If Mask had been released a year earlier would Cher have won the Oscar?

I'm reading a book about the diva and it says Mask was shot in Dec. of 1983. If they had finished the post production and made it a December release I could see Cher beating Sally Field for Places in the Heart.

Then Glenn could have won for Fatal Attraction instead of Cher for Moonstruck and Our Sally would have been saved the mocking of her you like me speech.

A large part of the problem was that "Mask" was released on March 8, 1985, a time too early in the year and deadly for Oscar consideration. The studio should have released the movie later in the fall of 1985 so that it would have been fresh in the Academy's mind when considering Oscar nominations.

I'm not saying that Cher would have won, but she would have stood a better chance if the movie had been one the end-of-the-year Oscar contenders.

Sally Field deserved that Oscar. As for Cher, she really is an underrated actress. I was glad she won for Moonstruck.

Cher had three movies out in 1987: Moonstruck, Suspect, and The Witches of Eastwick. She was having a huge year and her win for a hit comedy really should not have surprised anyone.

I played Rocky in several workshops of the musical. It’s a shame it never made it to Broadway. It was Cynthia Weil’s dream. It had some really good songs in it. I wonder if Barry & Cynthia wrote it hoping Cher would do it.

Sally and Cher -- love them both so I any vote would be based on emotion which isn't fair to the performances.

All I know is that movie had a major impact on me when I was little.

Rocky Dennis was a lovely human being.
