Chappell Roan, the lesbian pop singer who is taking gen Z by storm

I doubt she's if she's caught on with older millennials or the vast majority of gen X, but gen Z absolutely fucking loves her. She likes to dress up hyper glam, drag queen style (very Divine-esque) and owes much of her style to gay culture. The music has a throwback feel to it and a lot of it is very catchy and fun. In interviews, she seems like a sweet, normal midwestern girl. Given her age and fanbase, I am sort of surprised that she hasn't acquiesced to the dominant culture and refuted her self-classification as a lesbian. What do we think, DL?

I really like her and her music. She has an 80s vibe.

by Anonymousreply 2August 9, 2024 4:34 AM

I'm GenX OP and I love her music! It's nice to have an alternative to Tyler Swift. She's been going at it for 10 years and writes her own music. If you like pop music and the muppets, you'll love Chappell.

by Anonymousreply 3August 9, 2024 4:59 AM

Count me in as another Gen X fan!! What’s not to love?

by Anonymousreply 4August 9, 2024 5:08 AM

Against, all odds I've become a fan.

She reminds me of peak Gaga. But more relatable.

by Anonymousreply 5August 9, 2024 5:08 AM

Yeah that Tyler Swift...man she's all over the place lately.

by Anonymousreply 6August 9, 2024 5:36 AM

What? Lesbian til graduation?

by Anonymousreply 7August 9, 2024 6:03 AM

I hate to say it, but DL missed the boat on this one. She's got SIX concurrent Hot 100 singles, and we have barely discussed her here.

by Anonymousreply 8August 9, 2024 6:27 AM

It's because it's all happening on Tiktok.

by Anonymousreply 9August 9, 2024 6:32 AM

Meh. Interest in her music must be one of those things that skips a generation.

by Anonymousreply 10August 9, 2024 6:34 AM
It's because it's all happening on Tiktok.

Watching her desperately trying to get everyone to do her "dance" for her song Hot to Go was a turnoff. The only okay part of the song is the chorus.

by Anonymousreply 11August 9, 2024 6:45 AM

It's their turn, r10. Welcome to being over 35.

by Anonymousreply 12August 9, 2024 6:45 AM

True, R12. And I don't begrudge them for having their moment in the sun. But her music is not my thing.

Meaning she sold 2 copies.

by Anonymousreply 14August 9, 2024 6:57 AM

People sure love crap.

by Anonymousreply 15August 9, 2024 6:58 AM

You were saying, r14? I know we like to shit on the kiddos here, but she is getting plays and crowds outside of our anecdotal world.

R19 You mean this Taylor Swift outfit:

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 23August 9, 2024 8:55 AM

That's not Taylor Swift, r23, and Taylor Swift doesn't dress in male drag. But, in case you weren't aware, drag queens are female impersonators, or caricature versions of women at least. They are the ones trying to dress as women, not the other way around.

by Anonymousreply 24August 9, 2024 11:18 AM

R24 “caricature versions of women…”

I’ll just leave that here…

by Anonymousreply 26August 9, 2024 4:02 PM

I tried to watch one of her music videos. It’s been done before and better. I get why gen z might be enthralled but it’s a pass for me.

by Anonymousreply 27August 9, 2024 5:51 PM

Just a fad

by Anonymousreply 28August 9, 2024 7:03 PM

Like most artists who hit it big like this, Chappell clearly had a makeover that catapulted her—the stuff she was putting out before was very different, though some of those songs (like "California") made it to her debut album. The drag queen branding though is what I think caught people's attention; that, and the songs got a lot poppier. Lana Del Rey did the same thing. She was playing guitar and singing for years in New York making weird indie rock/quasi-folk music before Interscope swooped in and she got her "ghetto Lolita" rebranding.

by Anonymousreply 32August 10, 2024 2:52 PM

She's doing Gottmik with the white face make up. "Good Luck, Babe!" is in the Top Ten. It's not really my thing, etc but I think I get the appeal. It looks a lot less packaged than, idk Katy Perry of 10 years ago. People love her coming out of nowhere, the "skyrocket to fame" angle. I even saw a couple of people on TikTok rather gently compare it to the rise of Nirvana years ago. What? But maybe it does represent a bit of a style shift. A little bit messier, a little bit drag. The songs are good. She has a strong voice. She doesn't sound like Kate Bush or Elizabeth Fraser/Cocteau Twins but it's like a pop star mined a touch of that energy and flipped it for a new time period. So it feels fresh. That could be too high praise! Or maybe people are bored of Taylor!

by Anonymousreply 33August 10, 2024 3:40 PM

Gen Z thinks something about her rise is very organic and muy authentico.

by Anonymousreply 34August 10, 2024 4:17 PM

I'm Gen X and had never heard of her before this past weekend. I saw numerous references to Chappell Roan at Chicago Market Days and had no idea who she is. "If your name is Chappell Roan, you drink free!" is one Market Days mention I recall seeing at a food booth. Made me feel old, like I was out of the loop on a gay cultural phenomenon. If the comments upthread about her being a TikTok sensation are true, then I'm going to feel completely redeemed. I don't use TikTok and have zero plans to start doing so, but if she's as talented as reported, I'm sure we'll all catch her soon enough on other media.

Later, when my Billie Eilish-obsessed gay nephew came by, I asked him about Roan, and he was a fan as well. He showed me her video, and I was expecting another Billie Eilish but was pleasantly surprised that she's the complete opposite. Thank the universe, because I cannot stand Eilish!

I haven’t followed Ms. Roan closely, but I don’t understand people claiming her style is like Divine’s.

Divine looked like she lived in a roach motel, dined off garbage from a KFC dumpster, and had never washed her wig…. whereas this girl is CLEAN.

by Anonymousreply 59September 14, 2024 1:28 AM

She's kind of short.. She's here on talent. A part of me likes her and gets it. IDK she's warning photographers and complaining about the attention. I mean, I get that too. It's a bit like Simone Biles speaking out for her own mental health...which we support. But you're a pop star now, hun. This VMA performance isn't rocket science. It's ok to give people what they want. Am I super jaded? You're giving a speech about inspiring midwest queers but the premise of this performance is you're Joan of Arc in a world of men? Try to enjoy yourself on the road up, girl. My 20 year old self definitely likes that she's prepared to a check a paparazzi.

She's a bitchy little diva. Cancelled two shows in the UK so she could perform at the VMAs and then yelled at her fans online when they questioned her.

She also has major major weight problems. Is naturally plump but has dropped 45lbs almost overnight. Has those heavy legs that no amount of dieting will shift.

by Anonymousreply 63September 14, 2024 5:39 PM

Of course not. She's pro palestine. And she might be angry the Harris/Walz campaign lifted her hat idea.

by Anonymousreply 66September 21, 2024 6:51 PM

CR did an interview with the Guardian and told them she'd just been diagnosed with severe depression. She's too sensitive and spazzy to be a succesful touring artist. You need a robust constitution or you just end up cancelling everything like Bieber, Zayn and Mendes.

'She is coping “how anyone would”, she says pragmatically. “I’m in therapy twice a week. I went to a psychiatrist last week because I was like, I don’t know what’s going on. She diagnosed me with severe depression – which I didn’t think I had because I’m not actually sad. But I have every symptom of someone who’s severely depressed.” The brain fog, forgetfulness, poor focus and “a very lacklustre viewpoint” all clicked into place when she heard the diagnosis.'

I like this quote from the Guardian article
I encourage people to use your critical thinking skills, use your vote – vote small, vote for what’s going on in your city

A lot of people might find more relevance and interest in politics if they paid attention to city and state leadership.

by Anonymousreply 69September 23, 2024 2:06 PM

by Anonymousreply 70September 23, 2024 2:08 PM

I like her music, but she sounds insufferable in interviews.

by Anonymousreply 71September 23, 2024 3:32 PM

Yeah, the Gaga comparisons need to stop. Gaga was a BLAST in interviews when she first hit big. Funny, weird, driven, focused.

I really like Roan's music and onstage persona. But she is just too Gen Z for me, I guess. Whining already.

by Anonymousreply 79September 23, 2024 7:43 PM

From the Guardian article at R68:
And, in June, while dressed as Lady Liberty, Roan told the crowd at Governor’s Ball festival in New York that she had declined an invitation to perform at a White House Pride event: “We want liberty, justice and freedom for all. When you do that, that’s when I’ll come.”

My take: It's one thing for Chappell Roan to choose not to endorse Kamala Harris. Roan is very new to being a public figure, and she admits the transition has been rough in many ways including the depression diagnosis. Throwing her hat into the political endorsement arena may be a straw that breaks the camel's back, and probably not necessary anyway since I'd bet her fans heavily, heavily skew in favor of Harris already.

However, it's quite another thing to have the attitude she expresses in the above quote. "When [bold]you[/bold] do that...?" Given the very plausible repressed upbringing she describes, she is one person who should understand that it's not for [bold]anyone[/bold] to just sit back and expect others -- even elected leaders -- to grant and uphold people's rights. Rights have to be fought for, defended, and upheld by all of us. You know when we see progress? When elected officials feel the weight of intense public pressure to act. Roan might want to read up on a few touchpoints not too far back in history like Stonewall, the 80s HIV/AIDS crisis, the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment, the rise and fall of Roe v. Wade, and the Civil Rights Movement to get an idea of how these things actually work.

I say all this as someone who likes her songs I've heard and is willing to cut her a lot of slack as she continues adjusting to life as a public person. Good for her, repudiating shitty behavior by industry assholes in real-time. We have a terrible way of commoditizing celebrities and blurring the lines of what is public and private in their lives. But the above attitude of, "Make things perfect, then I'm all in," is lazy, entitled, irresponsible, and counter to our deep American tradition of fighting for rights toward making a "more perfect union." Roan can, needs to, and must do better on issues like this one.

by Anonymousreply 80September 23, 2024 9:20 PM

She complains about the downside of fame, she claims the Dems don't protect Trans enough so she can't give her support to either party, she cancels shows so she can appear on the AMAs.

This woman is blowing up her image and career FAST.

For someone just getting to know her, she has completely turned me off. I don't need some 25 year old scold telling everyone else how to behave.

Does she have any idea how awful she's been coming across?

by Anonymousreply 81September 23, 2024 9:25 PM

r81 Not AMAs... but rather the equally irrelevant VMAs.

by Anonymousreply 82September 23, 2024 9:29 PM

Another teachable moment for Roan, from the Guardian piece:
The change she wants to see in the US in this election year, she says instantly, is “trans rights. [bold]They cannot have cis people making decisions for trans people, period.[/bold]”

Period? Your advocacy is admirable, but settle in, Chappell. It's going to be this way for a long while to come, until there's a majority coalition of openly trans elected leaders in state and federal offices. Hope springs eternal, but also prepare yourself for the very real possibility that you'll not see this happen during your lifetime. Because for women, gay/lesbian, and people of color -- all demographic groups that are much longer in community awareness-building and the fight for equality -- we still have terribly small minorities compared to cis, straight-identifying white men in Congress and throughout state offices. We're 248 years into our nation's founding, and we still haven't even elected a cis straight female president, though that seems about to FINALLY change in several weeks. 💙

If you feel this passionately about trans' rights, then consider putting your public influence to work and start organizing and endorsing trans candidates for office. Be prepared to be relentless, because the opposition will be overwhelming, aggressive, unending, and very, very ugly.

by Anonymousreply 84September 23, 2024 9:59 PM

Yes, r83, the Trans Agenda has so successfully developed and nurtured a cis/trans binary as if they are two equally weighted realities that impressionable cement heads like Chappell Roan and all the gay "allies" to the Gender Identity Movement believe that such thinking is of course the only way to be a "progressive".

Pure nonsense!

Screw this trick. She wants fame but none of the things actually associated with it. She can go stick to playing midwest county fairs then.

by Anonymousreply 88September 24, 2024 9:43 AM

She's an idiot.

Like most of Gen Z, she is whiny petulant brat but everybody is kissing her ass and telling her how stunning and brave she is.

by Anonymousreply 89September 24, 2024 3:05 PM

What's worse is that she put trans rights above young women's rights? Above voting? Above LGBTQ protections? Above gay marriage?

I'm going to put another group that I'm not a part of above everything else!

And the bullshit about how non-trans shouldn't be in charge of trans people's rights. GIRL - LOOK AROUND - Men have been telling and legislating what women can do for thousands of years!

I hate this woman - she'a a pain in the ass. All the 'abuse' she's getting from fans - which she won't go into detail about. Supposedly calling her by her real name is an offense.

Careers have been killed for far less. At least Sinead O'Connor was fighting over abuse - that we all knew was happening and now in hindsight we realize how terribly she was treated. But her career was canceled FAST.

by Anonymousreply 90September 24, 2024 4:21 PM

She will have another year or two and then the newest girl phenom will get the spotlight. She'll be back performing at the county fair sooner rather than later.

by Anonymousreply 91September 24, 2024 4:38 PM

I don't really believe she's a lesbian, to be honest. She dated quite a few men - then was in a relationship with a woman, which she promoted so heavily.

No longer with her - and I feel like that was a stop-over point that many young women do before they most solidly go for dick but then call themselves bi-sexual for the rest of their lives.

She said dating men was so hard and disappointing. “People say I’m jealous, but my kink is watching you ruin your life, you losing your mind, you dyeing your hair,” Chappell belts. At Coachella last April, she looked into the livestream camera and had a message for this ex. “Bitch I know you’re watching,” she said, “and all those horrible things happening to you are karma. It’s me!”

Sounds like dating a woman wasn't all that either. At this point - can you really take anything she says seriously?

by Anonymousreply 92September 24, 2024 5:39 PM

Labelling oneself as a "lesbian pop singer" is so cutting edge.

by Anonymousreply 93September 24, 2024 5:47 PM

by Anonymousreply 94September 24, 2024 5:59 PM

by Anonymousreply 96September 24, 2024 6:03 PM

*With a guy

by Anonymousreply 97September 24, 2024 6:04 PM

R95 - for Chappell - you can't wrap up your identity in Queer/Gay/Trans/Drag and then sit on the fence when these people are up for attacks and getting their rights taken away by one part.

For Janet - you can't breathe out of a white woman's nose and then call into question a presidential candidate's racial makeup.

That's why. Let me know if you have any other questions.

by Anonymousreply 98September 24, 2024 6:05 PM

R96 - that's the thing. She could have said she was bi-sexual - but she went full in on lesbian. A REAL lesbian or gay man have one attraction only.

This is my problem with the whole queer thing - and she's called herself a queer performer from the beginning without even kissing a girl before a couple of years ago.

And yes - it IS about gatekeeping. Not all gatekeeping is bad. When you aren't part of a community but you're stealing everything from it and claiming you are when you're not - that's bullshit and stealing an identity that is NOT authentic.

She's not an authentic person - at all.

by Anonymousreply 99September 24, 2024 6:12 PM

R98, none of that answers why we should care what they think, which was r95's point.

by Anonymousreply 100September 24, 2024 6:31 PM

R100 - because, whether they like it or not, singers are a brand and a product that conveys values and viewpoints. People may not buy a product from a brand whose politics conflict with theirs.

It's that easy. Let me know if you have any other elementary questions that need answering.

by Anonymousreply 101September 24, 2024 6:35 PM

You're not responding to the question asked but presenting a counterfactual, r101. In any case, Chappell Roan is currently trying to build up a loud, brash image where it doesn't really matter what she says as the aim is to garner attention and notoriety, while Janet Jackson doesn't give a shit.

I admit, as an actual lesbian I find Roan and her "queerness" and her tranny worship offputting, but, then again, lesbians are probably not her target audience.

by Anonymousreply 102September 24, 2024 6:47 PM

R102 Are there lesbians under 25 anymore?

by Anonymousreply 103September 24, 2024 7:00 PM

R103, actually, younger people are more likely to identify as gay or lesbian than older people. But conservative gays want to claim that gays are being "erased" by people identifying as non-binary or trans or whatever, which is not backed up by statistics

by Anonymousreply 104September 24, 2024 7:11 PM

She's a whiner and I'm sick of her already.

Good luck (with that), babe!

by Anonymousreply 105September 24, 2024 7:15 PM

R104, younger people identifying as gay or lesbian isn't the same as actually being gay or lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 106September 24, 2024 7:19 PM

I’d rather listen to the noise my shit makes leaving my ass

by Anonymousreply 107September 24, 2024 7:22 PM
I would not be surprised if she is a pseudo dyke

Aren't like 99% of them just this?

by Anonymousreply 108September 24, 2024 8:38 PM

R104 - linked facts or are you just pulling shit out of your ass again? I don't know of a single gay man or lesbian over 40 who doesn't identify as such or any of them who identifies as Queer, non-binary, whateverism.

You're full of shit.

by Anonymousreply 109September 24, 2024 8:48 PM

What r104 forgets to point out is that these "statistics" don't indicate the percentage of young people who are gay or lesbian, but the percentage of young people who "identify" as LGBTQIA++. So, they are basically worthless.

by Anonymousreply 110September 24, 2024 11:51 PM

Maybe as a lesbian she doesn't care if contraception and abortions are banned.

by Anonymousreply 111September 25, 2024 1:55 AM

You sound like an idiot R14

by Anonymousreply 112September 25, 2024 2:22 AM

I am 49 and love her.

by Anonymousreply 113September 25, 2024 2:30 AM

Good Luck, Babe is such a nice ode to Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love album.

by Anonymousreply 114September 25, 2024 2:38 AM

Reddit is aflame right now with her doubling down on bothsidesism.

by Anonymousreply 115September 25, 2024 4:40 PM

Good R115 for someone who says she values “critical thinking” she’s pretty incoherent.

by Anonymousreply 116September 25, 2024 4:42 PM

WHO?

by Anonymousreply 117September 25, 2024 4:54 PM

R116 - so that speech from today/yesterday - was a bit more clarifying. People do need to use critical thinking and learn the issues and where candidates stand.

She DID say she's not voting for Trump.

Now - not that she had this in mind before - but I can see her wanting sidestep the crazy that will come her way from the Trumpers if she endorses Kamala. Doesn't show much of a backbone and they really aren't her fans anyway - but you can't discount it.

Much of that video was word salad - but it was slightly better than before.

by Anonymousreply 118September 25, 2024 8:25 PM

Why does she have to endorse anyone?

by Anonymousreply 119September 25, 2024 8:31 PM

R119 - yes, correct - she could have sidestepped this whole thing if she didn't go on about it and not endorsing either candidate. But that's what she did - she put herself into this mess with the word salad bullshit from earlier this week. She could have just side-stepped the issue and left it alone - but no. Now she's playing the victim again.

So much abuse being famous - oh and everyone - listen up! She wants you to know this is one of her 'projects' as an artist. Meaning she is above this and may not do this anymore if y'all keep being abusive to her.

Chappell Roan Says She’s “Voting For F*cking Kamala,” But No VP Endorsement & “F*ck Trump, For F*cking Real”:

What kind of fucking statement is '...I don't know if it caught on with the older millenials?' Oh, that's right, they float us in the air and shoot us down after we turn 40. Yeah, I heard of her retro-fitted, Kate Bush 80's era so square she's hip meets Bette Midler in a bathhouse who retro-fitted her schtick a la Fanny Brice. Cyndi Lauper did it better, she was the underdog.

by Anonymousreply 122September 25, 2024 9:13 PM

She's an almost-was who never will be now.

by Anonymousreply 123September 25, 2024 9:27 PM

Gen Z have lost their minds and care more about what happens in Palestine than about anything which might directly affect them, like restrictions on abortion and contraception. Lots are saying they can't vote for anyone because nobody is promising to 'stop the genocide'.

by Anonymousreply 124September 26, 2024 1:19 AM

I don’t like her deliberately bored vocals in Good Luck Babe.

r121 Just to clarify, the VP part refers to Kamala not Walz, as I first assumed. Went to check the article because I thought that would be crazy talk. So, she's voting for Kamala while not endorsing her.
Another day and another video from Chappell Roan about the presidential election.

Shade from Deadline, lol.
Fuck Trump for fucking real, but fuck some of the shit that has gone down in the Democratic party that has failed people like me and you — and, more so, Palestine, and more so, every marginalized community in the world.

Obnoxious.

Chappell just cancelled her New York shows because she's 'overwhelmed'. Bit of a flaky Zayn Malik type.

TikTok, where they all get their “information”, is just as dangerous as Fox News.
