This is exactly what they did for Vance right before the announcement was made.
Andy Beshear getting additional security detail as he waits for Kamala to announce him as VP

Both Beshear and Shapiro would be terrific. I think Beshear might be a little bit safer as a choice, but I'll be pleased if she chooses either one.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 1, 2024 4:25 AM |
And he knows how to pronounce “Louisville” correctly.
Unlike Jimmy Rancid
by Anonymous | reply 3 | August 1, 2024 4:27 AM |
Beshear doesn't have the same baggage as Shapiro. The sexual harassment cover-up would become a major distraction for Harris's campaign, as well as his comparing the campus protesters to the KKK. He also doesn't have the best relationship with unions.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 1, 2024 4:32 AM |
Beshear is kind of random and doesn't necessarily bring any wattage to the ticket. He's an Al Gore.

He balances her out and gives her more appeal to the South and Midwest. What else does Shapiro bring to the ticket besides possibly giving her PA? Again, Biden/Harris won PA in 2020, and she's now tied with Trump in most recent polls.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | August 1, 2024 4:48 AM |
I can't believe we're talking about baggage when Trump is right there.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 1, 2024 5:00 AM |
Beshear and Shapiro were AGs of KY and PA respectively before becoming governors. They share that experience with Harris who was of course AG of CA.

[quote] Beshear and Shapiro were AGs of KY and PA respectively before becoming governors. They share that experience with Harris who was of course AG of CA.
This is why I always felt the vice presidential race was between those two and not Kelly and Shapiro. Beshear also said Harris called him that Sunday to ask for his endorsement after Biden dropped out of the race. He was among the first to endorse her publicly in the media. Unsurprisingly, he went to Georgia to campaign for her this week, and she held her first official rally in Atlanta yesterday.
He gives a wholesome Mr. Rogers family guy appeal and has a 61% approval rating among liberals, moderates, and conservatives in ruby-red Kentucky. Beshear balances out Harris's San Francisco liberalism. With Shapiro on the ticket, the ticket will scream "coastal elite" among voters in the flyover states.

I volunteer to protect Beshear's family jewels.

Beshear tore Vance a new one for Kentucky. He said Vance shows distain for them and everyone like them and that he was not from there.

Beshear knows how to get under Vance's skin.

[quote] Beshear knows how to get under Vance's skin.
True. I think out of all the attacks that Vance has received from the others on the VP list, he only responded back to Beshear's.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 1, 2024 5:44 AM |
They better.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | August 1, 2024 5:51 AM |
I'm assuming he's more likely to not overshadow or overpower her in any - unlike especially Shapiro but also the older guys with more gravitas, like Walz and Kelly. Pete's too big a risk. And I personally think Shapiro should not be chosen because of his comments about the protests.
So it sounds right that it's Beshear, though I think he's a little awkward. Like she has done, he can grow into the role and he won't age out as soon as the others.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | August 1, 2024 5:52 AM |
* overpower her in any way
by Anonymous | reply 18 | August 1, 2024 5:53 AM |
Ugh I was hoping she'd go with Kelly or Shapiro. At least Kelly would help her gun control message and get her Hispanic and Sun Belt votes.
Beshear looks the part but he won't help her expand the electoral map.
Also, let's face it the optics won't be great. Beshear is a political nepo baby and Vance grew up with next to nothing.
He's arguably the most popular Democratic governor and in a red state to boot. Beshear is young and if I were him, I would get some distance and run on a great gubernatorial record in 2028.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 1, 2024 5:55 AM |
R6: I don't think she even needs Shapiro to win Pennsylvania. She and Trump are now tied in Pennsylvania.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 1, 2024 5:56 AM |
I'm still hoping for Kelly.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | August 1, 2024 6:14 AM |
If Buttigieg wasn’t in the Biden administration, he’d be a lock for the number two slot. She can’t have too much of the Biden administration on the ticket.
Wes Moore is way too new. This country isn’t voting for an all black ticket anytime soon to say the least.
If Whitmer weren’t a woman, she’d have the number two slot in the bag. No doubt she and Gavin are the frontrunners in 2028.

R22 Kamala will be running for election in 28.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 1, 2024 6:19 AM |
Pete is the only one I trust for the job. Don't turn me off, Kamala.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 1, 2024 6:43 AM |
Will she pick Gilligan or the Skipper?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 1, 2024 7:12 AM |
Still rooting for Pete but I am OK with Beshear. I still think Pete could out preform Bashear not just in a debate, but in actual skill of getting a job done.
At least he is younger than the old folks everyone wanted. Kamala needed that on her ticket to keep voters especially younger voters interested in voting for her. Someone they can relate to without grey hair and still looks like he has a lot of energy.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 1, 2024 8:05 AM |
I’m fine with whomever she picks.

Pete has yet to demonstrate his executive leadership ability. He's a great spokesman and surrogate but is lacking what is needed to be VP.

Yes, but in Kentucky! A red state of no consequence. He is not known on the national stage. He would be a "DEI" hire.

[quote]At least Kelly would help her gun control message and get her Hispanic and Sun Belt votes.
Gun control isn’t a winning electoral issue for Democrats. Not saying it isn’t important or Democrats shouldn’t pursue legislation about it. But campaigning on gun control doesn’t gain any votes, and it turns off people who are hunters…many of whom reside in rust belt states like PA, MI, and WI.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 1, 2024 4:18 PM |
[quote] Beshear is kind of random and doesn't necessarily bring any wattage to the ticket. He's an Al Gore.
Which was an enormously successful choice, if you recall.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 1, 2024 5:24 PM |
R38 Kelly is an avid gun enthusiast and very pro-hunter. He's the perfect guy to communicate a common sense gun reform platform. Make it crystal clear that we aren't coming for hunters, we aren't coming for the handgun or shotgun you have to protect your home, this is about military style weapons that can kill dozens of people in minutes. Those are not remotely needed for hunting or for home defense. Silver spoon Dump and bossy bottom Vance will look like total sissies with Kelly on the ticket.

She shouldn’t talk about gun control at all. It doesn’t help Democrats at the ballot box.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 1, 2024 6:28 PM |
R39: Beshear hugs people when the weather is bad. How does that make you a great politician? Also, he's a massive nepo baby. His first job was at daddy's law firm and he became Governor on dad's coattails.

by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 1, 2024 6:45 PM |
Every thing they’ve done this far has been pitch perfect. I’m sure they’ll select the right VP based on the right factors. We’re spoiled with great choices! Unlike the idiots of the GOP.

What R28 said. It doesn't matter that Beshear can't turn KY itself blue; he's from a rural Appalachian state and can appeal to rural Pennsylvanians, Wisconsinites, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 1, 2024 7:02 PM |
A Kentucky hick appeals more to West Virginia and Ohio, neither of which is voting Blue.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 1, 2024 7:06 PM |
R43, yeah, it does. Most Americans want to ban assault weapons
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 1, 2024 7:09 PM |
R38 agreed I have two older buddies in their early 50s who are democrats here is SoCal. They are originally from the Midwest. They are big hunters and gun people. Generally they don’t like any talk of gun control. They also both really hate Trump and how he has turned politics into a circus.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 1, 2024 7:10 PM |
R59 They only care so far as a pollster or statistician asking them about it. It doesn’t impact a vote. The same Frau republican mom who cares about gun control is going to vote R. We would need a sandy hook to occur the day before the election. I know it’s awful for me to be so cynical. Americans have normalized gun violence and many just see it as part of the culture.

You suffered the comparison to "that Hillbilly" and gave the White House to Bush by refusing Clinton's offer to campaign on your behalf. You were boring and had no charisma. I don't want Beshear to hand the White House back to the Republicans like you did.

Which is why Pete is a better choice. Also, outside of the DL, annalist have noted Pete is experiencing a grass roots push for VP. You know, for the non-gays that see what a good pick he will be.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 2, 2024 12:40 AM |
All this talk about a VP delivering a state is pure BS. Those states will go whichever way they are leaning regardless of whether the VP comes from there.

I don't see any indication that Beshear would be like Gore in that respect. The only similarity they share is that both are from southern political dynasties. Despite his wholesome disposition, Beshear is a fighter who has defeated two MAGAt candidates supported by Trump and McConnell.
We can all agree that America would've been a much better place under Al Gore than under George W. Bush.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | August 2, 2024 4:14 AM |
I agree, R61.
Kentucky might surprise us.
After all, they voted for a Democratic Governor.
If he's that popular in a very Red State, then it would stand to reason that Kentucky might possibly go blue just for Andy Beshear to become Vice-President of the United States.
I think that for Kentuckians, it definitely would be a matter of the "home town boy" making good.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | August 2, 2024 4:20 AM |
R61, Oh please, anyone who was going to vote for Kamala is not going to sit it out just because the VP was not from their state. If you believe that would happen then it's Kamala who is a weak candidate.

I think it was meant more in a positive sense: people who otherwise might not be bothered to vote may feel inspired to do so when a governor from their state is on the ticket.
