Watch Celine Dion's entire performance at the Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony

I know that Celine's performance was covered in the previous Olympic thread. However, for those who have not seen Celine perform, it's mind-blowing.

Take a moment to see this powerhouse performance of Edith Piaf’s 'Hymne à L’amour' (Hymn to Love).

Celine, welcome back to the world stage! C'est Magnifique!

The bitch delivered.

by Anonymousreply 1July 28, 2024 9:12 PM

Brilliant. One of the greatest ever.

by Anonymousreply 2July 28, 2024 9:13 PM

I never hated her but I often found her ridiculous, particularly at the peak of her popularity. Having read about what she's been going through healthwise, this is pretty remarkable. Wishing her all the best.

by Anonymousreply 3July 28, 2024 9:15 PM

I've never been a fan of her material - I wish she did some music outside of the Adult Contemporary/MOR genre when she was at her peak - but she is a tremendously talented individual and a lovely person.

by Anonymousreply 4July 28, 2024 9:29 PM

Celine delivered mondo beyondo.

The Olympic torch ascending in the balloon was spectacular too.

by Anonymousreply 5July 28, 2024 9:41 PM

I wish my health problems would miraculously go away.

by Anonymousreply 6July 28, 2024 9:48 PM

^^^ can you sing like that?

by Anonymousreply 7July 28, 2024 9:48 PM

I'm confused by this performance, given she could barely squeak out a note during the Amazon Prime documentary.

by Anonymousreply 8July 28, 2024 10:23 PM

She's always better when singing in French.

by Anonymousreply 9July 28, 2024 10:24 PM

I think she may be crayzee but when she puts it together she is an astounding talent.

by Anonymousreply 10July 28, 2024 10:25 PM

I love Celine Dion but it was playback, the same full playback as in the rehearsal. Sorry guys. If you want live singing these days, you have to go to the opera.

Her usual vulgar, heartless, OCD performance, except now as a sainted victim that lifts her much higher than her widowhood.

Thanks so much OP, you little French slogan dropper, you.

Does anyone know how to get vomit out of a raw silk shirt?

by Anonymousreply 12August 4, 2024 4:33 PM

R3 Mariah

by Anonymousreply 13August 4, 2024 4:36 PM

I still have this song in my head a week later.

by Anonymousreply 14August 4, 2024 4:48 PM

Should've been Grace Jones up there singing La Vie en Rose, but this was good too.

by Anonymousreply 15August 4, 2024 5:26 PM

Yep, it was lip sync'd.

by Anonymousreply 16August 4, 2024 8:23 PM

Was not lip synced- sheesh.

by Anonymousreply 17August 4, 2024 9:05 PM

Watch the video at R11. Sheesh.

BREAKING: Whitney Houston's Star-Spangled Banner ... was also lip synched.

by Anonymousreply 18August 4, 2024 9:10 PM

I don't really care if it was lip-syncd as long as she sang it FOR this Olympics, which I believe. Her voice is near peak. It's magnificent.

by Anonymousreply 19August 4, 2024 9:28 PM

Perhaps this is a bad time to tell you that it was auto-tuned also.

by Anonymousreply 20August 5, 2024 9:10 AM

No, I don't believe it was auto-tuned. I know that when I hear it.

by Anonymousreply 21August 5, 2024 10:15 AM

There's some quotes in the French press saying that Celine specifically asked to sing it naturally. Who knows what's really true?

by Anonymousreply 22August 5, 2024 10:16 AM

R22 people with ears know what's true. Watch the video, please. Again, I like Dion. It still wasn't live.

by Anonymousreply 23August 5, 2024 1:00 PM

Watch the video, R21. It was pitch-corrected. Sorry to burst your bubble. Show business is full of liars.

by Anonymousreply 24August 5, 2024 2:10 PM

[quote] Her voice is near peak. It's magnificent.

I like Celine, but her voice was pitch-corrected (and lip synched). It's hard to tell if it's "near peak."

by Anonymousreply 25August 5, 2024 5:10 PM

It was actually Celine, it was a lab-grown clone. Sorry to burst your bubble.

by Anonymousreply 26August 5, 2024 9:47 PM

I hear nothing artificial in her voice.

by Anonymousreply 27August 5, 2024 9:53 PM

Celine is da greatust singah in da wurld.

by Anonymousreply 28August 14, 2024 2:40 AM

After Whitney she might very well be the best female ballad singer of all time.

by Anonymousreply 29August 14, 2024 2:56 AM

Céline Dion fittings at Dior for the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

That woman has pipes. Yet, Taylor Swift is more popular and richer and her voice is weak in comparison.

by Anonymousreply 31August 14, 2024 4:14 AM

[quote]After Whitney she might very well be the best female ballad singer of all time.

Whitney Houston was not really a ballad singer.

by Anonymousreply 32August 14, 2024 4:34 AM

R31. Taylor Swift should never be mentioned in the same sentence with great singers.

by Anonymousreply 33August 14, 2024 4:35 AM

R32 Most of her signature songs are ballads as well as the albums. I wanna dance and How will I know aren’t and they’re the same dam song lol.

by Anonymousreply 34August 14, 2024 4:37 AM

Her Olympics performance was lip synced and pitch corrected, but I applaud her for doing the song straight without any show-off caterwauling and other vocal tricks. She did the song justice.

I LOVE Elaine Page doing the English lyric version " If You Love Me". This is a grand theatrical diva performance:

(BTW note how much she looks like later career Doris Day here)

Dear lord, give it a rest. We heard you the first hundred times.

by Anonymousreply 36August 14, 2024 5:07 AM

For the idiot at R36: R35 is my first post on this thread.

by Anonymousreply 37August 14, 2024 5:15 AM

[quote] on this thread

Quite.

by Anonymousreply 38August 14, 2024 5:17 AM

I found it reductive.

by Anonymousreply 39August 14, 2024 5:24 AM

Perhaps I meant you (plural), r37, since you were repeating something posted so many times.

by Anonymousreply 40August 14, 2024 5:51 AM

I don’t understand why someone would say Whitney Houston is not really a ballad singer.

by Anonymousreply 41August 14, 2024 6:12 AM

Partner and I watched the Celine Dion biopic on Amazon today. It was extremely difficult. We've never been big fans but we adore her now as a person. This was by no means a slickly produced vanity project and I'm stunned that she or her management allowed this to air. We then watched her Paris performance, which was amazing, regardless of whether it was lip-synched or whatever. The biopic was quite depressing. You can "Oh, Mary!" me all you want. I don't watch much TV and am mostly ignorant about pop culture. Spent my entire adult life doing medical research. This woman is not well and it's unlikely she'll get much better. Didn't get the sense that the purpose of this program was to garner empathy. She's already rich and famous and well loved. The only thing I got out of this is that I'm going to spend more time with my next-door neighbor who has MS.

by Anonymousreply 42August 14, 2024 6:32 AM

Yes, of course it was lip synced. No way the IOC was going to risk live vocals atop the Eiffel Tower and somehow make that work both for the live and broadcast audience. Gaga was lip syncing earlier in the opening ceremony, too.

That said, unless I'm mistaken, this is a newly recorded vocal that Celine laid down for this performance. And that alone, after everything she's been through, is hugely impressive. I'm not an easy crier and I'll admit it -- cliches and all (Piaf! Atop the Eiffel Tower!) -- brought me to tears.

This moment was a triumph for Celine. Full stop.

by Anonymousreply 43August 14, 2024 6:38 AM

She sang it as Piaf sang it, which reined in some of the vocal acrobatics Celine would have normally done.

The restrained style (for her) let the lyrics and music shine and it wasn’t all about her powerhouse voice.

It was perfect for the time and place.

by Anonymousreply 44August 14, 2024 6:55 AM

you can clearly hear her breath hitting the mic naturally, it isn't lip synced. you wouldn't hear the breath so prominent in a studio recording.

by Anonymousreply 45August 14, 2024 9:02 AM

R45 i mean the breath on words, not in between

by Anonymousreply 46August 14, 2024 9:03 AM

r45 - if you want to believe that, go ahead. I'm not gonna spoil your fun except to say that...

... you're wrong. She was lip syncing.

(I still think it was a glorious performance and the absolute highlight of the opening ceremonies.)

by Anonymousreply 47August 14, 2024 4:31 PM

Two things can be true at once:

It was lip synced

AND it was a glorious performance.

by Anonymousreply 48August 14, 2024 4:35 PM

Mission accomplished!
