This ought to be good.
Welp, them's the breaks, man.

Thread from 2021 regarding the exposure of the priest including Burrill.

For a brief second, I actually felt sorry for him. Until I came across this article.

Maybe I am crazy, but I find Father Burrill to be rather hot and I'm sure that he was very popular among the daddy chasers on Grindr. I regret the fact that none of the priests at my school were sexy, beefy daddies like him. Instead, I got desiccated old vultures and sweaty obese trolls.
Moving on, the fact that Grindr sells personal information on users is rather execrable, but his employers were clearly engaging in a witch hunt and he was one of the high profile casualties, so they bear a significant part of the responsibility in this situation.
In my opinion, unless he was breaking the law by abusing minors or doing any other evil things, his personal life is his own. Furthermore, the articles posted don't say that he was promoting homophobia in any way, so I would wait before we gleefully laugh at his public humiliation.
Finally, I doubt that his reputation was that damaged, since he returned to active ministry in 2022. It's not like he was expelled form the priesthood and sent to prison.

Below is a link to the article without the WaPo paywall.
I notice the subtitle reads:
[quote] Monsignor Jeffrey Burrill said in a lawsuit that Grindr released his data, leading him to lose his job and suffer “significant damage” to his reputation.
But within the article it states he resigned his position. I'm pretty sure if he'd wanted to keep his job, he could have simply gone to confession, promised to sin mo more, and said a rosary or two. .. And as for "suffering significant damage," is he talking about the condition of his hole from all his hookups?

[quote] Furthermore, the articles posted don't say that he was promoting homophobia in any way,
Did you see this?
[quote] Burrill, a priest from Wisconsin, worked for the USCCB since 2016 and was elected general secretary last year. USCCB is a Catholic organization made up of members of the Church’s hierarchy and opposes LGBTQ equality. It has worked against the development of an LGBTQ suicide hotline, tried to stop same-sex couples from adopting children, repeatedly criticized President Joe Biden for supporting LGBTQ rights, and supported anti-trans legislation this year.
I hope I don't ever run into people you consider homophobic, R6. I fear that they may quarter me or publicly burn me at the stake.
But, on one shallow thing I agree with you: he is an attractive middle aged daddy.

Sorry, R10 - I must admit that I haven't read most of the article and just searched for the term homophobia. This embarrassing mix up wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been lazy, so I apologize.

No offence taken, R11.

What the hell is a Catholic priest doing looking for gay sex on a hook-up site? Vows of chastity and all?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 28, 2024 1:44 AM |
There are no gods left in this world except money, R13.

I clutched my pearl rosary beads as soon as I was outed.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 28, 2024 1:56 AM |
Where *were* those rosary beads at the time, Monsignor?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 28, 2024 1:58 AM |
there should be more pictures

I was shocked to learn that a priest I grew up with in my parish was murdered a few years ago by a gay trick gone wrong. This shit is so rampant and twisted.

The Lord won't mind.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 29, 2024 1:58 PM |
He'll probably be at Southern Decadence in August.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 29, 2024 7:36 PM |
As aCatholic priest who worked for the USCCB, he supported an anti-LGBT agenda. He was outed by an extremist Catholic group.
I do not feel sorry for him. He remains a priest and in doing so continues to support this anti-LGBT agenda.
I am a practicing Catholic, who's just about had enough. I'm very close to turning my back on the Church.
Pope Francis, Cardinal Tobin, priests like James Martin, SJ, other priests I know, and much of the laity...their hearts are in the right place. But it may not be enough for me anymore.
And I'm very sad about it.

The Pope was banned after he continued to call posters here "frociaggine." He'd been warned.

"I am a practicing Catholic, who's just about had enough. I'm very close to turning my back on the Church."
So 40+ years of revelations about Catholic priest sexual abuse of children and the Church's arrogant attempts cover up the abuse weren't enough for you. What exactly is your cutoff point?
I left the Church in the early 1970s, when I came out. And I'm someone who went to Catholic school from kindergarten through 4 years of college. It certainly WASN'T an agonizing or painful decision.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | July 29, 2024 9:21 PM |
They don’t call it “seminary” for nothing. Frociaggines!
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 29, 2024 9:22 PM |
I'd like to see his now deleted Grindr profile.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 29, 2024 9:23 PM |
I'm glad it wasn't for you, R29. But in the wisdom you've undoubtedly attained over the years, you must know people's experiences and relationships of and with religion vary.
Thank you for your thoughtful response.
