Not again: Young Marine goes missing after leaving a bar alone in the wee hours

And, yes, there's a body of water nearby, a very large one.

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KABC) -- A desperate search is underway for a missing 23-year-old Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Lance Cpl. Bailey Cameron was initially reported missing on Aug. 25. His mother told KGTV he was at a bar in Carlsbad on the night of his disappearance.

Surveillance video shows Cameron, who was wearing a black T-shirt and jeans, leaving the bar alone after 1:30 a.m. His mother says a few of his belongings were found just a block away the following day.

Police and military officials are involved in the search, and the NCIS has also been notified about his disappearance.

Loved ones are asking anyone with information to speak out and help bring Cameron home.

His belongings were found next to a restaurant that is on the beach. He’s in the water.

by Anonymousreply 1September 1, 2024 4:50 PM

He bailed.

by Anonymousreply 2September 1, 2024 4:52 PM

His belongings were in a back pack. Isn't it strange to go out to the bars carrying a backpack? The family believes he was spotted inside a business.

[QUOTE]Cameron says they believe Bailey was spotted at a business in the area wearing the same clothes he had worn when he disappeared.

[QUOTE]“We have a photo of him after he went missing, but there’s been no contact, there’s been no communication with buddies or family,” explained Cameron. “We don’t know if he’s under duress. We don’t know if he’s 100% or not.”

[QUOTE]That photo of Bailey Cameron inside a business has been circulating online with the family's permission. However, Cameron wants to reiterate that his son is still missing as he has not made contact with any family or friends.

Carlsbad is a fairly wealthy area so I don't think anything bad happened to him. I think I know that restaurant - it's above the cliff going down to the beach. There aren't any beach-level restaurants.

Went for a swim or suicide. I'm thinking the latter.

Suicide is not uncommon in the military. If he left his dog tag and his clothes in a pile - it was suicide.

by Anonymousreply 4September 1, 2024 4:58 PM

Abducted by illegal alirns? Thank you for your service Bailey!!!

by Anonymousreply 5September 1, 2024 5:00 PM

That's some serious gay face. Let's hope he's with some guy and is getting his hole blown out and lost track of time.

by Anonymousreply 6September 1, 2024 5:04 PM

They need to check the basements of all Dataloungers in a 50-mile radius.

by Anonymousreply 7September 1, 2024 5:20 PM

R7 - no basements in California - earthquake code.

by Anonymousreply 8September 1, 2024 5:30 PM

That's not true, r8. Basements are fine as long as they're designed and built to withstand earthquake motion.

by Anonymousreply 9September 1, 2024 5:38 PM

There are also grandfathered basements from before the new codes came into effect in the '70s. I have one in my 1949 house.

It's likely prohibitively expensive for most prople. Here's a recent thread about ultra-rich Southern Californians building "iceberg" mansions with expansive basements.

[quote] Carlsbad is a fairly wealthy area so I don't think anything bad happened to him.

Camp Pendleton, in Oceanside, near Carlsbad, is where the Marine base is. It's been a long time since I was in Oceanside, but it had some seedy areas. (Typical seedy stuff that crops up close to military bases.)

by Anonymousreply 21September 1, 2024 6:49 PM

Is it strange that there's no information in the articles about how he got to Coyote Grill, whether he was seen with anyone during the evening, what his emotional state was, or if he was intoxicated? People saw him, the police and NCIS have likely questioned waitstaff and other possible witnesses. Why withhold info if this is a run-of-the-mill drunk guy story?

by Anonymousreply 22September 1, 2024 6:51 PM

R21 Yea it’s not like that today., no seediness The base in San Diego is though. Carlsbad is a fairly big; it’s not all wealth. A lot of just regular middle class but there are concentrations of wealth still. People associate north San Diego county with wealth. I wonder if that’s why that person is saying that. It’s surrounded by super wealthy towns. But Carlsbad itself is not all wealth.

by Anonymousreply 28September 2, 2024 6:46 AM

Maybe he went to shoot a video for Rob Navarro at Military Classified.

by Anonymousreply 29September 2, 2024 6:54 AM

In the video of him leaving the bar, maybe he is carrying his backpack (the one his mother noted was found with some of his belongings) in front of him, but it's unclear. (In OPś link, the still b/w photo that follows the video of him leaving the bar shows him, again viewed from behind, with his arms in the exact same position -- timestamps show the two photos having been made inside the bar seconds apart.)

It doesn't seem a good sign that he would carry the backpack with some care only for it to have been found one-block away the next day. That he didn't put it on his back and that the two video grabs from the bar are from seconds apart makes me wonder if he was there just briefly looking for someone -- and may have been carrying it in front of him having had to show it to security on entering the bar. If the bar is well covered with security cameras, it may be odd that the two images of show him moving about and were photographed from behind -- no images of him at a bar ordering a drink, for example.

by Anonymousreply 30September 2, 2024 9:15 AM

Mental health crisis with impending departure from the Marines on Sept 9?

Reported sightings of him on base three times since leaving Coyote Grill on August 25 including:

Neither. This one's too easy...

If the restaurant he was at is above the cliff, then Mr. Bailey was taking 'selfies' atop the cliff before he missed his backward step and fell to his death. Not suicide - death by selfie. I'm calling it now.

by Anonymousreply 60September 4, 2024 7:11 AM

This is so bizarre. WTF?

Since his disappearance, there have been unconfirmed sightings of him around the base. According to Cameron's family, a Marine saw him on Saturday, August 31, at approximately 11:30 p.m. as he was running toward the ocean in apparent distress, as reported by Fox 5/KUSI.

"The gentleman we talked to said Bailey looked so afraid, so distressed. I just need to know that he's OK," Cameron's mother, Juliette England, told the local news media. "We just want to get him across the finish line," his family said.

Since the Marine was reported missing to Carlsbad Police on August 25, Fox 5/KUSI reported that surveillance footage has emerged showing Cameron on base at an ATM on Wednesday, August 28—three days before the other Marine told his family that he saw the 23-year-old.

"There are confirmed sightings on Camp Pendleton near Bailey's barracks. I personally spoke to his fellow Marine who encountered him this past Saturday night around 11 p.m.," Sharie Finn, founder of nonprofit organization The RAD Movement—which helps families searching for missing relatives—told Newsweek.

"He was very clear that Bailey was in distress. Bailey specifically told his fellow Marine that he has been on base the entire time since returning from the Coyote Bar and Grill last Saturday 8/25. He did attempt to help Bailey before Bailey fled to a location on base. It was reported that they searched for two hours with dogs and thermals and they were unable to locate Bailey," she added.

No longer considered missing by the Marines.

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton on Wednesday announced it is no longer considering Lance Corporal Bailey Cameron as a missing person.

The 23-year-old, who is scheduled to exit the Marine Corps on Sept. 9., was reported missing on Aug. 25, a day after video shows him leaving Coyote Bar and Grill in Carlsbad the night before without his backpack, sunglasses and phone. Since his disappearance, there have been unconfirmed sightings of him around the base.

Capt James C. Sartain, with Camp Pendleton, released a statement Wednesday saying that “recent activities connected to Lance Corporal Bailey Cameron indicate he has been on the installation.”

“Therefore, he is no longer considered a missing person, but base officials continue attempts to locate and contact Lance Corporal Bailey Cameron and are actively working with his parents to encourage him to return to his unit in accordance with his official service obligations,” Sartain said.

Not considered missing but they still haven't found him.

Yeah, they really seem to have their shit together.

by Anonymousreply 66September 5, 2024 7:12 AM

R66 Within law enforcement, "missing person" has a specific definition, the primary example being you can't file a missing person's report until someone's not been seen for so many hours. Since there have now been confirmed reports that he's been seen, he's not missing. At this point, it sounds more like he doesn't want to be found. That's not missing. This will probably lead them to shifting, changing, and/or reallocating which resources they've been using to try to find him, but as the article says it doesn't mean they've stopped looking altogether or trying to get him to make contact.

by Anonymousreply 67September 5, 2024 8:41 AM

How did he get back on base? I assume he had to use an ID. The description of his items left behind doesn't mention a missing ID. Wouldn't the Marines have known he came back on base then? This is very strange. A mental health crisis sounds likely if he's trying to hoof around unnoticed on base.

by Anonymousreply 68September 5, 2024 9:16 AM

r67 "confirmed reports that he's been seen" - Incorrect.

The article/post to which you replied still says his sightings are unconfirmed.

by Anonymousreply 69September 5, 2024 9:41 AM

Not to mention there is a little thing called desertion.

The military takes this seriously, even though he only had about 10 days to go.

They don't just let that go.

by Anonymousreply 73September 5, 2024 11:55 AM

He's NOT missing. We just don't know where he is.

You know, like what happens all the time with your car keys.

by Anonymousreply 74September 5, 2024 12:17 PM

R57 there is no fucking cliff. i literally live right where this is. it's on flat ground in a big bougie shopping center on the back corner directly next to the train tracks. to get to the ocean you have to cross the highway 101. there's no cliff anywhere within walking distance of this location. i could be mistaken but i don't think you'd see a cliff over the ocean until you walked as far south as solana beach which would be ludicrous in this case.

by Anonymousreply 75September 5, 2024 12:22 PM

R75 and it's exactly two blocks from the shore, very close. this plaza is where you'd park before you walked to the beach.

by Anonymousreply 80September 5, 2024 2:08 PM

by Anonymousreply 81September 5, 2024 2:25 PM

These are new details. AWOL with only two weeks left in his enlistment? Why would he go AWOL on his own military base?

[QUOTE]A Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton who was reported missing in August was seen on base and therefore "no longer considered a missing person," base officials said Wednesday.

by Anonymousreply 84September 5, 2024 9:44 PM

[r67], what are you talking about? There are almost always alleged spottings of missing persons in missing person cases and the missing person is still considered missing until found.

This marine should still be considered missing until he’s located and considered safe and reunited with his family.

by Anonymousreply 85September 7, 2024 9:21 AM

R83 this particular bar isn't near the cliffs, it's at a crosswalk directly across from the shore at the major intersection in carlsbad village and the 101. there's no way to get to the shore from that bar without walking past a million cctv cameras. to get to any cliff more significant than one flight of stairs like the shore entrance by tamarack and 101 would be quite a walk.

by Anonymousreply 86September 7, 2024 9:48 AM

R86 if he fell down the cliff into the water i think he would have had to walk north or south along the train tracks until he got away from the density of the village. i'm pretty sure you can walk directly onto the sand from parts of ocean blvd but i could be wrong because i hate the beach and rarely go. most of the spots require going down a small flight of stairs, but they're not steep. it's like one story down to sand. to drop from a cliff directly into the ocean or fall far enough to be killed would require walking a good long way away from the bar. the only way i could think of that happening is if he walked north on the tracks and somehow got out around the roundabout between carlsbad and oceanside on the 101.
