Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

Eyes Wide Shut turns 25 this July. Since it's 1999 release, the film has evolved from lukewarm reviews to receiving international acclaim. Based on the novella by Traumnovelle by Arthur Schnitzler

Music by Chris Isaak, Wolfgang Mozart, György Ligeti, and Dmitri Shostakovich

Starring Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Todd Fields, Sky du Mont, Marie Richardson, Vinessa Shaw, Fay Masterson, Rade Šerbedžija, Thomas Gibson, Leelee Sobieski, Alan Cumming, Julienne Davis, Leon Vitali, and Sydney Pollack

This film has so many questions:

Was this Kubrick's final cut?

Who is in the Red Cloak?

How is Zeigler (Pollack) involved?

Did she really have an affair?

How did the mask get on his bed?

This is a fun trailer, too

I'll never understand all the hate this movie got.

What is great? No.

What it terrible or even bad? No it wasn't.

Cruise was fine. Kidman was fine. Any problems this movie had was in the script.

R3 I know, I think this film is a masterpiece.

I can't stand Cruise but I adore Schnitzler and Kubrick.

I listen to a few movies podcasts and most agree it is a classic. I really like it but cinephiles LOVE it.

Barry Lyndon was panned when it came out and is now considered an absolut masterpiece, probably his best.

by Anonymousreply 7July 22, 2024 2:08 AM

Kubrick was The Best.

by Anonymousreply 8July 22, 2024 2:11 AM

Kidman was barely in the movie, wasn’t she?

by Anonymousreply 9July 22, 2024 2:26 AM

I disliked it when it first came out; now I'm obsessed with it.

The most sexually provocative film of 1953.

My favorite Christmas movie. 🎄

It's no Barry Lyndon, nor even as good as many other of the director's films, but my affection for it has grown over time (I didn't dislike on first viewing, but didn't especially like it either, but it's more interesting on later viewings but still wanting.)

It’s similar to Vertigo because it works better if you interpret the whole thing as a dream.

by Anonymousreply 14July 22, 2024 7:26 AM

Isn't that what David Lynch said about "Mulholland Drive" as well?

[quote] Who is in the Red Cloak?

I don't think Red Cloak is any character we've seen earlier in the film, just the host of the orgy. But the actor was Leon Vitali, probably best remembered for playing Marisa Berenson's bratty, hateful older son who gets the shit beaten out of him by Ryan O'Neal in "Barry Lyndon"

Such a dumb ending.

by Anonymousreply 17July 22, 2024 8:12 AM

I loved it. A lot more than his "better" movies.

I was in a theater watching Eyes Wide Shut at the exact moment JFK Jr flew his plane into the sea and drowned. He got the better part of the deal.

by Anonymousreply 19July 22, 2024 9:31 AM

I saw it in DC and the audience laughed all the way through it.

I enjoyed the voyeuristic aspect of it. Supposedly the set of Nicole and Tom’s apartment was dressed with real items from their lives to create an intimate and personal environment for them to act in. So I’m like is that Nicole’s actual toothbrush, face cream.

And to the is day, when I’m feeling fancy (like on vacation), I slip off my undies like Nicole slips off her panties in the opening scene -allowing them to slink down to your ankles, stepping out of them one leg at a time, oh so gingerly - like a real, rich white lady.

I love it. It's my favorite Kubrick movie. Everything about it is perfect to me.

The woman tells Tom Cruise she is obsessed with him then ends up marrying Thomas Gibson, who looks a little like Cruise.

by Anonymousreply 23July 22, 2024 2:37 PM

It's an excellent movie with a lot of nuance. The visual style is beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 24July 22, 2024 3:35 PM

Illuminati blueprint

by Anonymousreply 25July 22, 2024 3:42 PM

It's elegant and beautiful

by Anonymousreply 26July 23, 2024 12:59 AM

Meh.

I remember on the way to the theater to see it, we listened to the news coverage of the search and recovery effort.

The role was originally supposed to be played by Jennifer Jason Leigh, but she had to drop out due to scheduling.

I really love this movie; it's one of my favorite films of the 90s, and the only Kubrick film I've seen in the theater during its original run.
