It seems like with cultural shifts and longer lifespans is 40 still the cultural start of middle age. I think middle aged now starts around 48.
Is 40 still middle aged?

In DL years, 40 means you're five years into "eldergay" territory.

I would not say it 'starts' at 48, but I generally hear people say middle aged is between 40-50.
Why do you ask? Are you 64 and wanting to call yourself middle aged?

I woudn't know.

R2 No. I’m dreading becoming middle aged in a few years lol. So people don’t consider those in their 50s to be middle aged? In my circles and family we do.

I look at it like this: average life span is around 80. Still, many people are making it past 90 these days, so let's call the age you could reasonably expect to live to see 90.
Divide that into thirds: young, middle-aged, old.
Young: Birth to 30.
Middle-aged: 31-60.
Old: 61+.
I realize many people will argue that this skews way too young ("31 isn't middle-aged! And 61 isn't old!"), but if you go purely by numbers rather than feelings, this is accurate.

No that's not accurate r9. It's not about feelings, you left out entire categories.
Child: 0 -12
Teen: 13- 18
Young Adult: 18 -24
Adult: 25 - 35
Middle-Age 35 - 64
Senior 65 - Death

Middle aged does not start at 35. It starts at 45 now.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 6, 2024 1:19 AM |
Really? So 40 is not middle-age? I find that hard to believe. Let me guess, you are close to double that age.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 6, 2024 1:24 AM |
I’m only 35. Early 40s is now longer middle aged. It’s been settled. Don’t argue the point anymore.

Do people really live that long?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 6, 2024 1:26 AM |
Average life expectancy for men is 74. So, yeah.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 6, 2024 1:26 AM |
For women it's 80 so Kamala will win.

Middle aged has never been a precise designation for the middle years of one’s life. It’s a euphemism for adults who are aging but not yet elderly.
Insisting that it’s about the mathematics of life expectancy gets the term wrong. It’s a polite fiction to call a 55 year old middle aged even though almost no one lives to 110.

Seems like the practical end of childbearing would be a reasonable cut off. Early 40’s, round up to 45.
Once you reach the cut off for full social security at 67 you are old.

If you cant get a Senior discount on anything until you are 65, what is 60?

When I was younger, I thought that ~ 37 was the beginning of middle-aged.
