X-Men 97 creator Beau DeMayo was removed from hit series for, ironically, behaving like Bryan Singer

This is behind a paywall but here is the most important part:

I’m told that DeMayo sent nude photos of himself — or at the very least, photos of himself in various states of undress — to several young male staffers. Some of these photos allegedly featured DeMayo wearing superhero costumes and striking sexually suggestive “hero” poses that could be used as “inspiration” for the show. DeMayo was asked to stop sending such photos but I’m told that he persisted nonetheless. “If you were a guy who looked like they could be under 30 on that show [X-Men ’97], you have his nudes whether you wanted them or not.”

This is why they hate us.

Well, he does have a great body, so at least it's not horrifying if you saw the pix.

The Sneider Report also says DeMayo is alleged to have groped a male staffer and otherwise behaved abusively to staff (roid rage, I'm assuming) and that he was let go from The Witcher for similar reasons.

by Anonymousreply 3August 16, 2024 4:57 PM

Meanwhile, he's going down swinging and claiming it's about fanart

R8 ironically is spelled correctly.

What the hell is wrong with you.

Are you autistic or something?

by Anonymousreply 11August 16, 2024 6:47 PM

DeMayo's lawyer, Bryan Freedman, handled cases for Kevin Spacey, Don Lemon, Chris Cuomo and Megyn Kelly. He's ready to fight.

by Anonymousreply 12August 16, 2024 6:49 PM

"Ironical" is also accepted.

There's a poster here (or perhaps more than one--who knows) who likes to point out seemingly incorrect use of the words "ironically" and "literally." Maybe they aspired to be an elementary school teacher and it didn't work out, so they take out their frustration here.

by Anonymousreply 15August 16, 2024 7:09 PM

I'm pretty sure sending unsolicited full on nudes is strong enough of a sexual harassment to get a man fired from anything so I don't understand what his case is.

Especially if it was multiple people yet to a specific type of person that he was sexually attracted to. It's not like he sent them to everyone and can claim it was a joke.

by Anonymousreply 16August 16, 2024 7:15 PM

Geez, why does X-Men attract so many creeps?

by Anonymousreply 17August 16, 2024 7:17 PM

[quote]Geez, why does X-Men attract so many creeps

It's a deeply immature and stunted culture, and of course segments of the entertainment industry have always attracted the worst types (with many, many exceptions, needless to say).

by Anonymousreply 18August 16, 2024 7:20 PM

Superhero stories are fundamentally about the use and abuse of power. Those who are drawn to it are often less inclined to be drawn to the heroics part of it than to the philosophical appeal of power.

The paradox of X-Men has always its pronounced emphasis on victimhood. Powerful beings who identify as victims (exemplified most notoriously by Magneto, who rage at humans stems from surviving the Holocaust.) X-Men can’t take place in the live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe because the mutants who live there (Captain America, Hulk, Spider-Man) are celebrated as heroes by the regular people of that universe. X-Men needs to take place in a world where they are vilified and ostracized. Save the world from an alien invasion and they still hate you.

The overriding theme of De Mayo’s complaining is victimhood. I was fired because I am gay, I am black, and I am a nerd. No, he was fired because he broke rules meant to protect other people from harassment and exploitation. He received WARNINGS before he was fired, and he received an EXTREMELY generous confidentiality terms upon his dismissal, because he was gay and black.

In a similar vein, Justice League actor Ray Fisher was another black man who publicly claimed the mantle of victimhood and accused everyone under the sun of conspiring against him because he was unhappy of how much his screen time was cut down in the theatrical release of that movie. He rendered himself unemployable. If he had simply smiled, shut up and been patient, he would have seen his work eventually be restored with the Snyder cut.

As a Marxist, I try to always look at the material production before me. As R19 posits, since 2001 media culture has been obsessed with fascism in response to our global uncertainties. We've gone from being monster-obsessed, fighting against an Other (remember when zombies were a thing?) to a superhero that kills people but also does no moral harm.

There is a reason why silver age comics like the Rocketeer, The Shadow, Dick Tracy, etc. have not gotten a postmodern Marvel / DC treatment. Hegelianly, white men (and all people, eventually) need to feel powerful and they will do so in a dialectic even through comic books.

That being said if you send nudes to your coworkers, unsolicited, yeah you should be fired no matter how hot your tits are.

by Anonymousreply 20August 16, 2024 9:33 PM

Always ask yourself, what would Prof. X do?

by Anonymousreply 21August 16, 2024 9:34 PM

ironic means unexpected.

so, maybe the poster thinks this is not.

[quote] I'm pretty sure sending unsolicited full on nudes is strong enough of a sexual harassment to get a man fired from anything so I don't understand what his case is.

The article stated the photos were of him in superhero costumes.

by Anonymousreply 23August 16, 2024 10:16 PM

In entertainment reporter Jeff Sneider's report (behind a paywall), he wrote that they were nude and semi-nude photos of himself in hero poses so the artists can use for inspiration.

by Anonymousreply 24August 16, 2024 10:25 PM

I love the X-Men and I really loved the show but his face is repulsive to me. No matter how hot his body is I just can't get over his face.

by Anonymousreply 25August 16, 2024 10:31 PM

R24 yes

It literally says that in the OP

by Anonymousreply 26August 16, 2024 11:03 PM

R26, it uses the word “nude” and then immediately backtracks: “I’m told that DeMayo sent nude photos of himself — or at the very least, photos of himself in various states of undress — to several young male staffers.

There are superheroes who don’t wear shirt and slacks and compared to that, would be in some state of “undress”.

by Anonymousreply 27August 16, 2024 11:08 PM

So to some he sent nudes, to some he sent undressed, it's not difficult to understand, unless you're deliberately trying to dismiss what he did.

On top of which - he doesn't need to remove any clothing at all to demonstrate a pose

by Anonymousreply 28August 16, 2024 11:13 PM

And what the fuck is your point, you goddamn pedantic freak.

De Mayo sent photos his body to young men, he was told to stop and he persisted.

by Anonymousreply 29August 16, 2024 11:14 PM

R29 was for r27

by Anonymousreply 30August 16, 2024 11:14 PM

Animators may use models to help the draw their characters. Notably, Robert Gant was Disney’s Hercules.

However, the idea that the showrunner would need to strip off his own clothes in order to instruct very talented artists how to imagine an animated character is ludicrous.

De Mayo’s own Instagram is closeup after closeup of his own breasts, this is the stuff he was comfortable showing the public. What was he showing his subordinates?

by Anonymousreply 34August 16, 2024 11:49 PM

Not to belabor the point, but this came across my feed just now. This illustrator did all the X-Men as if they were animated by Disney. Animators don’t need real world references to draw everything. They do fine enough making it up in their head. De Mayo could have drawn a stick figure to get his point across.

r44, You’re an idiot. It’s NEVER okay to sexually harass anyone no matter how “good” you look. I do agree that Beau is not a good looking man, at least above the neck.

by Anonymousreply 45August 17, 2024 7:18 PM

statement from demayo's lawyer:

You realize that Disney allowed Beau to have an Only Fans page while working for the company. No clue if someone quit while he was showrunner but that’s like every single day on every single show.

My client never sent lewd videos and photos to his direct reports. That is a bald faced lie and defamatory.

No one who reported Beau to HR received an inappropriate photo or video. That is simply untrue. As a proud gay black man, Disney knew exactly who he was and what he stood up for. That’s why they did not tell him to stop his only fans page. They let him be himself which allowed his creativity to thrive. When they objected to his free speech rights and not complying with illegal NDA’s a certain person over there tried to replace him because he was becoming more successful than other creators.

Ask Disney if his separation agreement illegally silenced him. Let me know what they say.

Don’t print this crap. It’s wrong and defamatory.

by Anonymousreply 52August 21, 2024 11:50 AM

OP it's fucked up to compare him to Singer. Singer is a rapist who took advantage of underaged boys.

No one is accusing Beau of that type of behavior. The allegations basically are that he narcissistically liked to show off his body.

by Anonymousreply 53August 21, 2024 11:58 AM

R19, Spider-Man, Captain America and the Hulk are not mutants.

by Anonymousreply 54August 21, 2024 12:31 PM

R27, "slacks"? Tell me you're an Eldergay without telling me you're an Eldergay.

by Anonymousreply 55August 21, 2024 3:10 PM

Lawyers usually choose their language quite specifically. He stated “ My client never sent lewd videos and photos to his direct reports.“. The use of “direct reports” narrows the field of coworkers to in Beau’s immediate line of reporting. Could it be that pics were sent to other employees who had intermediate supervisors or were laterals?

by Anonymousreply 56August 21, 2024 4:32 PM

For sure r56. The lawyers statement basically admits he sent pictures of himself to people, just makes the distinction that none of those guys were actually his direct reports.

It's certainly inappropriate to send people pics of your body, but honestly I can't get worked up if that is the worst thing he did.

by Anonymousreply 57August 21, 2024 4:40 PM

I worked with a guy just like this- narcissistic to the Nth degree and blaming others when he got in trouble. He and his lawyers are taking it to the edge because they know Disney won’t drag proof to the curb and damage their assets.

The guy I worked with sent nude and semi nude photos to one of the hottest clients in our company that was straight. He knew that this guy would not come to management, it was one of my coworkers that brought it to light. Even then the guy was absolutely unapologetic

When you were sending nude photos or even semi nude photos to somebody that doesn’t want or ask for them, that is harassment- he was able to call it “art”.
