Authors, Celebrities, Politicians, Public Figures that love Classical Music?

I love classical music. It is the majority of what I listen to. It is a true passion of mine.

Today it seems as "classy and sophisticated," so public figures always say they like classical music (or showtunes or jazz) to appear more intelligent and upscale. For instance, Melania Trump's RNC was to third movement from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. It is all a little silly really.

So I thought I would start a thread about public figures who genuinely like classical music. I automatically elevate someone who shares a love of music.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an avid opera fan. Her best friend and ideological rival, Antonin Scalia, also loved opera. There is even an opera about their friendship.

She was a classical pianist, r13. She would perform with orchestras in different cities. When I was in high school, my best friend (who took piano lessons) went to see her and went backstage afterwards to get his program signed. She was very friendly and spent time with him asking about his favorite composers, etc.

It was always seen that way. The poor had folk music, they weren't listening to Beethoven when he was around. Not that they were ever even wanted at his performances.

by Anonymousreply 27July 27, 2024 1:33 PM

I don;t entirely agree, r27.

Mozart's "The Magic Flute" was popular with (and premiered for) the non-wealthy, and of course almost everyone in Italy in the nineteenth century, rich and poor, knew and liked Verdi's most famous arias. The opera used to be a more democratic venue.

It’s interesting how often in movies a love of classical music is seen as a symptom of villainy. Hannibal Lecter is seen listening to Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Hume Cronyn in Brute Force plays Wagner to muffle the sounds of beatings.
