Watch Celine Dion's entire performance at the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony
I know that Celine's performance was covered in the previous Olympic thread. However, for those who have not seen Celine perform, it's mind-blowing.
Take a moment to see this powerhouse performance of Edith Piaf’s 'Hymne à L’amour' (Hymn to Love).
Celine, welcome back to the world stage! C'est Magnifique!

Brilliant. One of the greatest ever.

I never hated her but I often found her ridiculous, particularly at the peak of her popularity. Having read about what she's been going through healthwise, this is pretty remarkable. Wishing her all the best.

I've never been a fan of her material - I wish she did some music outside of the Adult Contemporary/MOR genre when she was at her peak - but she is a tremendously talented individual and a lovely person.

Celine delivered mondo beyondo.
The Olympic torch ascending in the balloon was spectacular too.

^^^ can you sing like that?

I'm confused by this performance, given she could barely squeak out a note during the Amazon Prime documentary.

She's always better when singing in French.

I think she may be crayzee but when she puts it together she is an astounding talent.

I love Celine Dion but it was playback, the same full playback as in the rehearsal. Sorry guys. If you want live singing these days, you have to go to the opera.

Her usual vulgar, heartless, OCD performance, except now as a sainted victim that lifts her much higher than her widowhood.
Thanks so much OP, you little French slogan dropper, you.

Watch the video at R11. Sheesh.
BREAKING: Whitney Houston's Star-Spangled Banner ... was also lip synched.

I don't really care if it was lip-syncd as long as she sang it FOR this Olympics, which I believe. Her voice is near peak. It's magnificent.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | August 4, 2024 9:28 PM

Perhaps this is a bad time to tell you that it was auto-tuned also.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | August 5, 2024 9:10 AM

No, I don't believe it was auto-tuned. I know that when I hear it.

There's some quotes in the French press saying that Celine specifically asked to sing it naturally. Who knows what's really true?

R22 people with ears know what's true. Watch the video, please. Again, I like Dion. It still wasn't live.

Watch the video, R21. It was pitch-corrected. Sorry to burst your bubble. Show business is full of liars.

I like Celine, but her voice was pitch-corrected (and lip synched). It's hard to tell if it's "near peak."
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 5, 2024 5:10 PM

It was actually Celine, it was a lab-grown clone. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I hear nothing artificial in her voice.

That woman has pipes. Yet, Taylor Swift is more popular and richer and her voice is weak in comparison.

Whitney Houston was not really a ballad singer.

R31. Taylor Swift should never be mentioned in the same sentence with great singers.

R32 Most of her signature songs are ballads as well as the albums. I wanna dance and How will I know aren’t and they’re the same dam song lol.

Her Olympics performance was lip synced and pitch corrected, but I applaud her for doing the song straight without any show-off caterwauling and other vocal tricks. She did the song justice.
I LOVE Elaine Page doing the English lyric version " If You Love Me". This is a grand theatrical diva performance:
(BTW note how much she looks like later career Doris Day here)

Partner and I watched the Celine Dion biopic on Amazon today. It was extremely difficult. We've never been big fans but we adore her now as a person. This was by no means a slickly produced vanity project and I'm stunned that she or her management allowed this to air. We then watched her Paris performance, which was amazing, regardless of whether it was lip-synched or whatever. The biopic was quite depressing. You can "Oh, Mary!" me all you want. I don't watch much TV and am mostly ignorant about pop culture. Spent my entire adult life doing medical research. This woman is not well and it's unlikely she'll get much better. Didn't get the sense that the purpose of this program was to garner empathy. She's already rich and famous and well loved. The only thing I got out of this is that I'm going to spend more time with my next-door neighbor who has MS.

Yes, of course it was lip synced. No way the IOC was going to risk live vocals atop the Eiffel Tower and somehow make that work both for the live and broadcast audience. Gaga was lip syncing earlier in the opening ceremony, too.
That said, unless I'm mistaken, this is a newly recorded vocal that Celine laid down for this performance. And that alone, after everything she's been through, is hugely impressive. I'm not an easy crier and I'll admit it -- cliches and all (Piaf! Atop the Eiffel Tower!) -- brought me to tears.
This moment was a triumph for Celine. Full stop.

She sang it as Piaf sang it, which reined in some of the vocal acrobatics Celine would have normally done.
The restrained style (for her) let the lyrics and music shine and it wasn’t all about her powerhouse voice.
It was perfect for the time and place.

you can clearly hear her breath hitting the mic naturally, it isn't lip synced. you wouldn't hear the breath so prominent in a studio recording.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | August 14, 2024 9:02 AM

R45 i mean the breath on words, not in between
by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 14, 2024 9:03 AM

r45 - if you want to believe that, go ahead. I'm not gonna spoil your fun except to say that...
... you're wrong. She was lip syncing.
(I still think it was a glorious performance and the absolute highlight of the opening ceremonies.)

Two things can be true at once:
It was lip synced
AND it was a glorious performance.
