The Substitute (1993) is a fairly star-studded affair that was originally intended to spark a new Paramount thriller/horror franchise about a murdering psycho substitute teacher. Spolier: it didn’t make the grade. Directed by Martin Donovan and written by David S. Goyer (using the pseudonym Cynthia Verlaine!), it’s a pretty classy flick given the teacher’s salary TV movie budget, but it mostly gets a pass for the excellent Amanda Donohoe tour-de-force, and for being Mark Wahlberg’s (aka Marky Mark) first acting gig.
PS. Not to be confused with the Tom Berenger/Treat Williams movies.
