Josh Hartnett Shares Stalking Incidents Influenced His Decision To Walk Away From Hollywood
Actor Josh Hartnett has revealed why he chose to turn down two superhero movie roles at a time when he seemed destined for superstardom.
Hartnett, who stars in M Night Shyamalan’s forthcoming psychological thriller, Trap, told the UK’s Guardian newspaper that the amount of attention he was receiving had a part to play in his decision to walk away from Hollywood at the peak of his popularity. He said:
“People’s attention to me at the time was borderline unhealthy. There were incidents. People showed up at my house. People that were stalking me.” At one point, he revealed, “a guy showed up at one of my premieres with a gun, claiming to be my father. He ended up in prison.”
“There were lots of things. It was a weird time. And I wasn’t going to be grist for the mill.”
Hartnett revealed that, as well as twice turning down the role of Superman, he engaged in chats with director Christopher Nolan about Batman, a role that eventually went to Christian Bale:
“I just didn’t want my life to be swallowed up by my work. And there was a notion at that time you just kind of give it all up. And you saw what happened to some people back then. They got obliterated by it. I didn’t want that for myself.”
Hartnett revealed his regret that he didn’t work with Nolan at the time, something he rectified with his appearance as a nuclear scientist in Nolan’s Oscar winner Oppenheimer. He said:
“I recognise the missed opportunity to work with a guy like Chris. And I’ve figured out that as much as you’re worried about curating your career to things you’re interested in, I don’t believe that’s the most important thing any more. It’s about finding people who you really trust.”

I love Josh and I think he's incredibly hot, but I really hope that he's not trying to re-write history.
Because my understanding is that he had a major drug problem at the time, and he needed a break from Hollywood.

Prancing around with Aaron Paul in their underwear in that Black Mirror episode…

They are both stationed in space, and there are a handful of scenes where they are out of uniform and in underwear and HAWT.

I just watched him on a Jamie Oliver show, he came across as soft spoken and reserved.

The stalking caused the massive drug addiction!

Heroin addiction also played a role, Josh

Looking forward to seeing Trap - Shamalyan is fun when he isn't trying to be self-serious.

So did he really turn down the Superman role or was it just his drug addiction that lost him the part?

R18 He is much better actor than Ben but just couldn’t say no to them drugs. I told him why don’t you just become a drunk like Ben.

I decided not to do big studio fare and focus more on independent films. I wanted to cut my teeth in the way that I thought was more in line with my understanding of what a good film would be. To journalists at the time that looked like stepping away from the brass ring. Why would I do that? The press was severe. It was like I was crazy. That became the dominant narrative....I felt like an adult at that age, but really, your brain isn’t even fully formed. You’re trying to take in the world’s opinions of you and register that within yourself. I needed space to just be me.

This thread popped up on my new threads for some reason. I didn't even realize I was resurrecting it. Don't be such a piss ant.

Bullshit.
He had PBDS - Post "Black Dahlia" Syndrome.
Holy shit, BD was jaw-dropping bad, and not in a good way, especially the last 1/2 hour.
And Hartnett's performance had all the animation of the 10lb bag of powdered cement leaning against the corner of my garage.
In fairness, though, everybody put in a bad performance in BD and appearing in that would chase anybody out of the business for a while.
Hartnett's a hunk, though, and I saw from the "Trap" trailer that he can act.

We have no idea, since there is no character named "Cornelia" in the original Planet of the Apes movies.

You know, I take it back.
Not what I posted about Black Dahlia, but my "Bullshit" about him being stalked.
If he says he was, I don't doubt him. And being famous is no walk in the park.

He plays the lead character in the excellent 2006 film, Lucky Number Slevin. With Lucy Liu, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, and Stanley Tucci. See it you you haven't yet.

Lucky Number Slevin is a great movie. I bought the DVD when it came out and watched it over and over again. I don't know what genre you'd call it. It's a like fun 70s crime thriller.

Slevin is indeed a fun movie. I remember different wallpapers and that Josh spends a lot of time only with a towel on, which, alas, doesn’t fall. Very unTechkovian.
I think he is very hot and seems a nice person. Good for him to have a slower career, whatever the reason.
