Have you ever had a hot dish?

Common ingredients are tater tots, ground beef, shredded cheese, Campell's soup, frozen vegetables.

Why? Are they any good? Do you make them for yourself or for pot lucks? Did you have them as a kid?

The closest I came to them was tuna noodle casserole.

Tim Walz's recipe has some fresh ingredients and seasoning.

Walz's winning "Turkey Trot Tater-Tot Hotdish" recipe:

:

1 pound of fresh green beans, chopped into bite sized pieces

4 slices of Hormel bacon

1 clove of garlic, finely chopped

6 tablespoons butter

5-6 tablespoons flour

2 ½ cups Whole milk

½ cup half and half

2 teaspoons salt

3 cups Kraft shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 pound Jennie-O ground turkey

½ teaspoon sage

1 teaspoon pepper

1 egg

1 tablespoon olive oil

½ cup green onions

¼ cup chopped onions

1 ½ cup chopped baby bella mushrooms washed and well dried

1 package tater tots

Pre-heat the oven to 375 F.

In a medium bowl, mix turkey, garlic, sage, green onions, egg, pepper and one teaspoon salt.

Using a 10-inch cast iron skillet, heat the olive oil and then cook the turkey to the well-done temperature of 165 F and place in 9-by-13-inch baking dish. (Browning similar as you would for ground beef).

Blanch the green beans by dropping them into boiling water for 2-3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove and plunge them into ice water. Once cool, drain completely and gently mix them in with the turkey in the dish.

Fry the bacon until crispy then chop into ¼-inch pieces. Add bacon into turkey mixture.

Heat 2 tablespoons of butter. As soon as you see that the butter foam has begun to subside, indicating it is hot enough, add the mushrooms. Stir continuously and gently with wooden spoon for 4-5 minutes or for about 2 minutes after browning point. Remove from heat and add to casserole dish.

In a sauce pan, melt remaining butter over medium heat. Little by little, sprinkle flour into the butter. Let cook for 2 minutes, then slowly whisk in the milk and half and half. Cook for 2 more minutes, add diced onions and salt and pepper. After a minute, stir in 2 ½ cups of cheese until melted.

Pour cheese mixture over the ingredients.

Scatter tater tots over the top and remaining cheese.

Bake 45 minutes or until golden brown.

It's a soupluck not a potluck.

Bless their hearts .. those damn Yankees don't know how to make a decent casserole!

Is that ho I think it is?

Tim's version is like a fresh cream of mushioom soup with onions, mushroooms, seasoned ground turkey and green beans. Except for the tater tot topping, it;s very old school Stouffer's. I'd prefer a gratin topping. It would feed a lot of people for not nuch money and most of the ingredients are healthy..

No, but I’m also not from Minnesota, dontcha know.

Tim’s Turkey Taco Tot Hotdish Rep. Tim Walz

- 1 lb ground turkey - 1 large red bell pepper (or two medium ones) - 1 yellow onion - 1 can sliced black olives - 1 can diced mild green chilies - 1 bottle taco sauce (medium) - 1 16 oz sour cream - 1 bag of frozen tots - 4 cups shredded cheddar cheese - 3 cups sweet corn - cherry tomatoes - green onions - shredded iceberg lettuce - paprika - chili powder - onion powder - garlic powder - olive oil

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Dice the onion and bell pepper into 1-inch dice and sauté in 1 tablespoon of olive oil, salt and pepper for 15 minutes, until tender. Remove onion and bell pepper and set aside in a mixing bowl. Brown turkey. In a small bowl, mix 2 teaspoons each of paprika, chili powder, onion powder and garlic powder. Add half of mixture to the turkey while browning. Reserve the other half of mixture to sprinkle over the tots prior to baking. When finished, add the turkey in with the sautéed onion and bell pepper. Add black olives, sweet corn, chilies, taco sauce, 2 cups of cheese, and sour cream. Stir mixture until combined. Pour into a baking dish and sprinkle the remaining 2 cups of cheese on top. Add tots on top of the mixture and cheese. Sprinkle spice mixture on top of tots. Bake in 400 degree oven for 45 minutes or until tots are crispy and golden brown. After removing from the oven, sprinkle with shredded lettuce, green onions and diced tomato. Serve with sour cream, hot sauce, avocado, cilantro or your favorite taco topping.

Sounds like slop.

No, that wasn't in my mom's cooking repertoire. My neighbor across the street, that was a different story. I had some of her casserole with the potato chips on top.

Little Moga-hot-dishu

Inspired by Worthy Pause Samosa Chaatdish Tater Tot Hotdish

Rep. Ilhan Omar

Ingredients

4 medium yellow onions, minced finely

ghee or olive oil

2 T jalapeños, seeded and minced (approximately two medium peppers)

6 medium garlic cloves, minced

4 tsp fresh ginger, minced

2 T garam masala

2 tsp cumin

2 tsp coriander

4 tsp turmeric

1/2 tsp cinnamon

2 lb. ground beef or lamb

1 tsp pepper, to taste

salt, to taste

6 Roma tomatoes, diced

2 T tomato paste

1 package frozen spinach (16 oz)

juice of one lemon

1 cup fresh cilantro, chopped (a large bunch or two)

1 cup frozen peas (optional)

1 package of tater tots

1 cup plain Greek yogurt (optional)

1 cup coriander chutney

Bonus chaat toppings

minced raw onions

sweet tamarind chutney

sev (crunchy Indian chickpea noodle snacks)

a sprinkle of chaat masala

chana masala

Directions 1. Using a big stock pot or Dutch oven, fry onions on medium heat, stirring frequently until they start to caramelize. Then add ghee or oil to the pan and give them a pinch of salt or two and cook until they are a medium golden color. Be patient — this can take a little while but it really lays the groundwork for all the layers of flavor in this dish.

2. Clear a space in the pan, adding more ghee or oil there. Throw in the jalapeño, ginger and garlic and fry for a minute or two until fragrant. Then stir to combine.

3. Add the garam masala, cumin, coriander, turmeric and cinnamon and stir to coat everything. It'll be a dry mixture at this point, but that's normal.

4. You'll probably need to brown the meat in two batches even with a very large pot, so remove about half of this masala-onion mixture and set it aside.

5. Add half the ground meat to the pot, sprinkle with salt/pepper and brown as you combine it thoroughly with the onion mixture. Repeat with the remaining meat and masala-onions.

6. Preheat the oven to 350 F.

7. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste and sprinkle with a little more salt. Simmer on low, covered, about 15-20 minutes or until the tomatoes kind of melt into the stew, stirring occasionally.

8. Stir in the frozen spinach, lemon juice and about half of the chopped cilantro. Turn off the burner.

9. Taste and adjust spices, salt and pepper as needed. Stir in the frozen peas, if desired.

10. Transfer the palak keema into a 13x9 (3-quart) casserole dish. Top with a single layer of tater tots.

11. Bake for 40-50 minutes or until the tots are crispy and golden brown.

12. Serve with the rest of the fresh cilantro, plain yogurt, coriander chutney and whatever other bonus chaat toppings.

I have! A beautiful man from Yemen I met in Brooklyn. Fourth floor walk up in the heat of August. We kissed, spat (he was into it — it was hot), and so on. And after, he showered with me and washed my hair as he did.

If you count scalloped potatoes, they yes, we had that. I remember my mom making it maybe 1X.

"Hot dish" and "hot dish"! What is "hot dish"?

by Anonymousreply 14August 17, 2024 11:38 PM

Minnesota hotdish, also known as tater tot casserole, is a hearty casserole dish that's a main course and typically includes meat, vegetables, starch, cheese, and canned soup. It's often served at gatherings like potlucks, family reunions, and church suppers

Thanks, Google.

Thank you, r15.

It's a topic of discussion because Democratic veep candidate Tim Walz is famous for them.

"Walz won the Minnesota congressional delegation’s hotdish competition for two years in a row when he was in the House of Representatives, first with his recipe for the bratwurst and cheddar-based New Ulm Hotdish in 2013, and then with his Turkey Trot Tater-Tot Hotdish in 2014. He then achieved a hotdish trifecta by winning again in 2016 with a Turkey Taco Tot Hotdish."

He's trying to be folksy with this hot dish thing.

That’s sounds like a little may be good but that’s not something I would ever make myself
