to say. Though they might do that too. But they give the influencer a bigger microphone.

Tim Pool got paid 100k an episode to sound the lunatic he already was. But amped up.

And with a bigger platform? That means more followers. More followers means more acolytes. More acolytes means more incels thinking they have a "voice". They then use that voice, telling their idiot online friends about how cool Tim Pool is and to fuck Ukraine, fuck the West, fuck democracy.

One of those friends tells your weird cousin this exact thing in some Reddit thread. And pretty soon your weird cousin, who was always strange but generally harmless, is now ranting and raving about how Putin is misunderstood, fuck Biden, fuck Harris, all while proclaiming Trump is the only true leader.

Rinse and repeat.

by Anonymousreply 141September 6, 2024 5:44 AM

I like what Kim Iversen has to say. If you’re going to go after influencers for secretly taking money from Russia, you should be going after anybody secretly taking money from Israel or Qatar.

But, if what the indictment says about Lauren Chen is true, what she did was very wrong. Influencers are constantly being accused of being paid Russian asssets. So when it turns out that that’s the case with Lauren Chen, that makes everyone else look suspicious, even if they’re innocent.

by Anonymousreply 145September 6, 2024 5:56 AM

R134: I always wondered why Rod Dreher merited THREE extensive profiles in The New Yorker over a period of several years.

I know a Dutch journalist who interviewed him in Budapest for a current-affairs weekly. My acquaintance said that when Dreher first relocated to Budapest, he would occasionally move his "office" to one of the local "Scruton Cafés" (named after the conservative British philosopher). He said it was ironic that people in those cafés like to rant against globalization and take pride in Budapest being "like the rest of Europe was a century ago" while the background music, oat milk chai lattes, pulled pork sandwiches, ambience, furnishings, and magazines on display are as generic and "globalized" as can be,

by Anonymousreply 147September 6, 2024 9:38 AM

[quote]Dreher moved his family to Hungary to continue spewing this stuff.

No, Dreher abandoned his family and moved to Hungary. His eldest son, the only of his three children who are still talking to him, later moved to Hungary to be with him.

Dreher, who has long said the family is sacrosanct -- he's much like his buddy JD Vance in that regard -- is divorced and estranged from his ex-wife and their two youngest children.

Why would anyone listen to a moronic high school dropout's political opinions in the first place? How did he become popular?

by Anonymousreply 158September 6, 2024 1:21 PM

R158 He's basically if a channel like TheQuartering got more heavily into politics. There is a massive audience of young men who only want to watch videos about how video games and sci fi movies are being destroyed by gay people and feminists. He's a gamergate guy through and through. These channels are huge - there are so fucking many of them and they are all making TONs of money with hundreds of thousands or million plus subscribers. TheQuartering has 1.7M subscribers for example and is a morbidly obese retard who says the same thing every day. Actually, looking at TheQuarterpounder's channel now it's more explicitly political than usual - but for years this was all about how video games and comic books and your favorite nerdy hobby is under attack. He's a guy who became an anti-woke youtuber after getting banned from Magic The Gathering tournaments for harassing people and creeping out women.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 159September 6, 2024 1:37 PM

YouTube subscriber numbers aren't audited and can easily be manipulated so no reason to believe that many people are actually watching these videos.

TheQuartering was just defending Pool, so he should be lawyering up now as it's likely he's next on the investigation list

by Anonymousreply 160September 6, 2024 2:07 PM

R160 it’s pretty big - if you’re familiar with that online space at all the anti-woke hysteria has basically been the only thing nerds have talked about for almost ten years now. Every possible channel, content platform, message board, chat room, etc.
