German elections: far-right AfD on brink of political earthquake

The far right is on the cusp of winning the most votes in German state elections for the first time since the Nazis.

For some in Germany, the rise of Alternative for Germany (AfD) is a literal nightmare.

But others, particularly in the east, say the AfD is a chance for change.

All year, the temperature has been rising in German politics and Sunday’s vote in Thuringia and Saxony may be the boiling point.

“Liar!” shouted a small group of people in Thuringia this week, as Chancellor Olaf Scholz took the stage in the city of Jena.

Chants of “Volksverräter” also punctured through the wider applause; a phrase that means “traitor of the people” and is seen by many as having Nazi connotations.

Chancellor Scholz’s Social Democratic Party, along with his Green and Liberal coalition partners, are doing so badly in Thuringia they may not even get a single seat in the state parliament – while the AfD is polling top.

In neighbouring Saxony, the AfD is running neck and neck with the conservative CDU.

Last week’s knife attack, in which a Syrian asylum seeker and suspected Islamist is accused of killing three people, has fuelled fierce criticism of how successive governments have handled migration.

A hasty – you could even say panicked – response has seen ministers announce tougher asylum and knife crime laws.

If they didn't import so many Muslims, this wouldn't be happening.

It is 100% Muslim immigration.

If your country lets 8 out of 9 gang rapists go with no prison but a woman who calls them disgusting pigs spends the weekend in jail you have serious problems.

by Anonymousreply 2September 1, 2024 7:00 PM

Their export-oriented economy has slowed down substantially recently, as many of us have been predicting it would for decades at this point, and it's happened smack dab in the middle of a centre-left government's tenure. So naturally the people are spooked because their inherently faulty economic policy isn't shitting out magic anymore, and are now looking at alternatives. Still, I'm surprised just how little it took for them to embrace the Nazis again. Guess I was wrong about the Germans having learned their lesson.

Of course, the usual suspects on DL will just blame this on immigration. Just as they had in the run-up to Brexit.

by Anonymousreply 3September 1, 2024 7:01 PM

Posted before seeing the first two comments. Case in point beautifully made for me by two economic analphabets.

by Anonymousreply 5September 1, 2024 7:03 PM

What a rancid comment r4. Do you think it's fine and dandy for a country to let rapists go with no punishment except for the woman who accurately calls them pigs?

by Anonymousreply 6September 1, 2024 7:07 PM

[quote]Of course, the usual suspects on DL will just blame this on immigration.

It is absolutely immigration from Muslim countries.

No Doll, it's the Germans blaming this on immigration.

Thuringia and Saxony have never really been part of the successful German economic system. Beautiful as they are, and rich in history, they have nevertheless remained poverty-stricken since reunification, with a dwindling population as young people head for better prospects in the West German states. This has been the case for more than 3 decades, and it is only now that the people are turning to the far right. Why now? What has changed?

[quote] Of course, the usual suspects on DL will just blame this on immigration. Just as they had in the run-up to Brexit.

This is 100% due to immigration. Angela Merkel made a unilateral decision to change the demographics of the German state without consulting the electorate and without even paying much heed to parliamentarians (including her coalition partners) and thereby destroyed the faith which millions of people had in the Bundestag and in the mainstream parties.

If mainstream parties ignore the most fundamental concerns of the electorate, who will the electorate turn to?

It’s Germany—there’s always some “outsider” group that’s FORCNG them to turn to fascism.

by Anonymousreply 11September 2, 2024 9:35 PM

I've spent some time in Saxony (Dresden) and, as beautiful as it was, I was shocked at some of the things people would blurt out. The issue is that, like most countries behind the Iron Curtain, DDR never had the same reckoning with the events of its recent past (as West Germany did) once the Soviet troops marched in there in 1948. That mindset is still there, not on the surface, but it can manifest itself in subtle ways. And the reunification, in its triumphalism and the naive belief that the switch to Western capitalism will make those things go away, never attempted to rectify that. It's a common problem in a lot of former communist Eastern European countries: anti-communist sentiments aligned themselves with what was there before the Russians arrived: collaboration with nazis in WW2, anti-semitism, virulent nationalism, etc.

by Anonymousreply 12September 2, 2024 9:46 PM

If only the German state could reach some kind of final solution to deal with all those dirty Mooslims, am I right R9?

by Anonymousreply 13September 2, 2024 9:57 PM

Spain will be next with Vox and it is 100% Muslim and African inmigration the reason why it going to be like this. The left just doesn’t learn, it is like if they are totally disconnected from the people and living in their own invented realm.sadly, gays will pay the price. The left just don’t understand and are not adapting to the new era of information in which right wing media reign supreme on YouTube, X, TikTok, pretty much all social media is pure right wing information/ misinformation and propaganda. I have never seen so much anti immigration channels on YouTube from Spain, as I see it now, and they are all pro Vox and many are actually from gay YouTubers. As an Spanish citizen I want to know how bad Vox could be for gays, as I don’t live in Spain, I do know that it is a Conservative Party and I have heard and read from the knews that it is anti gay. However, that is not what my gay Cubans friends who live in Spain tell me about Vox, and from the comments on Youtube, many gays seem to lime Vox. They say that Vox is not anti gay. My friends in Italy say the same thing about Meloni. But what is the left doing to anger Spaniards so much? Well they are doing pretty much nothing to stop Islamic and African inmigration, and instead they are opening up centers all over Spain to distribute them at the expense of the tax payers. The president of Spain just recently went a few days ago to Mauritania to offer more than 200 000 jobs in Spain to these people thus incentivizing immigration.

What is going on with the Left???? Aren’t they seeing what is coming up?

And is not all immigration, as there are a huge number of Latinos in Spain, it is specifically Islamic and African immigrants what Spaniards do not want.

Right wing media are blaming women, feminism, woke and gays for voting for these pro Islamic parties all over Europe making it seem like gays are Marxists and communists.

Kamala will win this election and American gays will be better than ever but gays in Europe in the next 20 years will see a very ugly picture.

by Anonymousreply 14September 2, 2024 10:10 PM

[quote] It’s Germany—there’s always some “outsider” group that’s FORCNG them to turn to fascism.

No, clearly there isn't. This is obviously something new, and something is making this happen now. What do you imagine it is r11 if not Muslim immigration and the belief that those immigrants represent some kind of threat? Or is your answer some version of "sudden eruption of anger and bigotry for no particular reason" and if you yell at everyone enough to just stop all the bigotry, it will all simmer down.

On the other hand, the immigration itself and pro-immigrant policies aren't coming out of nowhere or because evil malevolent politicians just feel like bringing a bunch of foreigners in, just to piss off the locals. Isn't there a demographic crunch? Somebody's got to do the shit work at the shit wages, and there just aren't enough locals to do that?

by Anonymousreply 15September 2, 2024 10:24 PM

Turks were brought into Germany in the 70's because of a labor shortage.

The neonazis/AfD should reveal their special plan to counter the massive employment issues that would result from kicking all the immigrants out.

by Anonymousreply 16September 2, 2024 10:30 PM

Any real political enthusiast should have seen this in 2016 when the Syrian crisis sparked a new wave of reactionary movements across the west. Doubling down on a suicidal immigration policy and refusing to accept that Islam isn't compatible with liberal values brought Germany this corrupt clown party.

by Anonymousreply 17September 2, 2024 10:33 PM

I lived in Berlin for most of the 2000s and there was always a visible far-right presence. Similar to R12, I was often shocked by the overt racism, even from friends who seemed otherwise liberal. This is unsurprising to me - the eastern parts of the country have always been known to be a neo-Nazi stronghold.

by Anonymousreply 18September 2, 2024 10:34 PM

R15, the article itself explains that the rise of the far right actually has many causes. A lot of it seems to be due to the East German-ness of this whole area. Voters are upset with Germany’s support for Ukraine and have a huge chip on their shoulder about being looked down upon by other Germans.

Thank you for the bizarro world look at life as you support the literal opposite in Gaza, Matt. You cheerlead for the murder of tens of thousands of people who are Muslim and who YOU want dead, because they happen to be living on land you want.

The Zionists are today’s Nazis. But then you give us your doubletalk upside-down reality explanation, your gaslighting.

by Anonymousreply 32September 3, 2024 12:35 AM

Wrong r32. Muslims are completely intolerant of liberal/Western values, hence the chaos in every Western country and refusal to assimilate.

BTW this Matt person hasn't posted on DL in at least a decade, as well as the Davida person you nuts are also obsessed with. Who even knows if they're still alive.

by Anonymousreply 33September 3, 2024 12:42 AM

Listen to you, Matt — what would you say if I told you Jews have to assimilate or die?

The vast majority of Muslims that live in western countries are good citizens and live in harmony with their neighbors. Neo-fascists are no different than the Nazis vilifying Jews as a way to take power, and their Zionist allies do it to make their mass murder and ethnic cleansing of Muslims more palatable in the west.

by Anonymousreply 34September 3, 2024 12:56 AM

[quote] The president of Spain just recently went a few days ago to Mauritania to offer more than 200 000 jobs in Spain to these people thus incentivizing immigration.

Nice try R14 but Spain doesn’t have a president.

by Anonymousreply 35September 3, 2024 12:56 AM

Again, for the cheap seats — fascists use fear of the other to take power. In Europe the other is Muslims and in the USA the other is immigrants, blacks and democrats.

That didn’t make it true. If you claim the neo-fascists are right that makes you a neo-fascist yourself.

by Anonymousreply 36September 3, 2024 12:59 AM

r34 keep fucking that chicken.

This is a very real problem with Muslims in the West and it's only going to get much worse. They have their own region of the world. They don't need to infest the rest of the world with their Medieval bullshit.

[quote]R8: No Doll, it's the Germans blaming this on immigration.

So they vote accordingly. But fear of immigrants is being posted and amplified on their social media by the usual suspects, and that includes Russian troll brigades.

Ever noticed how anonymous far right trollsocks constantly post negative stories here on the DL about sexual, ethnic, and religious minorities, trying to convey the general impression that they're deviants, criminals, and all-around undesirables, that they represent a constant, clear and present danger to everyone else? And how there's certain media outlets (NYP, Fox, etc) which lend themselves as resources to these kinds of claims. upon which they rely? There's a general recognition that, statistically speaking, these cherry-picked incidents are not prevalent, but media amplification offers the false impression that they are. These kinds of social media troll influencer games are played on a much more intensive, grander scale across the US, the UK, Europe, and Germany specifically, and that's how a situation like the AfD sweeping their polls obtains.

R14: I'm surprised that your friends in Italy would deny that the Meloni government is anti-gay. Its homophobic policies have been criticized by human-rights organizations and activists.

[quote]Gay rights activists on Tuesday denounced as homophobic moves by Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni’s far-right-led government to limit recognition of parental rights to the biological parent only in the case of same-sex parents.

[quote]The city of Milan has been told to stop officially recording both parents in same-sex couples on city registers. It had been the last major city in Italy to be doing so. Earlier, a smattering of administrations had briefly embraced the practice of recognizing both parents regardless of sexual orientation, but they all stopped following instructions from the central government.

[quote]The piece of bureaucracy is key to recognizing parental rights for a range of everyday situations like authorizing medical treatment or participation in class outings. The president of Rainbow Families, Alessia Crocini, said the move exposed the Meloni government’s homophobia.

[quote]“This government is the maximum expression of homophobia,’’ she said. “Meloni says that for a child to grow up well, they need a mother and father, even if decades of research say otherwise. It is insulting to hundreds of thousands of families with two same-sex parents.”

EXACTLY r46 and r47. But Russia doesn’t even need to be involved here, tbqf. Neo-fascism has been lurking in Europe like a cancer in remission for decades. Memories of, well, YOU KNOW, have kept it on the fringes.

The recent Muslim immigration wave into Europe gave them what they needed to step forward. The Muslims are their “Juden.” Now they have a scapegoat to fill people with anger and hatred. So, like our racist troll Defacto does here with blacks, they relentlessly exploit every crime or incident of culture clash to distort the perception of Muslims.

Most African Americans are good citizens and productive, law abiding Americans but you wouldn’t know that if all you read was the drumbeat of negative stories our Pittsburgh troll posts here. It’s no different with the Muslims and the neo-fascists in Europe.

The saddest thing about this is how rightwing gays support neo-fascism here and on other social media outlets. Just wait until neo-fascism prevails. Wait until you see what they have in store for us. As far as they’re concerned, we’re in the same basket as immigrants, Muslims and blacks and will be similarly dealt with.

And we're talking about the modern world. Just look around Europe. How any gay person can condone Islam is mind boggling.

I've said this before but if Muslims were lily white Anglo Saxons, Western liberals would have no problem whatsoever telling them to go fuck themselves, as they do with Evangelical Christians every day.

How Islam became the pet of the Left is truly a story unto itself. They are not your friends and never will be.

by Anonymousreply 58September 3, 2024 2:50 AM

“You are spreading fascist propaganda. The fascists are the real threat to European civilization, not the immigrants.”

This is exactly what the Left is saying, not only that according to a lefty politician in the Spanish parliament, the ones assaulting and stealing are not the immigrants but Amazon, google, Walmart, etc all the companies in Spain. This was part of her actual discourse on the parliament.

The pro Muslim immigration want you to think that the people voting for these right wing parties are all fascists however they are in reality normal working people, and many of them even voted for left parties in the pasts.

Any one that says that Muslims are not a real a source of violence and crime clearly ignores the daily assaults with knives perpetrated by these Muslims in countries were this kind of acts were not common.

In countries such as Spain, they are even more emboldened and open acknowledging that they want to destroy western civilization and that they will get back Andalucía, the region known as Al Andalus that they conquered and stole from the Visigoths. They are all over social media openly and brazenly declaring their objectives and plans for Europe abd yet the Left want people to take it slightly, like no worries they will integrate,

The funny thing that many of these white Americans that call Europeans who oppose Muslims inmigration fascists, wouldn’t even live in a mostly Hispanic or black neighborhood in the US, let alone in a Muslim one.

I said no such thing. I said Islam has been at war with the West for 1500 years. Perhaps I should have clarified by "war" I mean a clash of civilizations and they have always hated Europe. They have a mandate to make the world a Caliphate. Islam is always hostile to other cultures.

[quote]Actually if they were white, and show all the stereotypes you claim they do, then rightwingers would love them, as they do evangelical Christians every day.

I said the Left would hate them and tell them to go fuck themselves. You're correct that the Right would probably love them if they were white. Since they are as intolerant and hostile as Evangelical Christians are to liberal and classically Western values.

You and Defacto use every bad act by a Muslim person (or a black person) to argue that every member of that group is evil and must be destroyed or rejected. I have indicated that you’re a liar, because I am many like me know Muslims who are good, decent people. You really don’t understand that? You seem not to, based on your absurd reply about your aunt having a dick. Muslims being decent people isn’t like your aunt having a dick, retard. Don’t you know any Muslims? Are you a shut in?

by Anonymousreply 77September 3, 2024 2:23 PM

The solution to this is really simple. The Left just needs to get over this absurd love for lax immigration policy. While they aren't thinking about it in the most enlightened terms, it's not racist for the poor, working class to be upset about migrants and illegal immigrants flowing across the borders and shit like that. The far right would not be so attractive to people across Europe right now if the Left would just givee up that one issue. Certainly that's worth it to them to avoid a far right future.

by Anonymousreply 78September 3, 2024 2:27 PM

by Anonymousreply 80September 3, 2024 2:45 PM

It's not just about Muslims people. Read this document produced by the AfD if you dare, it's as long as a Hitler speech and immigration is a but one issue amid the right-wing make Germany strong again boilerplate. How gays can be defending these fascists beggars belief.

How will gays fare in this sovereign, heavily militarized Germany? Why, the word homosexual isn't written once, although I might have missed it. What we have is the policy of support for traditional families and prohibiting criticism of traditional gender separation of duties. Mothers are exalted and should be 'encouraged' to stay home. Abortion will be criminalized although it's put in slightly softer language. The relentless imperative to produce more German babies is truly a blast from the past. Needless to say, gender studies will not be allowed in new Germany.

Most of the sections are standard boilerplate nationalism, calls for an end to corruption, anti-EU Grexit threats, pro private enterprise, direct Democracy, while government interference in social areas is strong. Compulsory military service and no restrictions on gun ownership.

Most of this is the same old noxious propaganda that was stinking up the world long before the Muslims could be scapegoated without sounding insane.

[quote]The funny thing that many of these white Americans that call Europeans who oppose Muslims inmigration fascists, wouldn’t even live in a mostly Hispanic or black neighborhood in the US, let alone in a Muslim one.

Muslim immigrants in the United States are, by and large, much better educated, more motivated, and more ambitious than many of the Muslims who immigrated to Europe. They also tend to be better assimilated. The former group generally had to jump though a lot of hoops to get there (and also have more resources), as the U.S. has much stricter immigration requirements, while many of the latter are there because their fathers or grandfathers were brought in as guest workers. A huge number of Turkish immigrants (and their forebears) in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, for example, are originally from the Anatolia region (full of notorious pussy hounds/big Erdogan supporters), which is considered by Turks to be one of the most backward parts of the country.

To the poster(s) who keep(s) seeing "Matt" everywhere: he has a *very* distinctive writing style (grim, obsessive, humorless, repetitions), and it is not in this thread.

I'm not fear mongering you crypto fascist Maga shitbag. Go live in Germany if you think it's going to be so progressive with traditional families the only government approved arrangement, gender separation of duties, mandatory military service, the inevitable second class citizenship of gays and women- the homophobic jokes of the scumbag rightwing leaders. You're such a racist moron you don't even care that immigration can be restricted without dragging a country back to the bad old days. If you're actually gay I would seriously LOVE you to join the party. I heard they had two gay members in 2015 but one got disillusioned and left. It seemed the homophobia was a little much, in spite of their more progressive policies. Fuck YOU.

by Anonymousreply 92September 4, 2024 1:19 AM

6.2 Larger Families instead of Mass Immigration 40

6.3 Increase Support for Families 41

6.4 Effect of the Demographic Crisis on the Economic Outlook 41

6.5 End Discrimination of Full-Time Mothers 42

6.6 Support Single Parents, Boost Families

Mandatory military service was party of Germany until 2011. Males were required to serve. It was a good program that taught responsibility, various skills and a sense of personal achievement. Latvia, Lithuania and Sweden still do it.

by Anonymousreply 102September 4, 2024 3:38 AM

Historian Timothy Snyder (an expert on Eastern and Central Europe and WW2) has described very well (including in his book "On Tyranny") how authoritarian, antidemocratic parties gain power. He explains that, while in the 20th century dictators used military might to seize power, in our century the battle is fought at the mental and cognitive level. You can see the blueprint for that in Hungary and Russia: it begins with an election victory, after which autocrats gradually attempt to shift what is considered "normal." It's a process in which your vote counts a little less each time. Poland managed to turn things around in the last election, but the United States, for example, is one election away from a meaningless next election. A country like the Netherlands might have another two or three elections to turn the tide.

AfD is farther to the right than Spain's Vox, the Sweden Democrats, and Wilders's PVV party in the Netherlands.

Read "How Fascism Works" by Jason Stanley (which looks at Hungary, Poland, Myanmar, and the U.S.), "How Democracies Die" by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt, or Maria Ressa's "How to Stand Up to a Dictator."

by Anonymousreply 122September 5, 2024 4:39 AM

In France, Rassemblement National's Jordan Bardella has been hugely successful with young people on TikTok with his clean-cut looks and telegenic manner. Yet his party, which also has broad appeal among the working classes, voted *against* raising the minimum wage in the Assemblée Nationale, *against* indexation of wages and pensions, and their promise to abolish VAT (sales tax) on basic necessities has been shelved, as has their proposal to reverse Macron's raising of the state retirement age to 64.

I do believe angry voters in Europe should be approached with empathy and taken seriously without condoning or glossing over their perceived racist or radical-right views, but some of the more right-leaning DL posters appear to willfully ignore or downplay the genuinely illiberal policies of the parties they seem to champion, easily dismissing this as "all bark and no bite." I think there's too little awareness of the tools the likes of Viktor Orbán and Giorgia Meloni have at their disposal to undermine democracy within a relatively short space of time. Look at Fratelli Italia's (Meloni's party) recent initiatives to restrict the freedom of the press at national TV channel RAI:

Meloni is by far the most popular leader of a major European country.

Her approval rating is 57%. Compare that to Biden's.

And polling shows her party more popular than the others. And growing.

Exactly, r81. We have on this forum Zionist gays who are so fanatically one-issue that they will race to support anything that paints Muslims in a bad light, knowing that will make their appalling behavior in Palestine less unpalatable to relatively-unaware Americans.

But by supporting the claims made by AfD and other neo-fash movements, they are, perhaps quite literally, digging their own graves. Our homegrown fascist, Donald Trump, backs Project 2025, and we all know how that addresses same sex marriage. Do we honestly think it’ll stop there? That’s just the foot in the door. Equal rights and anti-discrimination will be next.

And after that? Once representative government is de facto suppressed and the rightwing state grows, do we really think it’ll be safe to be LGBTQ+? To have liberal/progressive beliefs?

by Anonymousreply 128September 5, 2024 5:42 PM

Look at it this way? Would r140 look at an attack by the French resistance on the Germans as an “appalling tragedy?” Justifying the murder of entire French villages in “retaliation?”

And I’d argue what happened, and is still happening, to the Palestinians is much worse than what happened to the French 1940-44.
