Leg-lengthening goes horribly wrong
[quote]Since 2016, the 49-year-old has had five surgeries and three bone grafts, exhausted her life savings and brought a legal action against her surgeon, which was finally settled in July, with no admission of liability.
[quote]At the age of 25, Elaine came across an article about a Chinese clinic where people were having surgery to make their leg bones longer. The piece contained grisly details of medieval-looking leg cages and rampant infection. It sounded nightmarish but left Elaine intrigued. "I know people will question the vanity of it," she says. "But when you face body dysmorphia, there's no rational explanation for why you feel so overwhelmingly bad."

She must have been around 41 when she started the procedure. That seems like an oddly advanced age for seek the advantages of greater height.
I’d like to make fun of her, but she acknowledges the irrationality of it and the doctor sounds like a dick for blaming the antidepressants. She obviously should have disclosed them, though. Any medical professionals have an opinion on whether they could have affected the outcome?
Maybe a 5’2” peri menopausal woman who is likely weight conscious doesn’t have robust enough bones for a procedure like this. But if that were the case, you’d think it would have been mentioned.

Embrace the shortness, people. Turn it into your strength.

I hope she doesn't get a penny & her legs rot off.

Madonna is only 5’4”, Prince was about the same height, I believe.
Plenty of short, successful people but dysmorphia can blur all reality.

What the fuck, R5? She IS stupid. I feel sorry for her, but she’s lucky to be alive.

Was she rich to start with? Who can afford to take years off work in their 40s for a vanity project like this?

It seems like every month or so, there's a story about some Brit (usually female) going on a medical tourism trip to a place like Turkey or Thailand and something going horribly wrong.

Weird. Women don't tend to think about their height much unless they are super tall. Short women don't get the same shot short men do.

Do you have the surgeon's contact info? Asking for a friend.

Madonna (and Lady Gaga) are both 5'1". Tiny.

Most short people wish they were taller…..having long legs can improve your body proportions and have clothes look better too….but unfortunately we must accept our size….what this woman did is sad and frightening.

I can recommend a good surgeon for this.

I'm very short and thought about doing this, but after reading the gruesome details and extremely long rehabilitation, I decided against it. It's easier just to embrace being short.

My sister is 5' and had a knock out body when young. The straight guys loved her being so tiny. Makes them feel big and macho. She said it also gives her more options as she doesn't have to worry about being taller than a date.
This chick is fucked up.

Yes r21, as a smaller lady, I can attest to some seriously good boning I received due to being petite. Many men do love it.

R21 I would feel like an idiot if I were to have sex with a partner that is half my size. Only straight men, in their passive tendencies, can consider that situation as being dominant. Straight men have everything inverted to fit their egos.

The point is most women don't care R23. If they are tiny and gorgeous they are going to get a large selection of men of all sizes.

Read about a Vietnamese woman who spent her life savings and took her son down the Darien gap because the traffickers on Tiktok made it sound so easy. She lost her son down a ravine. She did her research, too, but presumably not the part that would have told her that she didn't qualify for refugee status and would have been turned away at the border. Heartbreaking story.
Some people make tragically bad choices.

A 41 year old doesn't not rationalize like this: "At 12, I was taller than most girls," she says. "By 14, I was suddenly shorter than everyone. Over time it became an obsession. Taller means better. Taller means more beautiful. I just felt that taller people had more chances." So how tall was she - the article never says. If she was taller at one point, then shorter - she's probably still over 5'.
And her goal was...7cm? Did I get that right? 2.75 inches?
Ever think of high-heel or platform shoes for $100?
She's an obsessive moron. By 41 you usually accept shit. Now for people with TRUE height issues - like dwarves - they've actually done this and it is amazing. But they face TRUE societal discrimination and have a hard time navigating a world meant for people 2 feet taller.

The problem with being short is weight gain…you gain 10 pounds and it looks like 20 on your frame…literally no place for it to hide……taller people can hide weight gain much easier………and yes taller people can be perceived as more beautiful and are more likely to be promoted

I’m 4’10” and can’t find clothes to fit me. Now that I’m retired I wear yoga pants, tee shirts and sneakers. My back feels so much better than when I had to wear “work shoes.” I wish I could’ve worn sneakers to work with an arch support inset.
I stopped going to weddings and nice restaurants years ago because I just have no nice clothes that fit. Some woman was like “But it’s so easy to hem pants! All you do is fold them and sew.”
Honey, you can’t just fold pant hems 7 inches and sew. It doesn’t work that way. They have to be cut and if you have any orthopedic abnormalities (I have scoliosis) you absolutely need a tailor to measure all around the hem precisely, then cut, then sew. The last tailor in my town folded a few years ago. Rents too high.
But I loved being instructed in how hemming is by someone who’s 5’8.”

R29 - that's all well and good when you're in your teens or 20's. But she started when she was 41. Nobody's gonna promote her because she grew 7cm.
