PARIS OLYMPICS OFFICIAL THREAD - Part 6 - The Paris Olympics Is Nearly DEAD To Me: Sad Last Days And Closing Ceremony

Well, it's been a wild ride! From a 'Marmite' Opening Ceremony - you either loved it or you hated it - to two weeks of amazing sporting action in front of packed, enthusiastic crowds in many iconic venues.

There have certainly been some performances that will live in the history books - stunning World Records from the likes of Armand Duplantis and Sydney McLoughlin, and some dominant performances from established champions such as Simone Biles, and breakout stars like Leon Marchand.

The last few days will see the track and field action wrap up - with the climax of the always spicy 4 X 400 relays. Many of the big team sports have their finals - football/soccer, basketball, volleyball and basketball.

Will Karsten Warholm bring our friend, NORWEGIAN, some relief by pulling out a win in the 400m hurdles - one of the most anticiptaed finals on the track?

Team USA will easily top the total number of medals, but are neck and neck with China for biggest gold haul. France and Britain are scrapping like hell to beat each other in both metrics in 4th and 5th places.

There aren't many details of what's planned for the Closing Ceremony, but it will have the more traditional setting of the Stade De France stadium. There are rumours that the organisers are toning down some of the planned spectacles following some of the Trumped-up hysteria that greeted elements of the Opening Ceremony.

Continue to 'oooh!' and 'aaaah!' at the amazing performances and pointlessly bitch at each other about medals tables.

We've certainly enjoyed the eye candy - the jacked, the chiseled, the ripped, the pretty, and the hung - with several breakout new 'DL Faves'.

I'll leave you to 'Czech out' Gold-winning Men's Canoeist, Martin Fuksa

Now I'm not suggesting it's a conspiracy but the Olympic website medal table isn't acknowledging the men's 100m relay bronze which puts Team GB ahead of France. It has KTJ's silver....

by Anonymousreply 1August 9, 2024 7:04 PM

[quote]There’s no relationship between that and the fact that historically the British triumph over the French.

Certainly from my (a British person's) perspective, it's a friendly rivalry with the French and Australians when it comes to the medal table.

The French of course bid for the 2012 games and fully expected to win and were dumbstruck when it was awarded to London. It didn't help that Jacques Chirac insulted British food before the vote, saying it was almost as bad as Finland's cuisine. Finland had 2 votes.

Germany are up to 8th in the table now, after a few golds today.

by Anonymousreply 2August 9, 2024 7:14 PM

Looking forward to the traditional welcome home reception for the U.S. Olympic team at the White House, hosted by President Biden and Vice President Harris.

Trump will probably demand "equal time" and his own event with the athletes.

The medal table has been updated to acknowledge Team GB are ahead of France..... but Japan are now in 4th place having won 2 golds today.

China and USA on the same number of golds, China have a couple of boxing matches today and more tomorrow, USA have more athletic chances and the women's football final.

Could China pip USA?

by Anonymousreply 44August 9, 2024 9:22 PM

I'm not too sad about Warholm not winning gold. He wasn't the favorite anyway, Benjamin was. At least we got silver! We now have 4 medals (we are secured a medal in women's handball) and are now tied with our two worst Olympics the last 20 years. Yay! At least we aren't performing worse than that, lol. We only got 4 bronze medals in 2016, truly abysmal stuff. At least we have one gold medal now. We got to hear our national song being played at least once this Olympics, at least that's something. And as usual; just wait until winter Olympics in 2 years. We will beat you all! Lol.

by Anonymousreply 45August 9, 2024 9:23 PM

[quote]She meets the IOC standard

It's amazing that today the IOC advised there is no real definition of a woman, yet the two male boxers are definitely women.

by Anonymousreply 46August 9, 2024 9:24 PM

He’s a man r41/44. Two separate lab tests that are WADA/CAS approved. An official the world boxing association a separate entity confirmed khelif is a male.

by Anonymousreply 47August 9, 2024 9:27 PM

The IOC standard was having an F on his passport.

by Anonymousreply 48August 9, 2024 9:27 PM

Regarding the question in the last thread: who has won 3 consecutive Olympic gold medals in track and field events? The American shotputter Ryan Crouser accomplished the feat earlier this week.

by Anonymousreply 49August 9, 2024 9:31 PM

The IOC stated the gender tests were flawed without providing anything substantive to refute the results.

“The whole process is flawed,” Adams added. “From the conception of the test, to how the test was shared with us, to how the tests have become public, is so flawed that it’s impossible to engage with it.”

They just state that it’s flawed because they say it’s flawed and they won’t engage with it.

It’s incredible that the IOC accepts wide scale drug testing, which involves actually watching athletes urinate into a specimen bottle, but says that gender testing would too invasive and is unthinkable. They just don’t want to be involved in the issue of men participating in women’s sports.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 50August 9, 2024 9:34 PM

WADA is not relevant here. The WBO did no such thing. In any case: It is an organization with no authority over any event sanctioned by the IOC.

The sole arbiter of the women’s competition is the IOC. The End.

by Anonymousreply 51August 9, 2024 9:34 PM

So what?

I did it four times, and I’m not the only one.

[quote]Regarding the question in the last thread: who has won 3 consecutive Olympic gold medals in track and field events? The American shotputter Ryan Crouser accomplished the feat earlier this week.

Thank you.

The BBC coverage was understandably invested in KTJ getting silver, especially with national heroes and former Olympic champions Denise Lewis and Jessica Ennis in the studio, but Thiem was covered in a "Oh yeah, she won 3 consecutive Olympic golds, she's quite good isn't she" type discussion rather than an Olympic legend who has done something very few women if any have.

by Anonymousreply 54August 9, 2024 9:42 PM

She’s no Ledecky…

by Anonymousreply 55August 9, 2024 9:44 PM

R51 aka trans loon, both labs are wada and cas approved and certified you dolt meaning that both are labs that meet the high standards required by both entities.

She didn’t appeal her suspension for IBA and won’t let IBA release his test results. He has the same DSD that caster semenya has, he’s a biological male. You’re pulling things out of your ass by saying two tests from two different parts of the world were “flawed” done by labs that are used by two of the worlds most powerful sports organizations.

A cheek swab would’ve cleared this up.

Oh and he won’t sue anyone because that would require him to take another generic test in discovery.

by Anonymousreply 56August 9, 2024 9:46 PM

Did the one American girl collapse during the 10,000 M race?

There were 3 but only two finished? That I’m aware of.

by Anonymousreply 57August 9, 2024 9:49 PM

The IOC eliminated generic sex tests in 2000, despite the fact that 84% of female athletes were in favor of keeping them and another 10% said they didn’t care.

by Anonymousreply 58August 9, 2024 9:49 PM

The IBA has no relevance to the IOC. It is a banned group, controlled by Russian mafia.

by Anonymousreply 59August 9, 2024 9:49 PM

Your gaslighting doesn’t work here R59, he’s a man and the IBA sent the IOC a letter confirming it , so IOC had plenty of time to rectify this.

by Anonymousreply 60August 9, 2024 9:53 PM

Again: the IBA was banned, for rampant corruption. You might as well tell us that the Dole pineapple factory in Quito tested her….or the chili plantation owners of Andhra Pradesh “certified” her sex.

Bye!

by Anonymousreply 61August 9, 2024 9:59 PM

Perhaps Congress needs to step in to legislate that the U.S. can investigate cases of athletes fraudulently competing against athletes of the opposite sex, the same as the U.S. can go after international doping cases. It would be nice to have before 2028.

by Anonymousreply 62August 9, 2024 10:00 PM

[quote]The IOC has tried to navigate the tightrope between fairness and safety on one side and inclusion on the other, without ever appearing entirely convincing. On Thursday it praised Hubbard’s “courage and tenacity”, with the IOC’s medical and science director, Dr Richard Budgett, saying “everyone agrees that trans women are women”.

It’s as if the male dominated IOC are happy for males who would achieve nothing in male sport to compete in women’s sport.

Hubbard was a male aged mid 40s competing against females mostly in their early 20s.

by Anonymousreply 63August 9, 2024 10:07 PM

R61 can you say what corruption they were banned for dear. Because that’s all you keep spouting. You think the IOC is on the up and and up? They’ve had their own problems with boxing for 40 years. They’re lost credibility on this. You now have spokespeople saying they don’t know what a woman is.

The same talking points were made about Caster Semenya and lo and behold he turned out to be a man.

by Anonymousreply 65August 9, 2024 10:56 PM

For the lazy arse at R64. Do know that the IBA was dumped before the Tokyo Games. The 2024 Paris Games used the same protocol as Tokyo. But anyone who could be bothered to read, or use a search engine , would know that. What’s your excuse?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 66August 9, 2024 11:20 PM

Nitwit at R66, the head of the IOC is now saying there’s no scientific way to determine who is a woman. They’ve lost all credibility. What’s your excuse.

What’s next you’re going to show him wearing pink as a child and say “look he’s a girl he’s wearing pink”.

Now tells us why Mr. Algeria didn’t appeal his suspensions nor challenge the results of the tests. Also interesting that he won’t allow IBC to release the results of his tests. I can’t wait to see your word jumbling on how two independent labs who have nothing to do with IBO and are not affiliated with each other came to the same conclusion that he was a biological male.

by Anonymousreply 67August 9, 2024 11:31 PM

Can’t wait for it to end!

by Anonymousreply 72August 9, 2024 11:52 PM

R6& is the trans loon. Khelifs signature is on the paper informing him of the result. He’s a man. The IOC never questioned the credibility of the lab results. You probably still think Caster is a woman.

No go dilate and rub the lotion on your skin.

R110 China is expected to win the gold in the Men's 10M Platform Diving event.

by Anonymousreply 118August 10, 2024 6:56 AM

R110 US have got finals in both men's and women's basketball (both against France), the women's football, are likely to get gold in at least one of the 4 X 400 relays and have a good chance in the Men's 5,000m with Grant Fisher.

In addition to the men's diving, China are in the final of the women's table tennis.

There are a lot of sports to be concluded where they're still in the early rounds so it's hard to judge at the moment.

On balance, I think it's pretty likely that the US will end up with most golds

Post war it's only London, Rio and Toyko that GB got more than 20 golds, yet "only" 14 golds at this stage feels like a disappointment.

Currently on 57 medals in total, the record set at Rio was 67, which with cycling, athletics and pentathlon could be equaled.

But still this has been a great Olympics.

Raygun and Australia did a disservice to Breaking and its debut by making it a joke. The top four were quite skilled, but it’s Raygun who will be remembered. My criticism of the even is more aimed at the broadcasters who couldn’t seem to bother to explain how it’s judged and the hierarchy of moves and scores. The skateboarding and BMX announcers did a much better job by comparison. Breaking was entertaining to me but a mystery to why the gold medalist was necessarily better than the silver medalist.

I’d like to see ballroom dancing as an event!

I haven't seen much written about it but there really has been a visible rise in the number of British Asians doing well in British sport where traditionally they would compete in cricket or boxing. The Underwood brothers both played rugby for England and their mother was a regular in the stands but they were never treated as anything but English.

In football I can only think of two British Indian players and there have been countless articles written about the lack of diversity, but in Olympic wide sports there is Sam Quek, Joe Choong, Sky Brown, Alex Yee, Louie Hinchliffe, Jake Jarman and of course Emma Raducanu.

And now Kyle Kothari! Go Kyle!

Yeah, winning a grand slam is considered a great success by sporting enthusiasts. Winning a grand slam as a qualifier is even more impressive.

by Anonymousreply 130August 10, 2024 11:34 AM

[quote]With literally nothing to show for it since then. How’d she do at the Olympics?

She's 21 years old and has had multiple injuries requiring surgery since winning the US Open as a qualifier at the age of 18, the first British woman to win a grand slam since 1977.

She was scheduled to play mixed doubles at the Olympics with Andy Murray but withdrew because of injury.

Not sure what your beef with her is but she achieved a massive sporting win and is one of many British Asians excelling in sport in recent years.

by Anonymousreply 131August 10, 2024 11:48 AM

Hey—you listed her as some kind of hero. I’m here to puncture the balloon. You should get that, you Brits are legendary at “hammering the nail the sticks up” as the Japanese say.

Let’s be fair: clearly she has not lived up to her first impression, not by any stretch of the imagination. Nor will she ever …the world has passed her by.

Again, she won a grand slam as a qualifier at the age of 18. The idea that her career is over at the age of 21 is total fantasy, especially when there aren't players dominating the tour with consistent levels of success, except for Świątek at the French.

Gymnastics is back in the news as the Court of Arbitration has determined that Jordan Chiles is not the rightful winner of the Bronze medal on floor. After an investigation, the Court of Arbitration states that Chiles' inquiry, resulting in giving her a .1 increase to her score, bumping her from fifth to third, came too late. Inquiries are to be filed no longer than 1 minute after the original score is shown, Chiles' coaches did not file within the required time frame.

Thus the Court determines that Ana Barbosu is the rightful Bronze Medalist and that.ir should be restored to her. However, the Court has left it to the FIG to determine how/if they want to handle it.

My guess is they won't strip Chiles of her medal. At most, they'll award a second Bronze to Barbosu. They might even issue a third to Barbosus teammate Simona.

by Anonymousreply 194August 10, 2024 6:19 PM

Jordan Chiles might have to return bronze medal after CAS ruling:

by Anonymousreply 200August 10, 2024 6:27 PM

Im not much of a Jordan Chiles fan and thought Babrosu should and Simona should have placed higher then her.... but damn to lose the medal because you filed a few seconds too late. That's terrible.

by Anonymousreply 201August 10, 2024 6:28 PM

Jordan Chiles must be the most devastated gold medalist at these Olympics. To go from not being able to compete in the AA by a few tenths of a point to now having to give back the only individual medal she’s ever won.

by Anonymousreply 202August 10, 2024 6:30 PM

R202, she won't have to give it back though. There's no way they'll ask her to. Romania, during the CAS hearing asked for Chiles to keep hers and have 2 more awarded to the Romanian athletes.

What a shit show that floor final.eas though. There are three different "Rightful" Bronze medalists depending on how you look at it.

If you follow all the FIG rules, Barbosu is the rightful winner.

If you allow the inquiry Chiles is the rightful winner.

If the judges had judged properly and not taken deductions they shouldn't have, Voineau is the rightful winner of Bronze.

Seeing as Team GB aren't going to win more golds than Australia or Japan and unlikely to match France I'm a late convert to the "total medals not most golds" argument.

[quote][R244] will take a while to realize that’s a meaningless stat, since there are a lot more medals available compared to Rio, and there’s no Russian team. Silly rabbit.

You can only win against the athletes in front of you in the competitions that are open.

The dirty cheating Russians aren't in Paris thankfully. Their medals won in previous Olympics should be redistributed.

Hasanboy DUSMATOV, Abdumalik KHALOKOV, Asadkhuja MUYDINKHUJAEV and Lazizbek MULLOJONOV all won in their weigh categories.

Diyora KELDIYOROVA won gold in Judo, Ulugbek RASHITOV won gold in Taekwondo, and Razambek Salambekovitch JAMALOV won gold in wrestling.

Gabby Thomas must be the luckiest athlete at this Olympics basically being handed 3 gold medals on a silver platter. Shericka Jackson pulling out of the 200m made it possible for her to win gold there, then Sha’Carri Richardson saved the US team in the 4x100m relay, and finally Sydney McLaughlin helped her win another gold in the 4x400m relay.

by Anonymousreply 307August 10, 2024 11:41 PM

"The greedy American high jumper was the one that refused to share the gold medal and ended up losing."

The reports are mixed on which jumper requested the jump off. I think they both need to agree not to jump off to share the gold. There was an article; I'll try to find it.

Women's VB has a chance to win gold tomorrow and could tie China. There's other medal events tomorrow too, but I don't know USA's or China's chances at gold.

by Anonymousreply 308August 10, 2024 11:49 PM

It's being reported by "sources," that USAG and Romania have agreed to share the Bronze Medal for the Women's Floor Event Final. IOC and FIG said no and ahve asked Jordan to return her medal.

I believe this is something the FIG would do because they've proven to be stupid, but I can't imagine the IOC would actually agree to this. They've had athletes share medals before after a mistake has been made.

by Anonymousreply 314August 11, 2024 12:03 AM

That's fantastic by France. A big part of host nations doing so well is that they get a guaranteed entry in every event that they can/want to have an entrant. So generally more opportunities, but they still have to go out and win the medals. USA haul in LA could be massive.

Paris was pretty good for using existing venues rather than building new, but what the Olympics should be doing is awarding the Olympics only to cities that have all the necessary venues already, without the the need to build any new ones for the games. It's ridiculous how previous cities have left Olympic venues built specifically for the games then rot afterward. If a city doesn't have the venues, it shouldn't be in the competition.

Teams that are as deep as the USA never run their full finals relay teams in the heats.

"The convention used by the IOC is to sort by the number of gold medals the athletes from a country have earned. In the event of a tie in the number of gold medals, the number of silver medals is taken into consideration, and then the number of bronze medals. If two countries have an equal number of gold, silver, and bronze medals, they are ordered in the table alphabetically by their IOC country code."

[quote]American gymnast Jordan Chiles must return bronze medal after court mandates score change, IOC says. PARIS (AP) — American gymnast Jordan Chiles must return the bronze medal she won in the Paris Olympics floor exercise after sport's highest court said her score was judged improperly, the International Olympic Committee confirmed Sunday.

[quote]The IOC announced early Sunday it was reallocating the bronze from Monday's women's floor final to Romanian Ana Barbosu after the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said Saturday night it would respect the court's decision and elevate Barbosu to third.

[quote]The decision came less than 24 hours after the Court of Arbitration for Sport voided a scoring appeal made by Team USA coach Cecile Landi during the competition that had vaulted Chiles onto the podium.

[quote]CAS ruled Saturday that the on-floor appeal by Landi to have 0.1 added to Chiles’ score came outside the 1-minute window allowed by the FIG.

Wow they must really hate her. They don't usually request the medal back unless it's for dopong. Standard procedure is to must award an additional medal.

I watched the Women's 4x400 relay, and it was just ridiculous.

The US women had such a HUGE lead over all the other teams.

WTF???

None of those other teams even came close!

It was embarrassing for those other teams.

The Dutch came in second place, and they were so far behind.

The Americans were four seconds ahead of the second place team, according to the announcers.

Why do the other countries even bother to compete???

LOSERS.

Back to the women's 4 x 400m relay - the USA came within 0.1 seconds of taking the world record that was set by Russia in Seoul in 1988.

None of the women have been banned for doping but then neither was Florence Foster Griffith Henderson Joyner (RIP) who still has the world record for 100m and 200m

The 400m and 800m world records for women were also set in the 1980s, as was the long jump, shot put and discus. And Jackie Joyner Kersee's heptathlon world record was set in Seoul and there was no suggestion she was nothing but a truly exceptional athlete.

What was in the water back then?

Lavreysen got bronze in Tokyo where Kenny won his final gold in the Keirin.

There are 3 golds at play for the USA - the women's omnium, volleyball and basketball.

Team GB's Emily Campbell got a bronze in the women's weightlifting so GB finishes on 64 medals. The same as Tokyo, one less than London and three less from Rio, their best ever haul.

Now, they just need to go and win that basketball final and everyone - apart from a billion odd Chinese and their allies - will be happy!

Question for people who know running. With differences of only fractions of seconds, why do so many runners seam to load up with loose jewellery, sunglasses, long hair styles, and extra accoutrements? Why not only run in what is the bare minimum requirement (shoes, outfit and number/name tag)? You’d think the extra weight and resistance of all that stuff even if slight would potentially be a factor at such tight parameters. You don’t see swimmers for instance wearing extra stuff because it would drag them. Genuine question.

by Anonymousreply 420August 11, 2024 12:42 PM

Not to detract from the closing ceremony, but can anyone explain what’s going on with that “ A Human A**hole” thread? Someone’s gone off the bend this morning, or is trying to win a gold medal in a new form of breaking bad.

Where’s Muriel?

by Anonymousreply 421August 11, 2024 12:42 PM

Yeah, I always think that -- some of the massive 'dos of the women sprinters and the bling - that's got to add on a pound or two in weight. You would have thought that would make a difference when races come down to thousandths of a second.

by Anonymousreply 422August 11, 2024 12:44 PM

R420 moving through air and water are two completely different things. Density, resistance and all that.

The French 100m hurdler came second by a hundredth of a second and her dreads were flying all over the place behind her.

The American and Jamaican women sprinters tend to have weaves or hair extensions, not dreads.

by Anonymousreply 426August 11, 2024 12:56 PM

Big-mouth Noah Lyles should take some responsibility for that relay debacle - apparently happy and healthy enough to run his individual event with "Covid", but not to help out his relay brothers...

by Anonymousreply 427August 11, 2024 12:59 PM

R423 I get dynamics would be more of a factor in water, but I’m surprised carrying extra unnecessary weight and essentially pulling long streamers behind your head play no factor in diminishing speed when hundredths and thousandths matter. I’m not a scientist, so my assumptions may be wrong.

R425 Definitely, the two relay cockups cost the USA a clear victory in the gold medal table. A tie at best now. Carl Lewis really went off about it.

by Anonymousreply 435August 11, 2024 2:37 PM

If it's show from behind the 3-point line (the arc on either side of the court), it's a three-pointer. Otherwise, it's worth two.

When a player is fouled, they shoot free throws from the free throw line which are worth one point. (They shoot one, two, or three free throws depending on the circumstances.)

by Anonymousreply 436August 11, 2024 2:44 PM

End of the 3rd, US up by 2.

Whatever the final result, a thrilling end to the Games.

by Anonymousreply 437August 11, 2024 2:48 PM

by Anonymousreply 439August 11, 2024 2:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 440August 11, 2024 2:59 PM

[quote]can they score more than 3 of the player is behind the half way line or in their own arc?

No, a three-pointer is the maximum.

A player could score four points, if they shoot a three-pointer, make it, but were also fouled on the shot. They would then also get to shoot one free throw. If they make the free throw, then they had a four-point play. That's the only way to score more than three.

In the end, I think everyone goes away pretty happy with their Games

USA end up on top of the pile - any way you prefer to slice it

China push them all the way.

Great performances by Japan, Australia and the Netherlands, all punching above their weight.

Hosts France will be delighted with a Top 5 finish - their first since London '48, with many gold medals in events they care about (volleyball, rugby, judo) and a breakout global superstar in Leon Marchand.

Great Britain maintain their level from the past 4 Olympics when many expected a drop off over time post 2012.

A great Games overall - magnificent and packed out venues; generous and enthusiastic crowds; and great organisation - very few glitches; with the triathlon and marathon swims going off without the health concerns so many of the press were salivating over before the Games.

Now on to the Closing Ceremony where everyone can finally relax and let their hair down!

That’s an interesting way of putting things, R505.

by Anonymousreply 515August 11, 2024 7:24 PM

Is Nick Meade gay?

It's so ridiculous making them answer questions in that very LOUD stadium.

by Anonymousreply 516August 11, 2024 7:25 PM

Mayor Bass will be there for the torch to be passed when she should be in LA working on the homeless solution. There will be no visible homeless when the Games come to LA but there will likely be another Mayor.

by Anonymousreply 517August 11, 2024 7:25 PM

I’d rather have the rower who couldn’t stop crying.

by Anonymousreply 519August 11, 2024 7:26 PM

I prefer the crybaby swimmer.

It should have been Katy Ledykey and Caeleb Dressel carrying the flag.

by Anonymousreply 520August 11, 2024 7:26 PM

Yes, r217, of course it sucks how the homeless are treaterd, but the mayor of the host city has to be there. Can't blame her

by Anonymousreply 527August 11, 2024 7:31 PM

Jimmy Fallon sounds so fake.

He's putting on this "Mr. Nice Guy" act in his commentary with Mike Terico, but I'm not buying it.

He's a Mean Girl in real life.

by Anonymousreply 528August 11, 2024 7:31 PM

That is their job, R526.

They need to fill the dead air.

by Anonymousreply 529August 11, 2024 7:32 PM

R477 the lack of brains there in Miami should be your first clue…

I love Botswana a bit more for their incredible efforts in track and filed.

by Anonymousreply 534August 11, 2024 7:37 PM

R497 because it is not in the stadium, and it’s not an actual flame. Appropriate for this occasion.

by Anonymousreply 541August 11, 2024 7:43 PM

They should have all the gold medallists come in to the stadium together, so commentators and camera people can focus on them, then separately the silver medallists, then the bronze medallists. Basically a talent agency casting call, and the television presenters could actually be prepared to comment on each of their country's medallists ... right now its just a big shit show.

by Anonymousreply 542August 11, 2024 7:43 PM

It’s interesting that R506 said it was peaceful.

Given the performers who are schedule to perform in a bit for the LA exchange it’s gonna be a world of difference.

Peaceful, serene, historical locations exchanged for loud, raucous modern vibes.

by Anonymousreply 543August 11, 2024 7:44 PM

Por sad Katey—not much fun standing around in your new make up look.

"We are the Champions" is an odd choice to play at the Olympics, especially when a majority of the athletes came away as losers.

Lol.

by Anonymousreply 556August 11, 2024 7:55 PM

Obviously, only Team USA should be singing We Are The Champions, given the circumstances.

by Anonymousreply 557August 11, 2024 7:56 PM

[quote]This early random 90s Eurobanger "Free From Desire" has been everywhere this summer.

It's an ever present at sporting events in the same way Sweet Caroline is.

I'd have preferred Gina G's Oooh Aaah Just A Little Bit as a sporting anthem, if a song from that era and genre was needed.

by Anonymousreply 558August 11, 2024 7:57 PM

I want that medal tray.

Please 🥹

by Anonymousreply 559August 11, 2024 7:58 PM

Well, R556, I choose to see it as if you actually got to participate in the fucking OLYMPICS, you are already a winner.

It’s incredible difficult to qualify to be there. The best athletes in the ENTIRE world for each country.

It’s amazing!!

by Anonymousreply 560August 11, 2024 8:01 PM

I've just had a flashback to the 2012 closing ceremony when Jessie J appeared and performed Price Tag.

Jessie J! Whatever happened to her?

by Anonymousreply 561August 11, 2024 8:04 PM

R561 She's currently in the Bargain Bin!

by Anonymousreply 562August 11, 2024 8:06 PM

I know I'm going to hate the Los Angeles portion coming up.

by Anonymousreply 563August 11, 2024 8:07 PM

Are we going to jump to a "Part 7" thread?

Or are we migrating to that "Olympics Closing Ceremony" thread, when this one is full?

If we're doing a Part 7, can someone please make one!

by Anonymousreply 564August 11, 2024 8:07 PM

R599 there’s a big stink about that tray and how LVMH snuck it into the proceedings. Unlike the World Cup, etc., the IOC has—or had—strict rules about any commercial uses inside an event.

It's such a boring waste of time.

by Anonymousreply 575August 11, 2024 8:15 PM

It's about a dystopian future where there are no Olympics, and this show is about bringing them back from extinction.

" Miami is 3rd world.

It's also very hot and humid.

Athletes would drop from heat exhaustion.

Los Angeles is good because it's a Mediterranean climate."

I think it's the heat more than any "Third World" aspect, but I don't know. I don't think the IOC is willing to push back the dates for the weather (e.g., October) like FIFA did for Qatar hosting the World Cup in November-December of 2022. Atlanta obviously isn't as hot as Miami, but still can get pretty hot in the summer and it hosted. Has Miami bid? I will say the crowds would probably be a lot of fun in Miami.

by Anonymousreply 587August 11, 2024 8:25 PM

"The LA Olympics Committee Chair (Wasserman) just said that in 2028, Track and Field will be held during the first week, and swimming will be held the second week.

That's the reversal of how it's always been done.

I wonder why they made that change?"

I prefer track second week, but it's no big deal. They're doing it that way in LA because they're using So-Fi stadium for swimming - putting a swimming pool in a football stadium like they did for US Trials in Indianapolis this year, so they can have massive seating. Since they're using So-Fi for opening ceremonies, they need time to convert it and put in the main pool, warm-up pool, deck, etc. They wouldn't have time to do it if swimming was in its normal place on the schedule.
