Four-year-old accidentally shatters Bronze Age jar at museum
A 4-year-old boy accidentally smashed a Bronze Age jar at an archeological museum in Haifa, Israel.
The ancient artifact, which experts say was at least 3,500 years old, was on display without a glass case near the institution’s entrance at the time of the incident.
In a statement emailed to CNN on Wednesday, the Hecht Museum defended its decision to present certain objects without protective glass, adding that its founder Reuben Hecht had emphasized making artifacts accessible to the public.

Speaking to the BBC, the child’s father said his son had “pulled the jar slightly” on a visit to the museum last Friday because he was “curious about what was inside.” The man added that he was shocked to see his son beside the broken artifact and had initially thought, “It wasn’t my child that did it.”
While archaeologists have uncovered similar vessels in the past, most of them were broken or incomplete, according to the museum. The fact the displayed item was discovered intact made it an “impressive find,” the statement added.

This is ignorant of me, but who the fuck is going to museums in Israel right now? Don't they have bigger fish to fry?

R5. That's not the issue. The father wasn't watching his kid in a place where he should have been.

Two thing here:
1) No parenting
2) Plexiglas was invented for a reason

Thank you, r13. Why that observation took 13 replies is really shocking. DL, I'm very disappointed in you tonight.

What I've never understood is that the people responsible or the parents NEVER seem to be fined or responsible for the damage.
If you come into my home and break something expensive that you shouldn't have touched in the first place, you can damn well bet I'll be asking you to replace the item.
There are accidents which are no one's fault. Then, there's deciding to pick-up an object or touch something that any moron would know shouldn't be touched.

I went into one of the great myseums of the world, let’s just say it was MOMA, its not, but in the same class…and touched a piece of art. I thought it was a coat rack to be honest, anyway all hell broke loose. They were quite nice actually, but I upset a lot of people. It turns out that every squar inch of the place is under observation. You can’t see the cameras but they are there.

Exactly, R17. And he tries to underplay it by saying his son "pulled the jar slightly." Oh, but it was just slightly. Bitch, your child shouldn't be pulling anything that's not his.

R1 The child was probably free ranging, of course it itsn't the parents fault!

That means it was the jar’s fault.

I have a theory that many of the museum artifacts on display are reproduction for exactly this reason. And theft. And there are vast storage bunkers with the authentic loot. Not for everything, obviously, but take dinosaur skeletons for e.g. I swear the ones on display are all fake. Maybe this Bronze Age jar was a reproduction hence why the museum is so nonchalant.

Had a similar experience as r21. I was flailing my hands around because I was talking but this was over some partial Greek mosaic and I kept setting off the infrared sensors over the display before I finally realized. No one came running though, to my surprise. Embarrassing!

I once set off an alarm at the Smithsonian because i brushed up against a display of a slave cabin.
Very embarrassing.
On the other hand, many years ago i managed to touch the Rosetta Stone - this was before the British Museum put it behind plexiglass.
No alarms at all.

I read that the museum people were extremely forgiving. They have a policy ( the delicate genius has a policy) against putting plexiglass around such artifacts — it would interfere with the dignity of the artifact , or some shit like that .
They said it would be repaired, would not be surrounded by a barrier and the four year old is welcome back .

As i understand it, the museum director went to the 4-year-old’s house & brike some of his toys.
Now they’re even.
