To the central Californian DL'ers, have you ever been?
Is it fun, or too frau-y?
I miss the Christkindlmarkt in Chicago and this is now the closest one, so wondering if it's worth a trip.

The only thing close to Cambria is an ocean bluff, a highway that has frequent closures and a castle built by a lady architect for a nutty newspaperman with mommy issues.

Other than that, it is a charming place to stop by for a day and enjoy some decent food.
cf. Carmel by the Sea; Solvang and others

R1 We'd probably stay in SLO and drive up for the Market. Just wondering if anyone has been to the market itself.

R2 love Solvang, will definitely make a stop there.

Take a piss at the Madonna Inn—that’s always a fun time in SLO

Why the Madonna Inn?

I’ve been to the Cambria market, and live in SLO. It’s charming, but I would make it part of a greater Solvang/Santa Ynez Valley - Cambria - Carmel trip. If you’re able to drive up Highway 1 you might see reindeer past the Hearst Castle property.

In Cambria all things breathe freedom and peace and you can forget the world and its sad toils.

R7 am jealous of you! Have really fallen in love with SLO but doubt we could quite swing a home there. Looks like even a 1200 sqf cottage would be well over a mil.

If you are in the area, it’s worth a stop. Like Cambria, itself, it’s a melange: MAGATs, what we used to call “new age” types, and crafty frauen transplants from the heartland. Think macrame with lots of Christmas lights and rosy-cheeked children. My advice if you find yourself on the Central Coast: go to Linn’s and order the lobster club sandwich with a slice of ollalieberry pie.

The Christmas market is frau-y but frau-y in a Celtic earth mother way, I'd say. These are the kind of women who nurse each others babies, let their underarm hair grow to braidable lengths and make their own maxi pads with gauze and gaffer tape. I had to pop a Xanax to deal with it all, the constant chatter about nipple chafings and weird discharges. No one wore deodorant so they all smelled like country fried ham left out in the sun. I might have had a churro.

If you are going to overnight in Cambria, consider the White Water. V cute.

I enjoy visiting Cambria and nearby environs but have never been to the Christmas Market. It just may be time for another visit this December!
One thing puzzles me and that's the correct pronunciation of Cambria. Is it Came-bria or Cam-bria? Long or short A? I've asked locals and get both answers. Anyone know for sure?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 6, 2024 4:37 PM |
Cam-bria...as in camshaft.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 6, 2024 4:42 PM |
I watched a few YouTube reports and it was Cam-bri-a, like cam show, brie cheese, and uh.
Like Cambria County in Pennsylvania. Except people actually want to be in Cambria, CA.

Stay in Cambria itself.

Was anyone talking about Wales? No.

What do big, giant sea creatures have to do with some podunk town in CA?

Yes indeed, we too use "cookies." Take a look at our privacy/terms or if you just want to see the damn site without all this bureaucratic nonsense, click ACCEPT. Otherwise, you'll just have to find some other site for your pointless bitchery needs.
