Borderlands is the legendarily bad, apparently

Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis star.

Good. JLC deserves a bomb.

The legendarily bad what?

by Anonymousreply 2August 8, 2024 2:06 PM

It did look awful from the trailer. 0% surpasses low expectations though.

by Anonymousreply 3August 8, 2024 2:09 PM

Who could be surprised? The audience is going to be people who've played and loved the game, and it obviously didn't respect them.

by Anonymousreply 4August 8, 2024 2:10 PM

Oh, Cate. Why?

[quote] Oh, Cate. Why?

I'm sure she figured that if they were going to pass over one of the greatest film performances of the 21st century in favor of a DEI award from a woman who acts like she has marbles in her mouth, then she may as well just cash in at this point.

This is such a pity.

The game is fantastic with great characters. This should have been a fantastic franchise, like Guardians of the Galaxy fun, with massive spin-off opportunity with other Vault Hunters and people like Handsome Jack.

They really blew it.

The director is Eli Roth of all people. He’s never made this kind of movie.

For good, bad, or indifferent, it needed to be someone with experience doing comedic superhero movies - Taika Waititi (although last Thor was awful), Gunn, or even Petyon Reed (Ant Man).

I can see thinking Roth with a horror and splatter films might work given the blood and guts gore of the game. But, in the game, it's played for laughs not jump scares. Headshots in the game are funny, not serious.

They didn’t respect the fans at all. The casting was awful, Cate and Jamie are 20 years too old to play their characters , Kevin Hart is a joke, and Tiny Tina was not tiny.

Halo was cancelled a few weeks ago too. And a lot of it had to do with not respecting the material and the “fuck the fans” mentality.

It just doesn’t work.

by Anonymousreply 12August 8, 2024 2:49 PM

What "-ism" will JLC blame for this failure.

by Anonymousreply 13August 8, 2024 2:53 PM

Elsewhere, people have mentioned [italic]The Last of Us[/italic] and [italic]Fallout[/italic] as counter-examples of when live-action adaptations have worked. It can be done well, but requires people who know and care about the source material.

R14 = the legendarily Henry Cavill

I think we need to tell this to Amazon's Rings of Power and Wheel of Time, Star Wars, and Alex Kurtzman.

by Anonymousreply 16August 8, 2024 3:02 PM

Star Wars is doing so bad with the fans, they’re too scared to make movies at this point.

by Anonymousreply 17August 9, 2024 5:59 AM

R16 Yeah I don’t understand why Hollywood hates fans so much. They thought fanbases didn’t matter and they could do what they wanted but that can’t happen with social media today. And they refuse to learn.

Whack franchise to adapt anyway. I'd love to see HBO take on Mass Effect.

$120 million to make Borderlands. Here are a few of the Letterboxd reviews from today's opening.

1/2 star: "Everyone in this movie should be banned for minimum one year." 1/2 star: "No amount of drugs could have prepared me for this you couldn't pay me to rewatch this movie." 1/2 star: "Putrid"

Looks like we could have a Razzie sweep of unprecedented magnitude...
