The First Lady

After the Vairst Letty and Dr. Jill Biden and with the prospect of a man in the position, I think it’s time to retire the title “First Lady” rather than try to adapt with “First Gentleman.”

It’s been pretty silly for a while now.

We can just refer to the President’s wife or husband or special friend.

by Anonymousreply 37July 31, 2024 3:16 PM

The First Spouse works just fine and is more in line with current social mores anyway.

by Anonymousreply 1July 30, 2024 1:27 PM

I too find it dated. They're not elected, so why this special appellation? They're no different than any other civil servant's spouse.

by Anonymousreply 2July 30, 2024 1:29 PM

So the Fat OP (her official title) presumes to eliminate historic American conventions.

Check your pronouns. These people are dangerous.

by Anonymousreply 3July 30, 2024 1:30 PM

First Lady and First Gentleman are fine. It gives them an identity other than spouse. Which is fair for all they do. Why should it change? Do you hate everything about the United States?

by Anonymousreply 4July 30, 2024 1:31 PM

Shouldn't you be out there on the ledge somewhere, R3, screaming into the void?

by Anonymousreply 5July 30, 2024 1:31 PM

Or, maybe, bump an old Froy/Zane thread? You know you want to.

by Anonymousreply 6July 30, 2024 1:32 PM

i side with R4, considering we address them as "Mister/Madame president" gendering and formalizing the role is fine. Also, maybe let's not worry about it much

by Anonymousreply 7July 30, 2024 1:50 PM

In Australia and New Zealand we say "the First Bloke". It works for us.

On the other hand, we don't tend to say First Lady. It's just the PM's wife (or currently, his fiancee. Yes, we can elect people who live together unmarried!!!).

by Anonymousreply 8July 30, 2024 2:53 PM

America did that once and he was a ponce and was by the way, the worst president ever

by Anonymousreply 9July 30, 2024 2:56 PM

What’s wrong with you, OP?

by Anonymousreply 10July 30, 2024 9:18 PM

IMO, it's silly. The spouse of the POTUS shouldn't even have an official role. Let him or her go about their lives. Yes, live in the White House, but forget trying to have a pet project (Just Say No to Drugs, Be Best). So stupid.

by Anonymousreply 11July 30, 2024 9:22 PM

I like First Mate. It's got a manly ring to it. Naval, even. But not really.

by Anonymousreply 12July 30, 2024 9:35 PM

What is so hard about "adapting" to First Gentleman?

If we can have a whore as first lady, we can surely cope with a first gentleman

To those who believe we shouldn't honor the President's spouse because they do anything or "have an official role", please return to remedial US history for a primer on First Ladies and all they have accomplished. Some have done a great deal; others not so much.

by Anonymousreply 13July 30, 2024 9:46 PM

First Doug

by Anonymousreply 14July 30, 2024 9:57 PM

First Gentleman sounds ridiculous. We don’t refer to people as “gentleman” anymore.

Perhaps it’s not really any more ridiculous than First Lady, but we’re used to that.

Yes, we CAN try to get used to First Gentleman. Or, we can take the opportunity to drop the whole misbegotten mess.

You know my vote.

by Anonymousreply 15July 30, 2024 10:05 PM

YOU CAN ALL GO FUCK YOURSELVES, EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU.

by Anonymousreply 16July 30, 2024 10:12 PM

PhDs who insist on be called “Doctor” socially are pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 21July 30, 2024 10:44 PM

OP, yeah, we do. You just hang out in the gutter or something like that.

by Anonymousreply 22July 30, 2024 10:47 PM

I like the sound of Lady Chasten.

by Anonymousreply 23July 30, 2024 11:01 PM

Doug Emhoff likes "First Dude."

by Anonymousreply 24July 30, 2024 11:26 PM

Boy, I can see why "Mr. President" was such a huge flop. That's just awful.

[quote]We don’t refer to people as “gentleman” anymore.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have an answer.

by Anonymousreply 28July 31, 2024 1:20 AM

yeah, gentleman is a VERY common term

by Anonymousreply 29July 31, 2024 3:06 AM

It’s more of an idiom in today’s usage in certain limited situations—meetings, car races. You would not describe someone as a gentleman.

by Anonymousreply 30July 31, 2024 3:14 AM

Let me suggest some gender-neutral terms:

President Fucker

Official Orgasm Inducer

Legal Bedmate

by Anonymousreply 31July 31, 2024 3:55 AM

I think when Kamala is president, her husband should be referred to as Mr Harris.

by Anonymousreply 32July 31, 2024 3:57 AM

I hope Mr Harris has the nads to stick it out with her when she becomes the most famous woman in the world.

by Anonymousreply 33July 31, 2024 4:06 AM

He’s running her social media profile, I think he’s up to it

by Anonymousreply 34July 31, 2024 12:02 PM

[quote] think when Kamala is president, her husband should be referred to as Mr Harris.

Even though that’s not his name?

by Anonymousreply 35July 31, 2024 12:22 PM

Keep the title as is. And First Gentleman is great.

"First Spouse?' No thank you. Enough of the gender neutral!

by Anonymousreply 36July 31, 2024 2:09 PM

spouse is a really old word, and has been in use for centuries, seems normal to me
