Liza Minnelli to Write Memoir on her Legendary Acting, Singing Career
by Anonymous | reply 232 | August 26, 2024 9:51 PM |
Of course Feinstein is masterminding it. Fucking leech.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | August 6, 2024 6:50 PM |
I would love it if it was brutally honest and raw and juicy, but... We know we're not gonna get that.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 6, 2024 6:59 PM |
I don't know much about Feinstein beyond his albums, the Gerschwin thing, and seemingly appointing himself as Liza's guardian. What's so bad about him?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 6, 2024 7:00 PM |
You answered your own question, R3.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 6, 2024 7:01 PM |
If her posts on Datalounge are any indication of her writing abilities I’ll pass.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | August 6, 2024 7:02 PM |
So he’s writing it. Now and then he will read a passage to Liza who is sitting there schaking and schmoking and she’ll signal her approval by bursting into song. They waited too late, just like Babs. 15 years ago this would have sold and Liza would have enjoyed the book tour.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 6, 2024 7:02 PM |
If she reads her own audiobook, I'll purchase not only that but the outtakes.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 6, 2024 7:04 PM |
Well, there' was Cabaret and then a TV Special and then Studio 54 with Warhol and then, well, it's kind of a blank after that. Is that enough, Michael? s

I will need at least three chapters on Rent-a-Cop and one on Stepping Out.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 6, 2024 7:10 PM |
I will only need a paragraph or two description of his cock and a 10 page photo spread of him shirtless in his prime.

Liza's practically illiterate, how can she write? Oh, talk into a tape recorder?

Liza Minnelli is a national treasure.
And Liza and Johnny Mathis should have received Kennedy Center Honors years ago. Shame on the Kennedy Center.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 6, 2024 8:16 PM |
I want her to talk about what bad breath Feinstein has and how he's such a manipulative toady.

Barbra Streisand’s memoir was 900+ pages. How many will Liza’s be?

I cannot wait for this masterclass in sequins, jazz hands, and surviving marriages longer than a Vegas show residency.

R10 - Also, Baryshnikov, Peter Sellers and Martin Scorsese.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | August 6, 2024 8:27 PM |
She must want to get her version of the story on record to cement her version of events and as an ode to Momma. She doesn’t need the money, so her only concern could be her and Judy’s legacies.
So, unless she has a bone to pick with someone or wants to be honest for historical accuracy, this will be a hagiography.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 6, 2024 8:28 PM |
I'm thinking of working with clay, so I will definitely buy this book.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 6, 2024 8:28 PM |
I’m sure we’ll get ten chapters about her father and one about Judy. She’s always seemed to prefer talking about him.

Anytime someone elderly has a lot of money and someone shows up by their side almost 24/7, it gives people the side eye.
Not saying Liza hasn't been friends with Feinstein for years, or Feinstein is doing anything, but Liza had a lot of gay men friends when she lived in NYC whom she hung out with in public and worked with. Jim Caruso and Billy Stritch to name two. Now they all seemed to have disappeared, and he's always photographed with her.
Plus "The Gershwin Thing" should send up red flags, if the gossip I've read about on here about that is true. Also, he's rumored not to be a nice person.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 6, 2024 8:34 PM |
Liza was always more suited to the stage. She could be charismatic and BIG in movies for certain kinds of roles, but to quote Dorothy Parker, she would "run the gamut of emotions from A to B". She played herself. As far as being a STAR, in the 70s and 80s, men like Eastwood and Stallone could be big box-office draws with limited acting ranges, but women who were stars like Streep, Dunaway and Spacek were all well rounded actors.
Stepping Out is a guilty pleasure. It was originally a successful stage play, and when Liza agreed to be in the film the part was re-written to be a star vehicle for her. But it really needs to be watched for the other characters.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | August 6, 2024 8:52 PM |
[quote] It was originally a successful stage play
No it wasn't. It was as big a flop onstage as it was on film.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 6, 2024 8:55 PM |
R25 I was watching “What’s My Line?” and Liza was the celebrity guest on it during the end portion of the show where the panel is blindfolded and have to guess which celeb they have brought on. After the Panel deduced it was Liza, she said, “I’m Vince Minelli’s kid too,” because everyone is always so focused on her being Judy’s daughter. It’s so understandable, but sometimes you forget that a star has two famous parents when one of the parents is one of the most iconic stars of all time.

Liza Minnelli Memoir Will Be Published in 2026
The stage and screen star is collaborating with Michael Feinstein and more on her autobiography.
The memoir will be a candid review of Minnelli's life, both professionally and personally, from her childhood in the spotlight as the daughter of Judy Garland and Vincente Minnelli to her breakout successes in Cabaret and Liza With a Z, and through her marriages and struggles with substance abuse.
The audio edition will include bonus content with never-released autobiographical recordings and musings that Minnelli and Feinstein have been working on for 15 years.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 7, 2024 12:04 AM |
"Since I was old enough to put pencil to paper, people asked me to write books about my career ... my life ... my loves ... my family," said Minnelli in a statement. "Absolutely not! 'Tell it when I'm gone!' Was my philosophy. So, why did I change my mind? A sabotaged appearance at the Oscars, in front of billions of people ... a film with twisted half-truths ... a recent miniseries that just didn't get it right. All made by people who didn't know my family, and don't really know me. Finally, I was mad as hell! Over dinner one night, I decided, it's my own damn story … I'm gonna share it with you because of all the love you've given me.
"I turned to my most beloved friend, Michael Feinstein and yelled: 'Help!' We've been joined at the hip for 40 years. As Ambassador of the Great American Songbook and my absolute favorite collaborator, Michael's one of the greats, he's razor-sharp and, and he tells the truth. That's important because, as I fly towards my eighth decade of living, memories differ. I agreed to meet with only one company, Grand Central Publishing. We fell in love. This tome has a unique place in history. Most of you don't know how far back we go. The Minnellis have been in show business for literally hundreds of years!
by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 7, 2024 12:05 AM |
"Today, after incredible events and life-threatening battles … I am truly 'Lady Peaceful, Lady Happy.' Thank you all for loving me so much ... being concerned about me. I want you to know I'm still here, still kickin' ass, still loving life and still creating. So, until this book arrives, know that I'm laughing, safe in every way, surrounded by loved ones, and excited to see what's right around the curve of life. Kids, wait 'til you hear this!"
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 7, 2024 12:06 AM |
The book will be 200 pages, counting index. It'll be what Feinstein will include. Liza is in no condition to talk let alone write.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 7, 2024 12:07 AM |

She's flying towards her eighth decade of living ? Isn't she already in her 70s ? The math ain't mathin.
And I say here and now - this will never, ever happen. Feinstein will publish the aborted manuscript long after she's dead and buried.

She can entitle it: “Mama Said There’d Be Days Like This!”
by Anonymous | reply 55 | August 7, 2024 1:57 AM |
She could title it “Daddy’s looks; Mama’s Pizazz.”
Or “Everything my father taught me about landing a husband.”
I hope she talks about Joel Grey. Any why Kaye Ballard thought she could get away with singing “Maybe This Time.” And what she did sitting around Studio 54 all the time.

What film and miniseries is she talking about? Does she mean the documentary?

The film is Judy with Renee Zellweger, I don't know what the miniseries is.

r28: Billy Stritch & Jim Caruso were very protective of Liza when she lived in NYC and didn't exploit her the way Feinstein seems to be doing.
I'm sure Feinstein wrote Liza;'s "quotes." I can't imagine Liza burbling "I turned to my most beloved friend, Michael Feinstein..... We've been joined at the hip for 40 years. As Ambassador of the Great American Songbook and my absolute favorite collaborator, Michael's one of the greats, he's razor-sharp and, and he tells the truth. "
Dissing Billy & Jim is exactly the sort of thing Feinstein would do.

Depends on how you count "decades." Billy Idol said he wanted to put out an album: "Three decades of Billy Idol," i.e., late '70s, '80s (all of it) and early '90s.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | August 7, 2024 4:34 AM |
Agree that she and Babs are ~ 15 years late in writing autobios.
I also don't think she'll put anything juicy in there that nobody's ever heard. I also don't think she will admit her father was gay or talk about how she and her mother married only gay men.
I think she still enjoys lunches with friends like Joan Collins and Feinstein, but I think she's greatly diminished. Not sure how much she can participate in writing a good autobio.

I want to know how she's going to write - or re-write - her time in the musical "Victor / Victoria" subbing for Andrews. What will she say about working with her costar Tony Roberts - who absolutely hated working with her ? Maybe she'll skip that part...and go directly to "Andrew Lloyd Webber begged me to star as Norma Desmond on Broadway..."

Hopefully they are boozy mess and feature lots of Liza-isms.

R120 is correct. Ever see Liza in an interview> She is extraordinarily gracious, engaging, polite and professional. Liza is of a different era. Liza make a point of saying other performers particularly are "swell," "so funny," and "terrific." Liza does not talk trash. But that doesn't mean her book will be lacking. Liza has a million stories. She has led an exciting and intriguing life. Liza is an extraordinarily talented woman. One of show businesses best.

I don't think she shared the same kind of friendship with Summer as Streisand did, but when Summer died she did say she was friends with her since the 70s. Maybe she meant the 90s ?

R108 On Larry King, Liza said she had almost total recall.
R122 The career stalling started before that, per Stevie Phillips, her manager (and Mama's manager too). She says the film career stalled when instead of doing the all important follow-up picture to her Oscar winning turn in Cabaret right away, Liza fired Stevie and went to Vegas, where the money and the parties were. So the film career went cold right after an Oscar win for the actor who wasn't a conventional film ingenue anyway, and by the time she got around to making another movie, it didn't have the same heat.
Her follow-up to Cabaret should have been a contemporary comedy that was genuinely funny and not another period piece, directed by Stanley Donen, who was working at MGM at the same time as Mama! And a Kander and Ebb song and a score by Ralph Burns.

I’m always turned off by her manic “Mama wasn’t tragic, Mama was HAPPY!” chant.
Certainly Judy Garland was resilient… but one has to see she was incredibly fucked up, and spiraling down the drain.

[quote]On Larry King, Liza said she had almost total recall.
I can believe that because it was said of Judy that she could watch a choreographer run through a dance sequence once and then repeat it almost perfectly.
But I think Liza’s party life and old age have done some damage to her.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | August 8, 2024 3:41 PM |
Could Liza have played Mary Magdalene in the film version of Jesus Christ Superstar? Obviously it’s not a dance role, but she did vulnerability well and the sincerity of “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” may have cemented her movie career more easily.

Liza never would have had a film career. Cabaret was a great film and she was great in it, but she was too eccentric and homely. She was not leading lady material. Stick her into quirky comedies and she could be good but only as a supporting character. She's very difficult to take as a movie star.

A 21st century reboot of Harold and Maude. Liza’s Maude would be hilarious when played against Timothee Chalamet, though Tom Holland would be better suited for the role.

The thought of Liza as Mary Magdalene in a sequined toga designed by Halston and doing high kicks while belting out the score is hilarious.

She fared better later on with her TV projects. She did much better and showed more range in TV movies like A Time To Live, Parallel Lives and West Side Waltz.
She came up in Hollywood in the 70's, which was a gritty, realistic era of moviemaking. It wasn't Liza's style.
by Anonymous | reply 147 | August 8, 2024 9:03 PM |
TV movies aren't motion pictures and that's where her failures were. I don't think even Liza understood what image she wanted to project and she wasn't anywhere near a good enough actress to get by on talent. Although she had an Oscar and another nomination, she was another in the long line of theatrical Divas who were poison onscreen.
by Anonymous | reply 148 | August 8, 2024 9:15 PM |
Barbra Streisand was already doing the quirky girl comedies, so there wasn’t room for another ugly quirky girl in the movies. And Bette Midler was up and coming. So Liza couldn’t find her niche.
Plus, she was probably trying to shake off the “Judy’s daughter” stigma. Judy told Liza not to sing any of her songs and Judy sang everybody, so it must have been difficult.
Unfortunately, Liza also wasn’t pretty enough to play Louise in Gypsy, but wouldn’t it have been interesting to see Judy and Liza do the Gypsy movie?
by Anonymous | reply 149 | August 8, 2024 10:38 PM |
R149, Liza sang Do It Again in Matter of Time and she did it dreadfully. Pauline Kael said that Vincent Minnelli photographed her so unflatteringly in the number that her features became gargantuan.

[quote]Liza sang Do It Again in Matter of Time and she did it dreadfully.
Judy was dead by then and Liza knew that if it came to a fight, she could snap Kay Thompson like a twig, the only person who swore to seek revenge if Liza sang Judy’s songs.
by Anonymous | reply 151 | August 8, 2024 10:56 PM |
Liza could (and should) have done Gypsy in the late 80's/early 90's. She was at the top of her peak as an entertainer, she was going through a sober period, and she was the best she ever looked. Liza lived that role and she wasn't unafraid to go all the way there.
Bette was too hammy and Barbra would have tried to make Rose into some misguided victim. Her vanity would never allow her to be portrayed as a monster. You would leave the movie thinking Louise was some ungrateful bitch.

[quote]Turns out Liza is writing this memoir. Her two friends are by going through her archives. It’s an overview of her entire career. It’s an authorized biography, not an autobiography.
Written by Liza, so it's an autobiography. Or am I missing something here?
by Anonymous | reply 153 | August 8, 2024 11:21 PM |
As I explained months ago with Streisand's book :
An autobiography is a book chronicling the author's life story in chronological order, and includes an index.
A memoir is the same thing, but does NOT necessarily go in chronological order and does NOT include an index (this is what Streisand delivered).
A biography is not written by the subject, but by others. It may or may not have an index.

R160 Gest convinced Liza he had reached an agreement with Andrew Lloyd Webber back in 2002, and Liza was going to play 'Norma Desmond' in the movie version of his stage musical. That's how trusting she was. So she , in turn, started telling the press she was preparing for her next movie - and that ALW chose her over the other stars ( Glenn Close, Streisand, Cher and Streep). ALW had to clear that up (he was courting Streisand at the time) and let the press know none of that was true - it was just a dream Gest had for his wife. ALW had no interest in casting Liza in anything.
I think that was the first time a house fell on top of Liza, letting her know Gest was a bull shit artist.

Rarely do I comment on false press stories, but since I’ve been asked for a comment on an impending one, I shall comment. By way of explanation, please consider the following: There is a —— masquerading as a human named Rob Shuter who has previously written false stories about me and my relationship with Liza. They are such outrageous stories that even as he wrote them I believe he knew they were not true. Why do I believe that? Because I actually know this jerk socially, and when he twice wrote a laughable story about Liza being in love with a Gay married man (me), he never wrote personally to ask me for a comment before the story was printed, and he always quotes unnamed sources saying they are ‘close friends’ of Liza’s but has never quoted a single source on the record because I believe the stories are invented. Anyone who knows her well says the same thing. He has never quoted ANY of her close friends for ANY story: Ben Vereen, Mia Farrow, Joel Grey, Marisa Berenson, Jim Caruso, Billy Stritch, Arlene Lazare, Obba Babatunde and I could go on. Those are people who see or speak to her regularly and know the truth, but the truth gets in the way of a fake story. So they always say “ A close source” etc. How is it that these “close sources” do not know for example that her dogs are no longer alive or other basic info that anyone who is her “close” friend would know? Because they are fake. How does it work that they get away with it? They pay someone to say things that are off the record to fit the story they invent and the cite journalistic confidentiality to protect the false source.
