Did you know that the US Air Force has flight attendants?

I just found this guy's Vlog where he documents his new job as an Air Force flight attendant.

And I am SO jealous.

He gets to fly all over the world, stay in hotels on base, and hobnob with military brass.

The only difference is that the military flight attendants have to prepare all the food for flights, including cooking and cleaning.

He also has to drive the shuttle, and load the bags onto the airplane.

But still, if you have to be in the military, this has got to be one of the better jobs.

And when he gets out of the military, I'm certain that the commercial airlines will snap him up and pay for his experience.

Lucky guy.

Do they have to blow the pilots?

by Anonymousreply 3August 22, 2024 10:12 AM

I think it's adorable that they do all the cooking on the plane, but isn't that a fire hazard or something?

And what if they're horrible cooks? Do they get fired?

I mean, the guy said he has zero cooking experience, and yet he's cooking and serving meals for an entire plane full of passengers. That's kind of hilarious to me. I mean, what could go wrong?? lol

There's so much prep involved in their job. They have to create the menus and purchase the food before the "mission," then prep the food on base, then transport it to the plane, then cook the food, serve the food, and also clean up.

That's so much work!

After watching this, it's clear that commercial flight attendants have it so much easier than military flight attendants.

"Have to" or "GET to"?

by Anonymousreply 5August 22, 2024 2:04 PM

Girl I’m pretty sure he is a flight attendant for the president and vice presidents airplanes only.

Perhaps the Secretary of State.

Any government flights on an Air Force-operated airplane probably has an Air Force flight attendant

by Anonymousreply 6August 22, 2024 2:23 PM

He's so cute. Love his enthusiasm. Bet he smells cookies!

Bet he gets railed by the hunky military guys he meets during flights.

by Anonymousreply 11August 22, 2024 3:23 PM

It’s probably not good for National security that he posts all this, he should be discharged.

by Anonymousreply 12August 22, 2024 3:25 PM

I’m not going to watch the rest of his videos because I’m not really interested in tours of spartan hotel rooms and hearing about his every move, but I don’t think he actually cooks. He shops and preps and stores supplies.

by Anonymousreply 13August 22, 2024 3:48 PM

Here's a peek behind the curtains. I have (as a civilian) worked with generals, admirals, and the odd occasional cabinet member, and their budgets are getting stingier by the day. Most of it it disappeared when the IRS decided domestic staff were taxable.

That's exactly what I was thinking!

Isn't this some kind of breach of security, or something??

by Anonymousreply 15August 22, 2024 4:09 PM

At least in the first video he did not show any of the passengers. I assume he has permission. If he doesn’t, he’s a fool.

by Anonymousreply 16August 22, 2024 4:13 PM

[quote] I’m not going to watch the rest of his videos because I’m not really interested in tours of spartan hotel rooms and hearing about his every move, but I don’t think he actually cooks

What are you talking about??

You can see him actually cooking in skillets, on-board the plane.

I like watching his videos, because I'm so envious.

This guy gets to travel the world, he gets free food, free hotels, and free transportation. And he doesn't have to spend one penny of his own money!

Of course he has to work for it, but he's getting paid to do it.

This job is far better than a regular flight attendant job, because the routes are not set. So you're not doing some shitty domestic route over and over again. He travels the world.

And he never knows where he's going, because each "mission" is different. He's been to Australia, Japan, Sweden, India, Singapore, Thailand, and all over the country.

The best part is that depending on the length of the "mission," he can stay in one city for a prolonged period of time, without the fast turnover time that most flight attendants have to endure.

So he can just walk around a city and visit it, until the passengers have to leave.

Speaking of passengers, who ARE the passengers on these "missions?"

I had a buddy who was in the Coast Guard, and he was a flight attendant on the Secretary of Transportation's plane. This was back in the GHW Bush Administration.

Damn, I forgot that Cabinet members all travel on US government planes.

I would LOVE to be a flight attendant on Pete Buttigieg's plane!!

I guess this means we can figure out who he works for, by matching his country visits with a Cabinet member.

He was in India four days ago.

Which Cabinet member went to India recently??

No, we see someone browning meat back on the base. That’s prep work the day before the flight, and it’s not clear if it’s him or the cooks with him who is actually doing it.

I hope the guy makes the best of his situation and does have long layovers where he has time to explore where he lands, but in the comments there's a 1960s vision of sky steward glamor that doesn't remotely match up to what I can see as hir reality.

Free hotels, great...if they're decent hotels in decent locations. Not "on base" which for most places would put exploring a city out of easy reach.

Free food, sure, but he's not sampling Michelin-starred restaurants or even great cheap local restaurants with exotic fare, if he's lodged and fed on base, he may as well be in Milwaukee as Malaysia I suspect.

He may be a steward for government and military VIPs, but he's not travelling in much luxury it wouldn't seem, or even proximity to something worth seeing.

by Anonymousreply 26August 22, 2024 6:18 PM

[quote] Free hotels, great...if they're decent hotels in decent locations. Not "on base" which for most places would put exploring a city out of easy reach.

Well here's his hotel in Singapore.

Remember, not every city/country he visits, has a military base.

So they take civilian transportation to private hotels.

And this one in Singapore looks beautiful.

Keep in mind, this is some 20-something kid who (when he first graduated from flight attendant training) had never flown over an ocean before.

Now he has been to 6 different continents!

I know for sure that he's not looking for 5-star hotels or dining (like you are), because this kid seems VERY VERY grateful for all of his experiences.

To use a word from the Democratic National Convention, he exudes a lot of JOY.

That's what I love about his videos. Gratefulness and joy.

R43 he explains the process of how he got selected, in this video.

Apparently, he was in a different line of work in the military and then applied to become a flight attendant.

Supposedly, military people take a career assessment and placement tests, and then different jobs are recommended to them.

by Anonymousreply 44August 23, 2024 11:02 AM

^^^^

According to the above:

He did basic training in 2016 and was in the military for 6 years before switching careers.

Interestingly, he signed a contract with the military to enlist for only 6 years, so it looks like now he's going to stay for much later.

He was doing "defense language training," and failed, so then switched into an analyst job for the next five years.

He didn't like doing an office job, so he wanted to switch careers. He said he liked airplanes and liked to travel, which sparked an interest in becoming a flight attendant.

As for the cooking aspect of the job, he even had to go to culinary school!

Another fun fact, there were only TEN (10) available flight attendant positions at the time. So he was very lucky to get the job.

Is it true that Miss Lindsey inserted a clause in the USAF funding bill requiring that he approve of anyone who applies for this position?

by Anonymousreply 49August 23, 2024 10:31 PM

[quote] His videos are a great recruitment tool and targeted outreach for young gays.

I totally agree.

But that aside, just think of all the perks that he gets from the military.

I've been watching his videos from when he first passed training, to his flight safety training, to his culinary training, and it's so amazing that the military pays for all of this. And it's apart from the G.I. Bill. This is WHILE he is in the military.

This stuff is expensive if he had to pay for it on his own. But in the military, it's all free.

Plus, he gets to fly around from city to city for the training. He gets all meals paid for, and stays in nice hotels while attending training.

Even when he is training on a military base, they have a hotel-like place to stay, with a private room, fully equipped like a regular hotel.

I never realized how well the military treats its personnel.

And ALL of these training certificates he earns, will be very valuable if/when he looks for a job in the private sector.

Plus, this is all separate from his actual job, which as already mentioned, takes him around the world, with free transportation, meals, and hotels, and he gets paid for it.

I mean, this is seriously a DREAM JOB.

Am envious of this and am loving his videos.

As a teen, MANY decades ago, I wanted to become a flight attendant and travel the world but instead became a medical research scientist who ended up traveling the world, anyway, but only once or twice a year. In high school I got top grades in math and science and worked as a busboy/bellhop/waiter at a hotel for a year. The hotel manager and my high school counselor both told me that my sarcasm displayed seething contempt for the general public, that there would be no tips, pay is low, and it all just seemed very "faggy". They were correct. In the 1970s, I didn't dare share my obsession with (male) airline pilots.

Regarding cooking for a crowd: spent a summer working for the Youth Conservation Corps when I was 16. One of my tasks was to help shop and cook meals for 60 people in camps in the mountains of Northern California. There were very specific government issued guidelines and instructions for this. We were under adult supervision, but all you needed to do was be able to read and follow instructions. It was actually hard work. Everyone was going to judge the results after every meal, every day. It was fun. People are hungry (especially teens) and they appreciate it when you do a good job.

The food on these "mission" flights looks far better than the reheated slop served on commercial airlines.

This Air Force FA's job looks challenging at times and I doubt the pay is great. His curiosity, youth, positive attitude, and sense of adventure is so much fun to watch. The long-term benefits and college opportunities will be fabulous if he sticks with it. Perhaps he'll meet a handsome rice queen pilot.

by Anonymousreply 51August 24, 2024 2:02 AM

[quote] The food on these "mission" flights looks far better than the reheated slop served on commercial airlines.

I agree.

At first, I was kind of leery about these amateurs cooking food for a plane full of passengers.

But then I thought about the crap served on commercial airlines, and realized that this food (bought fresh and cooked hot) is much, much better.

by Anonymousreply 52August 24, 2024 3:49 AM

R27 if you think that Singapore has no military bases then you know fuck all about Singapore. Similarly Thailand, Sweden, Brazil, Japan, Australia and India.

Maybe best for you to focus on those fabulous little meals that he pulls together in the galley.

Tell me that you’re American without telling me that you’re American.

This is why we laugh at some of you.

by Anonymousreply 55August 24, 2024 6:44 AM

[quote] if you think that Singapore has no military bases then you know fuck all about Singapore

That should have been clarified to read American bases.

In places with American bases, the crew can stay on base, without having to go to a private hotel.

But in places like Singapore, with NO American bases, the flight mission crew has to stay in a private hotel

by Anonymousreply 56August 24, 2024 8:53 AM

His explanation sounds very mysterious. I wonder if he got in big trouble for making these videos?
