FX’s ‘Alien’ series gets official title ‘Alien: Earth’
[quote]“We just wrapped production, so now I’m into the long post that gets into visual effects,” Hawley told Variety while discussing the Emmy nominations earned by “Fargo”.
[quote]“We’re pretty bullish on ‘Alien: Earth’ and we’ve told him that assuming, as we hope, it is a returning television series, we want him to focus on on at least writing two seasons of it before returning to a possible sixth season of ‘Fargo,'” Landgraf said.

Hawley is disregarding both Prometheus and Covenant lore for this show. I don't know how to feel about that just yet.
[quote]“I’ve talked to Ridley Scott at length about it. For me and for many people, xenomorphs are the perfect life form. The creation of the creature is due to millions of years of evolution and comes from having existed for a million years in space. The idea expressed in those films, which is a biological weapon created half an hour ago, has no value for me.”

R1 Prometheus was great but Covenant should be ignored.

A) Quantum Mechanics tells us time is not linear. It's at least fixed, and if anything, it probably isn't real, so he can fuck right off with that comment.
B) If they weren't designed for killing, they haven't really *done* anything else that would point to a higher purpose. Unless this show is meant to address that, the original canon of P & C should stand and this entire show can fuck right off.

Noah Hawley is a creative genius, and he's made two of my favorite TV series, Legion and Fargo. I'm excited for this.

Christ on a cracker — way to completely miss Hawley’s point.

What higher purpose do parasitic wasps express? Or filarial nematodes, or any other parasitic organism that exhibits diverse and complex life cycles?
Fuck off with that Aristotleon teleological bullshit.

It looked to me like maybe bracelets or other jewelry glinting as it moved in the light. But this is Noah Hawley—could be it's something that will never be explained but will be captivating to watch nevertheless.

They're making a sequel to Romulus?!
I was NOT a fan of the first one. I'm surprised they're making another but probably shouldn't be

Romulus was a very good movie. The fans and the critics loved it. Why wouldn’t they make a sequel?

R15 it shouldn’t get a sequel because YOU didn’t like it?
Of course it’s getting a sequel, it is the highest grossing Alien movie to date. It did better than expected.

They wouldn’t make a sequel unless it made money. Presumably it did.

Somewhat exotically, the whole thing was shot in Thailand. Not as a cost-saving measure, Hawley chose it because most of it takes place on a research island, plus the climate was just right. I assume the city shots are Bangkok, where this long interview with him took place.
I'm getting more and more excited about this, please don't let it suck!

Social media is ripping nepo baby Sydney Chandler apart over this behaviour. Not the best way to launch your show and career.
[quote]It’s the day of the photo shoot, and the star of FX’s would-be summer smash is missing. Sydney Chandler, who plays Wendy on “Alien: Earth,” is supposed to appear on Variety’s cover with her co-star Timothy Olyphant and the show’s creator, Noah Hawley. One day before the shoot, though she had agreed to be photographed, Chandler made it known (through reps) that she wasn’t willing to participate in the kind of video interview that is the standard ask at Variety — as at other publications. Prolonged negotiations continued until the morning of the shoot.
[quote]At first, one of Chandler’s reps voiced the actor’s concern about playing a game with “two older men” (in other words, her co-star and showrunner, who are, respectively, 57 and 58). The game, the comic test “How Well Do They Know Each Other?,” seemed innocuous to us — everyone from Ariana Grande to Ryan Reynolds to Daniel Craig has done it in the past. But to demonstrate good faith, we offered to show Chandler sample questions. Then, she sent a list of ones we’d never ask. (We don’t ever offer question approval, and there’s good reason why: “How many ‘Alien’ films are there?” was high on Chandler’s list.) After that, she changed her mind and decided a game on video wasn’t something she felt comfortable doing at all. Now, on the morning of the shoot, after some convincing from her agent, we hear she will come. Then Chandler decides, after all that — never mind, she can’t make it.

Sydney Chandler, Star of FX’s “Alien: Earth,” Misses Cover Shoot Amid Publicity Tensions
Sydney Chandler, star of FX’s highly anticipated Alien: Earth, pulled out of a scheduled Variety cover shoot at the last minute, citing illness and discomfort with participating in a standard promotional video segment. Her absence left co-star Timothy Olyphant and showrunner Noah Hawley appearing without her, despite the show being centered on her character, Wendy.
Chandler, daughter of actor Kyle Chandler, is relatively new to the spotlight and described her decision as setting a boundary, not a protest. Hawley expressed disappointment, noting the show’s female lead was missing from a female-driven franchise launch. The tension underscores the challenges of managing publicity for major productions, especially with emerging stars.
Alien: Earth, set in 2120, reimagines the Alien franchise for television, focusing on themes of corporate power, AI, and transhumanism. Chandler’s character is a childlike consciousness in an adult’s body, caught between alien threats and a collapsing human order. The show blends social commentary with sci-fi horror and was conceived by Hawley over eight years, finally greenlit post-Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.
Filmed in Thailand, the massive production was interrupted by the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes but is now on track for an August 12 premiere. FX hopes the series will match the success of Shōgun and The Bear, with potential for multiple seasons. Despite the rocky press rollout, Chandler’s performance is being praised, and both she and Hawley are open to continuing the story if the series succeeds.

“The show is built around Sydney’s character, and the work she did as a professional was tremendous,” he says afterward. “I’m disappointed that my female-centric show, based on a female-facing franchise, does not have my lead actress on the cover. It felt awkward to be there with Tim without her.”
