Everybody on Twitter is posting tweets about how "According to Keir Starmer, I'm now a right-wing thug" and posting a picture of themselves. People are angry!

[quote]Police in Liverpool said a number of officers had been injured dealing with “serious disorder” on Saturday. Videos posted on social media showed crowds of anti-immigrant protesters assembled along the city’s riverside, shouting slogans, such as “Stop the Boats” – a reference to the dinghies used by asylum seekers to cross the English Channel to the UK mainland.
I don't see why this is something people should be demonized for, as the media is portraying them.

A black kid who was born in the UK committed a horrible crime, and now white people are attacking blacks, immigrants, and Muslims all over the country.
Yeah, sure, that’s perfectly reasonable.

None of this is legitimate, just racist thugs looking for a fight. The people of Southport and Hartlepool rightly denounced it while they cleaned up the destruction caused by these English Defence League thugs. Meanwhile their hero Tommy Ten Names has fucked off to Spain on his Irish passport to avoid being charged with hate crimes.
There are reports of coaches travelling between cities to increase their numbers and cause chaos. This is highly organised mass violence.

UK should release all the crime stats (not just about these most recent evens).
Not just about the birth and immigration status of the victims. Also the birth and immigration status of the perpetrators. Age, background and status. When they arrived (if immigrants), where they came from, etc.
Honest statistics can either support or deny the claims that certain kinds of crimes have increased with the criminals not native born Brits.
Reliable information should not be hidden from view at the instigation of either side.

The victims are victims, so why should it matter where they were born and their immigration status, R14? Seems like an unnecessary attempt to placate the far-right's bigotry more than anything else. And if the British far-right are anything like the U.S. far-right, you will have a situation where whatever statistics the government puts out will be disputed, labeled "fake/fake news" or become the subject of some vast conspiracy theory.

The Right in the UK lost faith in the Conservatives (who talked up immigration as being a huge problem and then proceeded to fail to tackle it) and instead turned to Reform. These delusional people genuinely believed that they were going to break through in a way which would see Farage become at least the Leader of the Opposition. Instead, they only managed to elect Farage and a few other rabble-rousers. The rabble has now been roused, and is currently having a temper tantrum and stealing cheap shoes and swiping pasties from Greggs.
It’s criminal and embarrassing, but not much more than that. Like the Capitol rioters in the US, these people are incriminating themselves in a very public way. The riots are making the headlines this week, but by next week the story will be about the mass arrests and charges of looting and arson.

Interestingly, the last period of serious rioting in the UK occurred in 2011, just one year after the Conservatives ended Labour’s long period in office. The stabbings in Southport by the 17 year old were a catalyst but I don't think this would have happened without the Manchester Airport incident.
Yes the police officer shouldn't have kicked the guy in the head, but it was clear something serious had gone down before and you had the left wing race baiters calling it a George Floyd moment and celebrity lawyers booking tv appearances to attach the police. Politicians were reassuring "the community" about the incident and putting pressure on the police. And then it turned out the men had attacked the police officers first which was what everyone had suspected. The police office remains suspended but no one has been charged with the assaults on the police officer yet.
So I get why people are angry about that - it does feel like "the community" (Pakistani Muslims) are being treated differently but if you're angry about police getting beaten up, why the fuck are you supporting "protests" that attack the police? Jesus fucking Christ.
And yes there is SO much hypocrisy in looking at how different groups committing the same crimes are treated. But It's quite easy to condemn all sides. Black teenagers ransacking a phone shop? LOCK UP THE CUNTS! White men ransacking a phone shop? LOCK UP THE CUNTS!
If I was advising the far right I'd tell them to use the language of the left. Not "Immigrants out" but "Decolonise Britain". Use slogans like "Resistance by any means necessary", like the people on the Palestine march in London yesterday, where a man stopped by some Jewish protesters and gave a Nazi salute.

Twitter really encourages people to take an absolute view rather than acknowledge two things can be right at the same time.

Oh, please! Do not be ridiculous: these riots are caused by the fact that the Tories have driven down living standards since they came to power in 2010, which has mostly gone unchallenged by Labour. The only one who tried to put a stop to their greed, corruption and abuses of power was Jeremy Corbyn, and he was relentlessly vilified in the media and was sabotaged by many powerful members of his own party who are Conservatives in all but name, such as the dastardly Keir Starmer.
The poor and the working class are suffering enormously and they are publicly expressing their anger, which sadly has taken a dangerously xenophobic turn. Putin has nothing to do with this, because he isn't responsible for the austerity imposed by the Tories with the tacit agreement of Labour elites. I know that blaming Russia and China for everything has become fashionable since the repulsively evil Killary Cunton lost the US presidential election in 2016, but these accusations are becoming little more than collective hysteria... Oh, and by the way: Killary lost became the Electoral College gave the victory to Trump, even though she had received more votes. The Russian state had nothing to do with this.

From the BBC update today in Rotherham, most famous for the grooming gang scandal where 1000s of young girls were raped by Pakistani Muslim gangs
There are around 100 demonstrators supporting refugees and asylum seekers outside a Holiday Inn Express Hotel on the outskirts of Rotherham in south Yorkshire. The hotel is believed to house asylum seekers.
The crowd has been chanting, “say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here.”
But in the last half an hour, a larger number of people opposing the asylum seekers have arrived in the hotel car park.
Many of them are waving St George and Union flags. They’ve been chanting, “You’re not welcome anymore” and some of them are wearing masks.
There’s also a large group of onlookers, many of them shoppers from the Aldi supermarket opposite, who are watching events.
A large police presence, which includes some officers on horseback, is also here.
The rival demonstrators are being kept apart by an island of purple barriers. Other than some angry chanting, for now, there hasn’t been much trouble.
Awfu.

It's impossible to justify the rioting but to put this into some context.
1. It's hot and sunny, the school holidays have started and there's a lot of alcohol and coked up angry men involved.
2. Most of these areas are poor working class areas and the white working class there are generally common no frills people who have felt ignored for years and who haven't benefitted from membership of the EU, migration etc. A times it has felt they are despised by the establishment, sneered at and even pitied. Told "you're too stupid to vote".
3. They see immigrants as being prioritised over them and they feel muslims have more rights, are pandered to more than they are. I'm not sure this is true but the Manchester Airport incident felt like this was true. Another example was the way Kate Forbes was treated in the SNP leadership contest. She's a socially conservative Christian who has never tried to change party policy on social issues but was vilified for her believes. Whereas Muslim Humza Yousaf was lionised because of his faith by the same people, even when he shared an official photo of him and his male relatives praying in Bute House.
4. There was no real issue with the huge number of Ukrainian refugees who came to the UK over the last 2 years, in fact left wing Channel 4 news tried to create a story that Ukrainian refugees are racist after one family apparently said they didn't want to live in an area with black people. But the images of the large number of boat crossings, most of which are young men, really grinds people's gears. There is a patronising attitude towards critics of the boat crossings when they ask "but why can't they stay in France, a safe country".
5. There's also a media trust issue. where cover ups and skewed reporting has been blatant and people are turning away from mainstream media and just consuming "news" and opinions that reinforce their views. Tweets and clips go viral from "media personalities" who are increasingly desperate for attention and who just love race baiting, whether right wing or left wing. This amplifies the "they hate us" mentality.
6. Some people are just racist.
Again none of that justifies any of the violence and intimidation and the people out on the streets are generally cunts.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 4, 2024 2:24 PM |

England has a very violent side to its culture. The most obvious examples, football riots and gangs of drunks lads assaulting any body they think they can get away with assaulting. Old men handicapped people anybody will do as long as they can't fight back. If you want to get mugged and assaulted England is the best place to do it. The football games have police on the trains all the way from the suburbs to the stadium. Once at the stadium there are lines of police between the supporters who are segregated to each side of the stadium with their own side.

[quote]England has a very violent side to its culture.
[quote]Every culture on Earth has a violent side.
There's a bloodthirsty streak among segments of the English population that is evident from their "naming and shaming" culture, egged on by the red-top newspapers (formerly known as 'tabloids'). The now-defunct Sunday News of the World (under the heading 'Name and Shame') would run photographs and whereabouts of men convicted of molesting children who had been released from prison. As abhorrent as those sex offenders are, you can wonder how responsible it is for media outlets to encourage members of the public to go into their neighbourhoods and commit potential violence. See also: the Jamie Bulger killers. This blood-thirsty culture is absent in other civilized (European) countries. The Netherlands, France, Denmark, Spain, Belgium, and other countries don't have the sort of lurid tabloid culture that Britain does (at least not at that base level), presumably because general levels of education among their populations are slightly higher.
One of the most vivid, graphic descriptions of English violence can be found in Bill Buford's 1990 account of English hooligan subculture (he spent seven years with a group of them), "Among the Thugs." I read it more than 30 years ago and still remember the scene where hundreds of English men descend on Turin, Italy and collectively smash up the beautiful city centre.

A outsider's question for anyone from or familiar with the UK:
If supporters of the far-right were able to hold these 'protests' in multiple cities across the UK with the Southport incident as a pretext, where were they during last month's election? If they hold such strong views on immigration to the point of riots, you'd think they would have been highly motivated to turn out and back the far-right parties, who didn't perform as I understand it? Or are they just the subset of the population that isn't politically inclined and don't usually vote?

31st July - Southend violence (not far right related)

So what happened with this Manchester airport thing?
by Anonymous | reply 90 | August 4, 2024 5:47 PM |
A video was released of some sort of fight where a young Pakistani man was lying on the floor and a police officer kicked him in the head. There were 2 other officers in the scene, blood on the floor, there had been some kind of disturbance but there was no footage of what happened.
The narrative became that the police had violently assaulted these innocent Asian men, assaulted their mother, it was a British George Floyd moment. Celebrity commentators were all over the media offering their judgment. Politicians were saying how awful it was and how they needed to support "the community". A march of Muslim men ended up at the local police station. Politicians who held back and said we should wait for more information we attacked for being part of the problem. Celebrity lawyers were quick to sign up the poor innocent victims. The police officer was duly suspended and there were calls for him to be charged with attempted murder.
Some MPs from the Farage populist party celebrated the police kicking the guy regardless of the context.
And then the footage from the airport was leaked. It clearly showed an incident where the two Asian men brutally attacked the police, punching female officers in the face, leaving one officer standing. The male officer was punched repeatedly and when the guy was on the floor that's when he kicked him in the head.
The kick was done in anger but the police officer was the victim of a vicious assault.

When immigrants commit crimes, that’s proof they aren’t compatible with their society.
When people who hate immigrants commit crimes, that’s *also* proof immigrants aren’t compatible with their society.

Stephen Yaxley Lennon is race baiting arsehole and there are many on left who also want it both ways.
When young black men terrorised the public in 2011, attacking people in the street, burning down buildings, looting, robbing, there were those who defended their actions on the grounds that they were somehow forced into it by economic circumstances.
Both positions are repulsive. People chose to riot, to loot, and should be punished accordingly.

Keep calling each and every single person that opposes uncontrolled Muslim migration far right. It will only make it less and less offensive and trivial and more people identifying with it.
More and more, more and more, gays and lesbians are voting for le Pen in France and Vox in Spain. And you know what is sad about it? That they have been pushed to it, almost to vote against their own interests. But when you have a case like my Cuban friend whose husband is a native French, being harassed and attacked because of being gay by Muslims, guess what, you start questioning your liberal views. This is what the real extreme right wing ideology makers and programmers want. They want people to associate progressive views with Islamization, etc. they know that most people do not care about gays or even trans, but this is without a thought, a winning issue, and trust me, they will win.
We need strong pro gay marriage anti Muslim inmigration political parties. If not, gays will be the ones to be blamed 50 years from now of the destruction of “western civilization “ and the liberals. While the Eastern European countries with their anti gay, illiberal and theocratic governments flourish and prosper in an all white society without Arabs and sub Saharan people. This is just starting and we haven’t even arrived to the tipping point yet. The future does not look good for gays, especially in Europe. The Americas will be once again a safe haven for European gays and lesbians as this is not going to happen in the united state and Latin America countries to the extent that it will in Western Europe.

Babe - these "protesters" aka rioters are burning down libraries, local law centres and they tried to burn down a hotel housing refugees. They smashed a garden wall to get bricks they could throw at the police guarding a mosque.
Not wanting Islamic cultures made normal in Britain is not far right - trying to kill muslims because of their religion is far right.

[Quote] It's the unfettered migration that's the problem.
The instant that a migrant or son of a migrant commits a crime, it’s “they’re all this way, kill them all and keep them out.”
When a native born commits a crime, those same people shrug and give various social reasons/excuses for it. It’s absolutely human nature at work, tribal othering, 100%.

There is also historical tension in Cardiff between African and West Indian heritage communities. The strongest anti Somali comments have been from middle class 3rd generation West Indian Cardiffians who think Somalis are lazy entitled spongers who breed like rabbits.

Being told repeatedly by posh people that they were too stupid to know what they were voting for?

Being told that immigration would come down when it has gone up?
Being told it's their fault pro EU people have to wait an extra 30 minutes in airport passport checks when they themselves can't afford to go on holiday?

The Conservatives spent 14 years in power actively complaining that immigration was a great social evil, and simultaneously doing nothing at all effective to reduce it. There is no greater way of destroying trust in politics while simultaneously poisoning community relations.
And, of course, the Tory press will now lay the blame for the riots on the Labour, which has been inpower for 6 weeks.

by Anonymous | reply 147 | August 5, 2024 3:57 PM |
R146, I think immigration can be a good or a bad thing depending on how it is controlled. Boat loads of young men being smuggled in are bad. However, I know from experience that the NHS would fall apart without the nurses, doctors and auxiliary staff it has employed from across the globe.
Blaming immigrants for poverty in Britain’ poorest places is a fallacy though. The Cameron/Osborne government used the financial crisis as an excuse to try to shrink the size of the state. And by imposing austerity, it killed off he economic recovery which was beginning as they came into power. And the poorest paid the biggest price.
I have nothing at all against immigration controls, but we have had the worst of all possible worlds: a governing party which not only failed to discuss the benefits we get from immigration, but which has actually portrayed it as an existential threat while at the same time utterly failing to reduce the numbers coming in.

The defeated party concedes defeat, becomes the opposition and will try to do better in the next election. You also don't have a two-party system where one of the major political parties has basically become a cult of personality whose supporters are already showing signs that they aren't going to accept the election outcome unless they win.
It is a shame that if this happened in the U.S., I wouldn't be surprised at all. The likely difference is that the 150 or so arrests in the U.K. would be 150 or so injuries and deaths in the U.S.

The main issue with immigration is that:
1) The number of refugees has been grossly overrepresented by the sensationalist press, which has often equated them to undocumented immigrants, foreigners who commit crimes and radical Muslims. This could have easily been clarified by the government, but no effort is made because to do so because it might be convenient for politicians to attack specific communities at any given time; just look at how the Tories have relentlessly attacked EU citizens, Africans, Muslims and Syrians, and Keir Starmer recently targeted Bangladeshis.
2) Various political factions have turned immigrants into a weapon that they constantly use against each other, while deliberately hiding the fact that a large immigrant population limits the bargaining power of the entire working class (which includes the very immigrants being demonized), and increases the power and privileges of the elites by lowering wages and living standards.
3) Neoliberal policies dictate that basic services must be reduced to minimums or privatized, which is effectively what has been happening over the las three decades. The government keeps investing less and less in these services and blames immigrants for this, deliberating obscuring the fact that it's the government itself that isn't adjusting funding according to a fluctuating population, and assigning contracts to their friends and sponsors among the aforementioned elites.
4) Many areas are afflicted by permanent economic degradation and not a single program has been developed to genuinely help them, because they are deemed to be electorally unimportant. This, paired with the media's tendency to anathematize foreigners, has promoted the spurious notion that immigrants get everything as long as they're dark and the poor get nothing if they are white. In reality, the poor are powerless and vulnerable to scarcity regardless of their skin colour.
5) Racism and xenophobia are real issues. While many people dare not openly state it, they feel that they should be privileged because they're British, while immigrants ought to live in increasing poverty according to their origins. It would be worth noticing that many non-Caucasian British communities hold these views as well, which is why they felt extremely threatened by the arrival of Central and Eastern European immigrants and voted for Brexit en masse.

R160 and don’t forget the thousands of homeless people sleeping on the streets in pretty much all areas of the UK these days, most of them white and UK born, whilst the mostly young male economic refugees who arrive by boat everyday are living in nice hotels with food provided.
Fuck right off with your shit show white privileged accusations. Go try sleeping on the streets for a few weeks and then tell us how you feel about the young healthy male refugees who’ve paid fuck all into the system, and many of them are here just to milk the system and to avoid going to war in their own countries. The UK has been a soft touch for too long, and that’s the reason they cross over several other safe countries in or to travel here.
Almost all of them would kick your head in for being gay.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | August 5, 2024 8:35 PM |
First of all R164, I have never said that white people are innately privileged - have you read at all the parts when I was talking about white poverty, all the poor being powerless and non-Caucasian Brits also feeling threatened by immigration?
Moreover, I STRONGLY doubt that the homeless were the ones rioting, or that the people rioting have ever done shit for anyone but themselves. The homelessness issue is VERY serious indeed, but something tells me that the people setting fire to libraries, smashing hotel windows, attacking black men by dragging them out of their cars and engaging in shameful acts of vandalism, aren't exactly volunteering in soup kitchens or donating to Shelter.
Moreover, do you think that those yobs wouldn't kick our heads in for being gay if they could get away with it? Many of them only talk about homophobia because they can use it to attack Muslims, but they're not exactly gay-friendly themselves. Oh, and please tell me where have I EVER justified Islamism or held Muslims blameless for the many problems they have caused?
Still, demonizing everyone and claiming that those who are one step away from homelessness themselves have it super easy, is absurd. The real problem are the industrialists, the bankers and the corporate thieves that control Parliament, because their friends are in power. However, neither you nor those chavs are attacking them, because you know that attacking those bastards has serious consequences. On the other hand, punching someone who is just as powerless as the rest of the working class and has an equally shitty life, but has a different accent or skin colour, is easy and makes them feel better because they're cowards.
Now, that is fucking shameful.

Large groups of mostly young men pay criminal gangs to be taken from France to England across the English Channel (about 20 miles) where they claim asylum In 2023 there were nearly 30,000 small boat crossings, down from 46,000 in 2022.

R176, I posted earlier that the man charged in connection with Liverpool library is a career criminal with 16 convictions. He might not be far right, he might not be a racist, but he is a career criminal.
In an effort to calm things down the Scottish Pakistani version of Jimmy McGill held a press conference with the Pakistani family who attacked the police officers in Manchester Airport and complained that his clients had been subject to racist abuse and that the men who attacked the police officers want to be police officers themselves.

Feels like a lot of people are disappointed there haven't been mass riots this evening.
The photos of the anti racism, anti fascist "anti Zionist" counter protests have been quite nauseating - these people really are relaxed about Jew hate.
And some celebrities wrote a letter saying racism is bad

The rioters are having second thoughts because the state has asserted itself. Hundreds of rioters who thought they had immunity due to the numbers of them involved are learning that the courts are going to hold them accountable very swiftly.

Swiftly and steadily across the following months. Those three charmless mugshots led the news bulletins as the poster boys for what will befall hundreds more. Many can, as an official said, 'expect a knock on the door.' Many more will be crying for their Mummy in court. Ruined lives and jail time in overcrowded prisons deserved in full.

Fair play to Starmer, he is really throwing the book at them, just as Cameron did after the 2011 riots. Arrested, put on remand and sentenced to jail with a few days. They will have plenty of time now to reflect on how they have shamed themselves, their families and also their, neighbours, friends and everyone else in their communities.
I bet they now really regret those few hours of caveman behaviour. There must be many others dreading the knock on the door, especially now the newspapers are posting a rouges gallery of camera and cctv mugshots.

They can and do, but when they intercept a boat in the Channel the French won't allow them to take the migrants back to France. Migrants are fine with being caught on the water as their fears of drowning are then over and they can be processed onto benefits more swiftly.

English people now must adapt to their new reality of living in a multicultural society with people 100% contrary to their own culture and every passing year their numbers will increase until they outnumbered the native English people. Wow. Never ever ever they will have a country of their own like they used to in the pass unlike the pakistans and bangladeshes. My advise to them is to start moving into these countries and take hold of some land to create a “New England” in those Asian countries. Those countries must experience what living and respecting people from western societies is like. It is only fair.

It's easy to point out the ridiculousness of R202's "a minority in your own country" view of immigration yet some of the centre left response to ANY concern about immigration is embarrassing and doesn't help.
This week I've seen comments that there is no such thing as British ethnicity, that British ethnicity is just a mix of all the different European nations who invaded Britain and that Britain deserves mass immigration because of the way it colonised the world. Yes most of these people are arseholes desperate for likes on social media but it just creates further division.
During the European championships "progressives" were sharing an image of the England football team highlighting which players were from immigrant families saying SEE IMMIGRATION IS GOOD. It's not that different from the French far right going through the World Cup squad of 1998 and highlighting how many were "foreigners", even though they were born in France and have only ever been French citizens.
I know that public opinion is a lot more nuanced than than either side but the way people are polarising all issues for social media clout is vile.

[quote]If you need immigrants you really should go Asian. Hard workers, love Western culture and adapt right away. Never any problems. Arabs/North African are always a giant pain in the ass.
"Asian" is a very broad classificaiton.
British Indians have contributed massively to British society and the NHS in particular would be nothing without the several generations who have staffed it. There was a huge GP shortage in the late 50s and 60s and Indian doctors moved to the UK, often to working class industrial areas where white British doctors didn't want to work. The BBC's Indian Doctor series covered this. In the 00s there was a major doctor shortage in these areas because many of the doctors who had come over in their 20s and 30s were finally retiring and again white British doctors didn't want to work in those areas.
Filipino immigration has also been a huge positive over the last few years again with the NHS with nurses, health care support workers filling vacancies.
Indians and Filipinos tend to integrate well and there is a sense they contribute far more than they take and with Sikhs and Hindus they are seen as religious but largely secular.
Pakistanis and Bangladeshis however don't have the same perception, mainly because of the increasingly sectarian view of Islam and a perceived reliance on benefits. Amazing to think that just a month ago there were British politicians from supposedly liberal and left wing parties (SNP, Plaid, Lib Dems, Greens) promoting their endorsement by "the Muslim Vote", an online pressure group which promoted anti gay policies.

r218 "Asian" in the US exclusively means East Asians, or what used to be called "Oriental."
by Anonymous | reply 219 | August 20, 2024 2:19 PM |
R218, what you say is partly true, but you must also remember that the current staff shortage in the NHS was caused by Brexit, as many EU doctors and nurses left en masse after the vote was confirmed. The sad thing is that many immigrant communities have made enormous contributions to the UK's economic, scientific, cultural and social development and yet, this is entirely overlooked by most people, who rely on xenophobia in order to explain the extreme inequalities that successive governments have foisted upon the nation's working classes; among which, by the way, there is a very large immigrant contingent.

No, the current shortage of NHS workers was caused by many things, including a compete disinvestment in British people because it is cheaper to get trained foreign staff than to train British born staff, and by that I mean British born staff of all races and classes. Britain leaving the EU didn't stop European people being able to work in Britain, it just made it a bit harder with the paperwork.
Many British Indians and British Africans supported Brexit because white European workers from EU countries were prioritised over those from Commonwealth countries.
But look at the official data of those in work. Indian 77%, higher than the national rate, Asian other (including Filipinos) 71% and Pakistani Bangladeshi at 61%.
70% of British Indian women work compared to 46% of British Pakistani/Bangladeshi.
"White other" would be non British Europeans.
