I’ll start:
Jennifer Aniston v. Reese Witherspoon

Jennifer Aniston.
Meryl Streep or Glenn Close
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 29, 2024 5:13 AM |
Meryl
Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise? (that is a stumper)
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 29, 2024 5:21 AM |
Meryl
Matt Damon or Ben Affleck
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 29, 2024 5:21 AM |
I’ll answer R2 with Cruise, and pose the Damon/Affleck question again.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 29, 2024 5:22 AM |
Reese has an Oscar
Regardless of box office, Meryl is a legend. Those men...not so much.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 29, 2024 5:26 AM |
Matt Damon was bigger in the beginning with Saving Private Ryan, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Bourne movies. But now Ben is bigger because he is more of a tabloid figure.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 29, 2024 5:32 AM |
Denzel Washington v. Will Smith
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 29, 2024 5:36 AM |
Reese made her name as a film actress so that usually wins over a TV actress of any kind
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 29, 2024 5:37 AM |
Even though I wasn't a fan, FRIENDS is one of the most well known shows ever. So that makes Aniston bigger.
Denzel is the better actor but Will Smith is (was?) the bigger star
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 29, 2024 5:40 AM |
The name of the show was FRIENDS, r9, not FRIEND.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 29, 2024 5:48 AM |
Brendad Ickson vs. Mamie Van Doren
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 29, 2024 5:56 AM |
Faye Dunaway or Jane Fonda?
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 29, 2024 6:01 AM |
No one compares to me. I’ve been through the most.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 29, 2024 6:03 AM |
I’d still say Aniston is the bigger star.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 29, 2024 6:06 AM |
Harry Townes vs Alfred Ryder.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 29, 2024 6:10 AM |
Chrissy Metz vs. Oprah for most of the 1980s?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 29, 2024 6:11 AM |
I spanned all the decades. Oprah came in waves.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 29, 2024 6:22 AM |
While Reese doesn't have a ton of range, she is the superior actress. Jen is a celebrity; not an actor. Jen has milked her personal life for every possible drop of drama and in that sense she is the bigger star in the pop culture world. The one thing they have in common is that they're both beloved by female audiences.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 30, 2024 1:27 AM |
Harrison Ford or Tom Hanks?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | July 30, 2024 1:36 AM |
Hanks
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 30, 2024 2:29 AM |
Frances McDormand or Streep
McDormand. More Oscar’s and more well known recent movies.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 30, 2024 2:32 AM |
James Marsden or James Franco?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 30, 2024 2:34 AM |
Bette Midler or Streisand.
Midler. Hocus Pocus and First Wives Club are beloved among modern day audiences
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 30, 2024 2:34 AM |
I'm gonna be that guy and point out that OP said biggest "STAR," not most proficient or accomplished actor.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 30, 2024 2:37 AM |
r21 her name recognition is way less than Streep's so I am going to disagree

Chris Pine
Ryan Gosling or Glen Powell?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 30, 2024 5:28 AM |
Aniston. It makes little sense, but she's more likable. Reese has the whole DUI thing and she's a jerk. J has a better reputation.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 30, 2024 5:35 AM |
Gosling
Which Helmsworth is the biggest star?
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 30, 2024 5:36 AM |
Chris, in a walk. He has the bigger hits, and even his flops are bigger than anything Liam has done in forever. (Sorry, Luke).
Character actress battle royale: Margo Martindale or Ann Dowd?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 30, 2024 5:38 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 30, 2024 5:38 AM |
Francie Swift or Elizabeth Marvel?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 30, 2024 6:52 AM |
R23 Babs took down Artha in celebrity deathmatch . She will have Midler down without raising a well manicured finger but by simply blinding her with the glow of her to Oscars.

She is forever an icon of political defiance. She is an A list actress sure but also the face of contemporary Hollywood’s alliance with liberalism. She also was a sex symbol at one time. Not to mention her famous Hollywood family.

Shirley Jones. Oscar winner for "Elmer Gantry" who was in other very good movies, including "The Music Man" and "Oklahoma!" The Florence Henderson's only starring role in a movie was in the horrible flop "Song of Norway." Florence Henderson had "The Brady Bunch" on TV but Shirley had "The Partridge Family."
by Anonymous | reply 176 | August 3, 2024 6:03 AM |
Yet many more people have seen the Brady Bunch over the last five decades than all of Shirley Jones movies combined. The Brady Bunch was in constant rerun for decades, the show even had specials as well as 2 popular two theatrical based on the characters. The Brady's are far more iconic than the Partridges and even the other BB cast members who went on to do nothing afterwards are still recognized for that show alone.

Murphy WAS a huge star R224 Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F wasn't released in theaters while Smith's Bad Boys: Ride or Die has pulled in $200M in domestic box office. Most of Murphy's films over the last 3 decades have been poorly received and were not successful at the box office: Norbit, Meet Dave, Imagine That, Tower Heist, The Haunted Mansion, Daddy Day Care, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Bowfinger, Life, Holy Man, Showtime, Vampire in Brooklyn . . .He's been the voice of Shrek but most of his movies are dreck!

R225 Dreamsgirls, Norbit, Nutty Professor, Black Dolemite. I agree he has been in a lot of duds since the 90s but he had a renaissance like career resurgence in the aughts and his Netflix comedies as of lately have been extremely successful.

I think some of you older people think that Netflix original films of the past 7 years are movies that couldn’t find a distributor or the big studios didn’t want them. They are produced by Netflix because Netflix is investing in original content. The stars of these films aren’t taking pay cuts. In fact many of them are partaking lucrative multiple movie deals. Streaming is the future. Hollywood traditional theaters to rental to streaming isn’t sustainable. People want to watch their shit at home with a handful of unique exceptions.

by Anonymous | reply 234 | August 4, 2024 11:18 PM |
Among people under fifty, Bette is a bigger star, yes. Hello Dolly! on Broadway. First Wives Club and Hocus Pocus are HUGE among the younger generations.
Gays and Pre Gen X'ers will always love Streisand, but crossover appeal has diminished greatly the last two decades, while Bette's had increased.
Remember, it's not the best entertainer, it's who is the bigger star.
by Anonymous | reply 235 | August 4, 2024 11:19 PM |
Barbera Streisand is beyond an A list star. She is a cultural icon at this point. You have stars and then you have people like Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Michael Jackson. I’m can’t think of a movie star with that level of fame. Barbers Streisand is the next tier after them.
Babs, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, Clint Eastwood, Tom Hanks. Michael Jordan, Babe Ruth.
These are more than just STAHS. They are cultural icons. Bette is gay cultural icon and A list for sure but not on the same tier as the aforementioned list of celebrities.

R257, if you've ever watched her on The View you'd see her salivate every time an A-Lister comes on the show. She's desperate to be back in the fold. They devoted an entire show to the godawful (pun intended) Sister Act II most likely because she's been trying to get funding for Sister Act III but no one's stupid enough to bite.
Lastly, the only reason she is on The View is because she had been black-balled (cancelled) in the industry and she couldn't find work. Barbara (not Barbera) Walters was kind enough to offer her the gig as moderator.
Whoopi is an 80s throwback. VIOLA IS THE BIGGER STAR.

Aniston definitely. Anniston had numerous high paying gigs:$25M Murder Mystery 2, $45M Murder Mystery (2019) $26M We're the Millers, $25M Just Go with It, $28M The Break-Up . . .
by Anonymous | reply 305 | August 9, 2024 10:07 PM |
I don’t know. For some reason SJP just seems more well known. Maybe it’s the name. Just has a better punch to it.
by Anonymous | reply 306 | August 9, 2024 11:25 PM |
To my mind R306 it is clearly Anniston. Friends was a huge success and ran on network television for 10 years and has been hugely popular in syndication for decades. Each of the Friends cast members has been paid $20M a year in residuals for the last 2 decades. Sex in the City had six seasons on HBO. After friends Aniston had a successful film career and made more money for one film than SJP probably made in her entire career.
by Anonymous | reply 307 | August 10, 2024 1:09 AM |
R307 She didn’t make 20 mil per episode but she made a shit ton of money from Sex and the City, and the franchise’s films. She wasn’t just star, she was also EP. Let’s not forget SJP was a working film actress in the 90s too. I’ll admit Aniston has made more money but something about SJP feels more iconic. I think 100 years from now SJP will be remembered by pop culture while Jennifer Aniston won’t.
by Anonymous | reply 308 | August 10, 2024 1:24 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 309 | August 10, 2024 1:25 AM |
R309 It's not funny' it's incorrect.
Jennifer Aniston / Net worth 320 million USD
Aniston receives $20M per year from reruns alone which started in 2000. Do the math!
SJP's salary combined salary for the 2 Sex in the City movies was $35M. Aniston made $45M plus $20M+back end for 2019 Netflix film Murder Mystery. Parker could never command a salary anywhere near that.
And don't forget the Rachel

Ann Miller for the simple fact her career carried over many decades while Eleanor's fizzled in the mid 40s.
