NYT: Jennifer Lopez Is Becoming an Elizabeth Taylor for a New Generation
by Anonymous | reply 90 | August 23, 2024 5:37 PM |
No, because people actually LIKED Liz Taylor.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 22, 2024 7:01 PM |
And how much did JLo pay for this “opinion” piece?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 22, 2024 7:01 PM |
ROFL! Kinda late for that.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 22, 2024 7:02 PM |
She’ll need to eat more.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 22, 2024 7:04 PM |
Good Lord, no. Elizabeth tried to have a little class. JLo still has too much of the " Jenny from the block" in her.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 22, 2024 7:05 PM |
She’s half the woman Liz was.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 22, 2024 7:05 PM |
Sometimes I really miss Joan Rivers...
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 22, 2024 7:07 PM |
As big as Liz got her ass was never that enormous.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 22, 2024 7:07 PM |
Did anyone read the article before leaping to conclusions? I enjoyed this piece and how it differentiated Liz’s selfless service. I’d also debate whether the location of that “line” is static or dynamic relative to the relevant art you’re continuing to produce. If you’re producing more divorces than hits… I don’t think you need to reach the Liz water mark to be known for your relationships more than your art.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | August 22, 2024 7:08 PM |
Sure, JLo is a star and all, but let's be real - Elizabeth Taylor had talent that lit up the screen and a film legacy that'll be remembered forever. JLo might keep the tabloids busy, but no one's going to be talking about her movies decades from now. Liz gave us cinematic history; JLo's just giving us tawdry PR stunts.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 22, 2024 7:12 PM |
This assumption is HORSE SHIT
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 22, 2024 7:12 PM |
More like Maria Montez
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 22, 2024 7:14 PM |
Ok, I’ll play ball and try to be objective. Even though I don’t see the two as directly comparable, it’s hard to ignore the parallels in their marriages. Both have been public punching bags at different points in their careers, often more famous for their looks than their talent. And while Liz’s acting career is obviously better, she had her share of performances that were criticized, much like JLo’s, often dismissed as melodramatic or just another pretty face.
As for the article’s claim that Liz slowed down later in life, it’s a bit misleading. She was still working well into her mid-50s, mainly on television, and didn’t truly step back until her 60s - well past the age JLo is now.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 22, 2024 7:15 PM |
I’m young but I don’t think Liz ever gave off mean girl vibes to the general public like JLo. People need to realize when they get older people get tired of that bitchy shit.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 22, 2024 7:18 PM |
One time late in her life, Elizabeth Taylor gave an interview with Barbara Walters on TV and during the interview. Elizabeth talked like she had no moisture in her mouth whatsoever every single word that she made a an awful kind of a noise like a cow, dragging its foot out of the mud, it was very very hard for me to listen to it. I told my mom to turn the channel cause I couldn’t stand it anymore. She told me to shut up.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 22, 2024 7:20 PM |
Even Kim K is viewed as humble and mad sweet when it comes to the public and other celebs.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 22, 2024 7:20 PM |
R11 People will probably remember Selena and Out of Sight. I think JLo really was hurt when she didn’t get that Oscar nod for Hustlers. It’s like her bitchiness went into overdrive after that.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 22, 2024 7:22 PM |
A puff piece about a lousy singer and Lifetime level actress who became a singer after fucking her way to the top as a fly girl.
A singer who lipsyncs constantly not only to her own heavily edited voice but to the voice of the original demo singer which was retained in the chorus which she then tries to pass off as her own.
In the same way Brenda Dickson posts stolen or stock photos of luxury hotels and Parisian breakfasts to pass off as her own.
Liz Taylor could act. She was gorgeous. She was messy at times but had class. She knew how to dress. She was a two time Academy Award winner.
J. Lo was a Payola Princess from Puerto Rico (I don't claim her) in the early stages of her career. She got lucky on top of all the dicks she sucked.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 22, 2024 7:25 PM |
J-Lodze is the equivalent of no one.
She's her own breed of opportunistic marketer of very, very little talent, consumed in the denial of her age and ravages, and fact that the record of her "life" is full of using bad men while they use her.
She's rotted.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 22, 2024 7:36 PM |
Comparing JLo to Elizabeth is like comparing cubic zirconia to the Hope Diamond. Yes, they’ve both had their share of high-profile marriages, but that’s where the similarities end. Liz wasn’t just a movie star; she was Hollywood royalty; a living legend with a filmography that defined an era. JLo, on the other hand, is more of a pop culture phenomenon, closer to a Kardashian than a cinematic icon.
Now, let’s talk talent. Liz could act circles around just about anyone (when she was invested), delivering performances that consistently left audiences and critics enthralled. Cleopatra? Cat on a Hot Tin Roof? Those aren’t just films; they’re cinematic landmarks. JLo may have some frothy roles under her belt, but let’s be honest - no one’s putting Maid in Manhattan on the same pedestal as Virginia Woolf. JLo can be fun and entertaining, but she’s not redefining cinema like Elizabeth did.
And let’s not forget legacy. La Liz didn’t just leave behind a string of husbands and a few good movies; she was a pioneer, a force of nature who used her fame to advocate for causes that truly mattered, like AIDS awareness. JLo is more likely to be remembered for her Vegas residencies and Versace dresses than for changing the world. JLo ONLY cares about JLo. Elizabeth Taylor loved people, and she was one of a kind. No one - especially not Jenny from the Block - can touch that.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 22, 2024 7:40 PM |
Let’s be real—JLo is the definition of a multi-hyphenate queen, and she doesn’t get nearly the credit she deserves. This woman has been dominating the game for decades, juggling singing, acting, dancing, producing, and still looking like she just stepped out of a time machine. People love to throw shade, but you can’t deny the hustle. JLo doesn’t just perform; she outworks everyone in the room and makes it look effortless. And let’s not forget, she put Latinas on the map in Hollywood, proving that you can be fierce, fabulous, and successful without fitting into anyone’s box. So yeah, JLo is seriously underrated, and it’s time we all start giving her the flowers she deserves.

Let’s see amongst her peers
Queen Bey is the better performer
Selma Hayek the better actress
Janet the better dancer
Julia Roberts the more iconic

Jennifer Lopez is the ultimate LATINA goddess. Her talent, her style, her fierce determination. She’s not just a star, she’s a celestial force, and I’m absolutely obsessed with every single thing she does.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 22, 2024 8:03 PM |
The world got to live everything with Liz: The good, the bad, the ugly, the drunk. From childhood through death. From delicate beauty to fierce advocate. Her unapologetic, warts-and-all persona was befitting a legend.
J-Lo is talented, beautiful, successful, but so controlled that there is nothing relatable about her.
Other than multiple marriages, they have nothing in common.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 22, 2024 8:09 PM |
R25 I used to love JLo a lot too though I never really cared for music. However I think she has some type of personality disorder.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 22, 2024 8:09 PM |
JLo is much more of a Joan Crawford - a hoofer who made herself a star through fire-and-ice determination. Fierce? I guess, but too much of a control freak (and an increasingly misguided one as she gets older) to be truly relatable.
It would be fun to watch her and Mariah do a 2030s version of What Ever Happened to Baby Jane!
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 22, 2024 8:12 PM |
J-pez did alright for starting out as a Fly Girl on In Living Color. She has peaked. She will never star in another hit movie. She will never have another hit song. Never an Oscar. Never a Grammy. She's a flop now.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 22, 2024 9:25 PM |
JLo is more of a Raquel Welch or Joan Collins of her time. Mainly famous for hanging in there. And somehow I don't see JLo getting The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy, much less two acting Oscars!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 22, 2024 9:35 PM |
At one point in time, every man in the straight universe was in love with Liz and her violet eyes. While JLo was known for her ass. That's all that needs to be said. J Low Class.

Elizabeth is an icon and JLo will never be.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 22, 2024 10:31 PM |
Elizabeth Taylor in the white negligée in COAHTR is a moment, an icon. J-Lo does not have any iconic moments or images to her credit really.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 22, 2024 10:32 PM |
It’s like you all don’t realize that even Elizabeth Taylor is just another myth created by tabloids and tv. You only love her because the machine told you to just like you only hate Jlo because the machine told you to. Plenty of people hated Liz when she got fat. The machine demoted her to late night punchline. All bets were off. That’s how it goes. They are characters on a long running soap opera called Hollywood and yes, they basically played the same role.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | August 22, 2024 10:40 PM |
JLo is more Googie Gomez, than Liz Taylor.

R34 Of course we know Liz was a product of the Hollywood studio machine. She had her ups and downs - all those marriages, affairs, the booze, the weight!. But she did it all with a certain elegance and glamour. We cared about her, She had a vulnerability. She was a great big fat drunk for a while. And then she got a second chance when she got sober and lost that weight. We cheered for her. Who's cheering for JLo?

Elizabeth Taylor was the Catherine Zeta Jones of her time. Young people don’t know and they don’t care. JLo could do Cleopatra, but could Liz do Booty?

No.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | August 23, 2024 1:39 AM |
I don’t dislike JLo. She’s a beautiful woman & showed promise in a few films.
I don’t know too much about the industry, so I may be way off base, but I believe she should have & could have had a more successful career as an actress than as a singer. I know she’s unconventional, & it bothers me that she may not have been able to get to the top of an acting career due to type casting, because I do believe she’s much more talented at acting than singing.
Back to the point I am attempting to make: I think she may have received some really shitty career guidance. Maybe there wasn’t much of a choice, and maybe she had to keep on singing to make money, and if so, that sucks, because there was a time when watching her in film was really enjoyable.
It sucks that her professional life has been sidelined by her romantic relationships, engagements, break ups & divorces. Maybe she really cannot have it all, & if that’s the case, I hope she understands that she’s not alone, because most people cannot have it all, as well.
Eventually, one should ask themselves if they have enough.

Taylor took a big risk speaking out about AIDS and raising funds for treatments and possible cures.
Jello, when supposedly at her happiest, cashed in on her rship to make a handful of flops, not caring that she was embarrassing her partner. She'll probably end up with her manager.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | August 23, 2024 2:47 AM |
I could’ve seen J.Lo being more successful in TV than movies. I think she would’ve been great playing a cop or detective in a crime show.
But I feel that she probably thought that was beneath her, so she focused in having a pop music career well into her 30s and competed against all the other pop tarts of the late 90s/early 2000s.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | August 23, 2024 3:58 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 68 | August 23, 2024 4:03 AM |
Jennifer Lopez is the very definition of everything that’s wrong with modern entertainment. A shallow, talentless, self-absorbed tart who’s managed to claw her way to the top by sheer force of ego and nothing more. Contemptible doesn’t even begin to describe it.
She prances around as if she’s some kind of sex goddess, but she’s nothing but a vulgar, overhyped spectacle. Her so-called “music” is forgettable, her acting is laughable, and don’t even get me started on that horrendous, overexposed body she flaunts at every opportunity. It’s revolting.
Jennifer Lopez has built her entire career on exploiting herself, turning every move into a headline, every relationship into a publicity stunt. It’s all so desperate, so calculated, and it makes my skin crawl that anyone would compare her to Liz, the last of the truly grand stars. Jennifer Lopez has no respect for the craft, no understanding of what it truly means to be an artist. She’s just another product, packaged and sold to the masses, with nothing real or genuine to offer.
And the way she manipulates the media, always hungry for attention, always making sure she’s the center of every conversation. It’s gut churning. She’s a parasite, feeding off the fame she doesn’t deserve, and I have nothing but contempt for her. Jennifer Lopez is an insult to real talent, to real artistry, and the sooner people see through her shallow facade, the better.

I don't mind trashing Lopez. With her record of mistreating others, she certainly deserves it, but I don't get propping Affleck up in contrast like he isn't equally as damaged and fucked in the head as she is. If you notice, he can't keep a partner any longer than J.lo. Remember, right before the bennifer reuion, he was doing fake pap strolls with another latina and many other women before that. He also spent an entire decade cheating and making a fool of Jen Garner while apparently secretly emailing and writting love letters to J.lo. the whole time. That's such a shitty thing to do to the mother of your kids. Take away his fame and his money, and he would be just another balding, twice divorced junkie going through a midlife crisis like so many other men in his age bracket. He's proven to be a lousy husband and, by extension, a lousy father as well because there's no way he can fully be present for his kids due to his addictions and his weird, very public relationships. I agree, J.lo is no Liz Taylor, and Ben is not her Dick Burton. He's just a dick.

Your defense of JLo reminds me of a scene from Boardwalk Empire, r22. Two characters were talking about Andrew Carnegie's headstone. One of the them says something to the effect of "I'll tell you what it doesn't say. It doesn't say he worked hard". You argument for JLo is basically that she works really hard. That's not enough if a person wants to achieve legendary status. She's a little light in the achievement area. No one would accuse her of being lazy.
