Hello Dad—I’m in JAIL

Have you ever been in jail?

Tell us about it.

I spent a night in the clink for public drunkenness when I was one month out of college - along with 5 friends. It was horrifying. We were just loud and rowdy and went to a public park to play, stupidly.

by Anonymousreply 1August 30, 2024 6:37 PM

I was put in a holding cell for about an hour when I was picked up walking Santa Monica Blvd in the '80s.

Is “walking” a euphemism?

What's a dad?

How's the action on the SanMonB?

by Anonymousreply 6August 30, 2024 6:48 PM

I've told DL about it before. I spent a month in jail for supposedly not paying a cab fare, plus being drunk. I was actually gay bashed by an overzealous cop. They dropped the felony charge of assaulting an officer after my sister took photos of the handprints all over my neck and back. One thing I learned in jail: if you're tired enough, you'll sleep and if you're hungry enough, you'll eat. My Dad and me ex-BF visited me every day they could.

[quote] Is “walking” a euphemism?

In my neck of the woods it's called "on the stroll" or "on the game".

by Anonymousreply 8August 30, 2024 6:53 PM

When I was 26, I was arrested twice within a month. Never happened before or since. I spent probably 36 hours all told.

The Beverly Hills jail was nicer than my apartment at the time.

If it ever happened again, I couldn't deal. I've become clausterphobic in the years since. Im 54 now.

And when the inmates are horny enough… what a lucky bottom you must have been!

R7 - another case of ACAB. Unfortunately, made-up charges by overzealous cops are not uncommon.

by Anonymousreply 11August 30, 2024 6:54 PM

Spent the month of November 2022 at the county jail. Bf dropped the charges of when we had fought the prosecutor's office didn't follow thru, and I couldn't be around him.... It wasn't that bad. A bunch of gangsters that needed mental care is what I got out of it. No one bothered me. I read 5 books and worked in the kitchen. They watch a lot of NCIS and sports. The water to shower is hot. I saw around 4 fights.

by Anonymousreply 12August 30, 2024 6:58 PM

I have spent a night in jail and it was weird in the extreme.

I dropped acid and went to work. I don’t know if I was scheduled to work at that time, nor why I went there if I wasn’t. This was a long time ago.

I was a waitress and the restaurant manager and I must’ve had some disagreement. All I can remember thinking is something like, “What the fuck is wrong here? Why can’t I get through to this jerk?”

He called in reinforcements and pretty soon a cop who appeared to me at the time to be at least 25 feet tall ushered me into the back seat of his car, where I was interested to see that I wouldn’t be able to open the doors.

Some time later somebody ushered me into a room with bars instead of walls, that had another door I couldn’t open.

In this little barred room was a woman who was purple who never once, all night, shut up. I really, really, really wanted her to stop babbling, too. It was bad enough that she was purple.

I’m guessing my mom and dad must’ve moved me back home after that because I know I drove my car back from Seattle to make an appearance in court. I have NO memory of any of that except that I do remember the drive because my windshield kept icing up.

This November I will have been clean and sober for 40 years and shit like the above is why. Acid was HORRIBLE for me and booze turned out to be no better.

by Anonymousreply 13August 30, 2024 7:16 PM

I feel so much better about spending time on Datalounge now that I know the place is riddled with criminals.

by Anonymousreply 14August 30, 2024 8:11 PM

It was a victimless crime, r14.

by Anonymousreply 15August 30, 2024 8:13 PM

Momma's mussy is all a-quiver about this thread! Like an aspen in a windstorm!

by Anonymousreply 16August 30, 2024 8:17 PM

When I was a freshman in College...and the law said you had to bev21, we heard about this local bar that served underaged kids. So we went there. It was a neighborhood dive bar not far from the college. The bar tender called the campus [olice and the bar got "raided" and we were taken down to the jail. We sat for a long time. We thought they'd lock us up, but instead they gave us all a ticket for loitering and sent us back to campus with a "strong lecture." Does it count?

by Anonymousreply 17August 30, 2024 8:26 PM

I'm right there with ya, R13. I've been clean and sober since 1981, and it's just by the skin of my teeth that I didn't end up in the Army prison at Ft. Leavenworth. Almost all my buddies did... Heroin is a helluva drug.

But no, I've never even seen the inside of a jail cell, except on TV (which I'm sure doesn't count).

I want R12's experience. I just need some time away from my life to read, work out, and reflect. I could do that on vacation, but jail is cheaper.

*Now* a warning, r20?

by Anonymousreply 23August 30, 2024 9:39 PM

I don’t think this technically counts. But I was picked up for walking late at night without ID.

I’d been living in a country where for much of the year it was too hot to walk outdoors in the daytime. I’d made a habit of walking quite late, when the temperatures were bearable.

Sometimes I’d detour by way of the beach. I came to treasure those walks.

One night the cops pulled over, started questioning me. They refused to believe I didn’t know the law required carrying ID at all times. I probably should have known, but I honestly didn’t.

They took me to the precinct house, made me stew there for a few hours without ever explaining what was happening or would happen.

Initially I was kind of freaked out but after a while I figured nothing would happen. They finally let me go just as the sun was rising, which was a drag because I had to rush home and change for work and get to work.

by Anonymousreply 24August 30, 2024 9:45 PM

My friend was arrested in the middle of the night for falling asleep on the subway with his feet up on the seat. He said the cops were going to let him go until they checked him out and discovered an unpaid ticket for public urination. Spent Sunday day and night in a holding cell until he could see a judge on Monday morning. All charges were dropped. He said the cell was filled with all sorts of scary types and there was an open toilet. He got a bologna sandwich for lunch and dinner. Needless to say he was scared straight after that.

by Anonymousreply 25August 30, 2024 9:58 PM

That shared toilet out in the open (middle of the cell) is a real turn-off.

I knew someone who was always in and out of jail (different from prison) and he seemed to have no fear of jail. I.e., didn't seem to change his behavior to stay under the radar.

Anyway, one day I just asked him about that situation with the toilet in the middle of the cell, wondering if he ever got used to that. He said he hated it.

I got a couple of DUIs in college 30 years ago. It was pretty uneventful. They put me in a cell, where I slept on an uncomfortable iron bed with no mattress. Then in the morning They woke me up and put me in a community room with the other arestees, where we watched TV until I was bailed out. I don't remember being served food, but I do remember the prominent jar of condoms at the check-in desk when I first got there. I'm sure that was some kind of intimidation tactic on the part of the cops.

by Anonymousreply 27August 30, 2024 11:07 PM

From Was (Not Was). Certain Eldergays may also remember their "Walk The Dinosaur."

Two or more DUIs in college and it was "uneventful"? WTF? I hope you quit drinking.

Former law enforcement here. I knew a probation officer who gave out condoms to her clients. The point was: stop procreating, you broke dummy.

by Anonymousreply 29August 30, 2024 11:11 PM

Not myself, but to visit a family member.

by Anonymousreply 30August 31, 2024 12:08 AM

No way in hell but two of my male cousins have. My eldest first cousin was fathered by a psychopath and born to a mother who never wanted him so his life of doing hard drugs and stealing cars was inevitable. A younger one doesn't understand what consent is and served 33 months on a rape charge. He broke his mother's heart and shocked the whole family.

[quote]And when the inmates are horny enough… what a lucky bottom you must have been!

No, I'm not a bottom, and I had a nervous breakdown in anticipation of serving my sentence, since it was delayed because the jail was full. I was lucky enough to have an older prisoner (Daniel R, a gentle, muscular meatcutter) take me under his wing and protect me. The initial stress of fearing rape really did a number on me and is the reason I referred to my BF as my ex. We're still best friends, but we never again made love together after my incarceration.

I was held overnight in the holding cell of the local police station, mainly because I was gay I think. Got pulled over at Dupont Circle in DC for riding my scooter without a helmet. Was driving a friend home and only had one helmet so I made him wear it. Pulled me over, handcuffed me and brought me to the station. Kept me handcuffed with my hands behind my back sitting on a wood chair for hours. They finally let my friend come in the morning and pay a "fine" to get me out. Still think it was homophobia and the fact that I was white and friend was black and the officers hated that. Still pisses me off.

Three times for DUIs (this forum is anonymous for a reason) ...

1st time was in college. 24 hours and it was very uneventful. Shared my cell with 3 other men who were there for DUIs and were harmless. We were not allowed to bring in books or anything so it was extremely boring.

2nd time was for 10 days. This was in in country jail, and I mixed with "real" criminals some of the time (in jail - not prison), but the sleeping quarters was still arranged by "severity", and my area/pod was DUI's/shoplifting/contempt of court (didn't pay child support). All of us were train-wrecks but again, harmless.

3rd TIME was for 30 days. Again county jail. Again in with non-violent/non-drug offenses. I could leave for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week to go to work (which I did). The difference here was you could bring in books so at least I had something to do when I wasn't sleeping. What really stood out to me about this stint, was how many men were just fuck-ups. Like they came back from "work" high/drunk. Sometimes they got busted, sometimes they didn't.

I thought I was bad, but these guys put me to shame.

I lost like 15 pounds from a combination of having to take the bus/walk, and not drink over 30 days.

by Anonymousreply 34August 31, 2024 12:32 AM

Yes, I stopped drinking after the 3rd time.

by Anonymousreply 36August 31, 2024 12:33 AM

3 days for DUI 7years ago. Came in on Friday night, wasn't let out until the following Monday night.

Food was shit, but otherwise I read a book and a half to pass the time.

I was homeless and living in my car and two other people "convinced" me (read: made me) to drive another person somewhere. Really stupid, but that was a very bad time in my life to say the least.

by Anonymousreply 37August 31, 2024 12:38 AM

Please let me condole you r7. I knew my typical, bitchy DL-cliche prison sex comment might be triggering, but I went through with it.

Thanks for sharing a bit of your perspective and trauma. I’m sorry you’ve had to experience such fallout from your time in the slammer.

About 5 years ago I did weekend jail for 4 weekends due to shoplifting.

Basically you show up to the county jail at 7am (better not be late) and were released at 5pm. We would all get on a school bus to go to different locations and do yard work for various public buildings/parks.

It was actually fun getting to meet the different people (almost all were due to DUIs) but the last weekend you had to stay behind and be put in a private cell for the entire 9 hours. It was awful. I slept most of the time and did some reading. We could bring our own books. We could also bring our own lunches so no nasty bologna sandwiches.

There definitely is a hierarchy in the county jail system. As we were being led to the cells, the officer started yelling at us and acting real shitty then the lady officer at the desk goes, "they're just Weekenders." He then turned completely on a dime, apologized to us and couldn't have been nicer.

Like I said very boring and I peed in the metal toilet by the bed. I tried to sleep but it was a thin mat on concrete. No sex at all cause it was basically a small private room with just a small window to look out of.
