Why did they cut it out of the movie??

I remember this movie came out around the same time as Boogie Nights and flopped big time. Boogie Nights is a very good film. This any good?

It's decent R1.
Ryan is the best part of the movie.
It's fun and a bit campy.
The old lady was hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 28, 2024 2:38 AM |
No it’s not any good. It’s only to be watched for peak RyGod eye candy, just like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Cruel Intentions.

The directors cut is like watching a completely different movie. It's a huge improvement over what was released.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 28, 2024 2:39 AM |
It’s not a good movie. It doesn’t capture Studio 54 at all. But yes, it’s great to watch for Ryan.

Breckin Meyer is so lucky!
It's an odd pairing for a gay kiss, but still hot.
Breckin had done a number of movies before 54, including "Clueless" with Alicia Silverstone, and "Rat Race" with Whoopi Goldberg.
I wonder what happened to him?

I feel like the 90s Hollywood was too glossy to capture the 1970s and it was too soon to capture the accuracy. It’s like wardrobe and makeup and set design still found the 70s too ugly to find the magic or accuracy of it. Aside from Mike Myers, everyone looked like they were from the 90s.
Today, a Studio 54 movie would work in the sense that retro and vintage and makeup / hair / set accuracy is more likely to happen which is what the movie needed. But in the 90s it was still “70s hair? Ew!” when the movie was being made.

I'm disappointed that all of the gay stuff in op's link got cut from the movie.
WTF???

R8 It was the 90s.

R6 He possessed a lot of qualities playing certain roles in his youth. He was short and odd looking but still handsome and quirky. He was always cast perfectly in the characters he played, including the one in Studio 54.
He just aged out of those roles and had a hard time landing anything good once he hit his 30s.
He needs a streaming show where he can get naked like Eric Dane in “Euphoria”. Then he’ll have a comeback.

Wasn't the problem that Miramax was bought by Disney either while the movie was being made or right after?
Disney thought the cast (including Phillippe, Meyer, Neve Campbell and Mike Meyers) would make it a big hit with teens, so they cut a bunch of stuff to try to get a PG-13 (which didn't work)
There was a big article about it in the late, lamented Movieline magazine.

R15 what did they think they had— a night club NYC version of Grease. Damn cunts. Ironically it still flopped. That’s what one gets when they try to whitewash our representation.

That’s a boner killer

Breaking has made a ton of money off of Robot Chicken.
He's dating Bob Saget's widow these days.
I found him way series in this than the overrated Philippe.

R20's post makes absolutely no sense.
Is it A.I.?

Who would have thought Ryan would have a massive cock to go with his good looks? Usually it’s one or the other.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 28, 2024 7:45 PM |
R18???
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 28, 2024 10:44 PM |
Yeah, it was a tone problem, they couldn’t choose. If you are going to make a movie about a decadent disco who employed go go boys as bait, make one of them the major character then sanitize all the good stuff you have a problem (not least credibility).
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 28, 2024 10:51 PM |
Just watch the directors cut. It's not sanitised. A movie based on a well known formula/narrative - Horatio Alger - young man from the provinces. Easy to watch and some good performances.

R10 Is it true their marriage ended because he started getting insanely jealous of Reese’s success.

From some angles, Breckin has the unfortunate problem of looking a bit like DL fav cockgobbler Aaron Schock.

Do you call everything average and above “massive”?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 29, 2024 3:31 AM |
R28 is on the money! Don't bother watching the original. But make the effort to watch the Director's Cut. I believe Starz has it. It's how I watched it last year.......5 times in 3 days. It kind of gets addictive.
Extra Bonus: A lot less Neve Campbell
