As someone who has opiate addicted family members and grew up in the hillbilly north the book resonated for me, regardless of its artistic failings. It wasn’t meant to be Finnegan’s Wake. But that background doesn’t lend itself to “oh I can own the Presidency with this college boy with a junkie mom.” Apparently Thiel has been his benefactor since Vance was at Yale going to law school.
