STI rates are going up in the U.S.

It’s been reported many times by the CDC and other agencies that STI (sexually transmitted infection) rates have been increasing in recent years. New data highlights that the biggest increase in the US is in older people. Specifically, those aged over 65.

Compiled by Fairhealth, which tracks billions of health insurance claims across the US, and covering the period between 2020-2023, it found the STI rates jumped by 24 percent in those aged over 65 in this period. The data specifically covers commercially insured patients only.

There was also a 16 percent increase in STI rates for those aged 55-64. The only decrease was seen in those aged under 24.

The data did not look at sexuality. However, it’s known that gay and bisexual men are disproportionately likely to report having an STI.

According to the Fairhealth data, the infections showing the greatest increase were syphilis (29.4 percent), gonorrhea (16.8 percent) and HIV (14.1 percent).

Shut your sex down!!

Boredom

by Anonymousreply 2July 11, 2024 12:43 AM

We are mostly Americans here why worry? Stay home be safe. ( lesbians can safely ignore the following it does not apply to you this is a mans issue)

I just got a epi update today that shows that over a 9 year period in Europe ending in 2023 Gonorrhea had gone up by 321% and syphilis was up 100%.

As one euro expert doctor said it’s a shame because syphilis and GC were almost nonexistent in late1990s and early 2000s

Stay safe avoid Europe support American business :-)

by Anonymousreply 3May 12, 2025 10:03 AM

This thread will turn into how it's best to never have sex ever.

by Anonymousreply 4May 12, 2025 10:08 AM

There was a lot of sex going on in late 1990s and early 2000s. A lot. And this I know from first hand experience. I even had sex in Europe.

And yet gonorrhea and syphilis according to one euro STD expert was virtually nonexistent then.

Can anyone explain how this could happen ? A lot of sex, yet GC and syphilis were almost made nonexistent? A mystery that just makes no sense?

by Anonymousreply 5May 12, 2025 10:18 AM

"The only decrease was seen in those aged under 24"

Because they're having sex with other young people who haven't been exposed to STIs yet.

by Anonymousreply 6May 12, 2025 2:01 PM

[quote]It’s been reported many times by the CDC and other agencies that STI (sexually transmitted infection)

Next time, say STD and you won't have to specify what it stands for.

Most Americans know it as STD, not STI.

by Anonymousreply 7May 12, 2025 2:09 PM

Most Americans only go to a doctor when it's an emergency.

by Anonymousreply 10May 12, 2025 6:20 PM

Doxypep is and will be a fantastic tool in combatting rises in bacterial STIs.

[quote] In October 2022, San Francisco was the first city to recommend doxyPEP for gay and bisexual men and gender-diverse people. Researchers with the San Francisco Department of Public Health compared monthly STI cases before and after the guidance. Overall, STIs declined significantly citywide after doxyPEP implementation. Chlamydia cases fell by 50%, and early syphilis decreased by 51% relative to predicted levels, though there was a small increase in gonorrhea.

The overall drop citywide is huge here, because it takes into account all people incl those not using Doxypep. Great news don’t you agree OP?

R11 the stated cdc position on is doxyprep safe as far as making the already bad antibiotic resistance problem becoming worse and the cdc position was —— we are studying and following that.

Then the cdc lab that was critical to this following was shut down. I’d not be surprised to see this program shut down by Kennedy. Because of the risk it might pose to the general larger society with antibiotic resistance.

It would take years of study to know the actual. risk to society. The conservatives will approve of this by saying let them eat cake or let them wear condoms. One of the two,

Cakes I realize are was a hot button issue on DL not that long ago.

by Anonymousreply 12May 13, 2025 11:30 AM

Watch those rates drop like a rock since Diddy's been locked up for the past eight months, and hasn't had any freak-offs. Just watch...

by Anonymousreply 13May 13, 2025 11:34 AM

And if this admin does do away with doxyprep because they see it as a larger potential problem for the country as a whole and they find that gay men by and large refuse to wear condoms as has been recommended for decades and infections soar what do you think this admin s response will be?

If things turn uniquely bad for gay men in the next few years this is the issue that will do it. Not cakes.

by Anonymousreply 14May 13, 2025 11:42 AM

R7 a disease sounds very bad an infection sounds a lot less bad. STI is in now STD is not.

by Anonymousreply 15May 13, 2025 1:42 PM

[quote] the stated cdc position on is doxyprep (sic) safe as far as making the already bad antibiotic resistance problem becoming worse and the cdc position was —— we are studying and following that.

Fascinating, yet meaningless R12 / ocular syphilis troll. Of course by lowering the prevalence of untreated bacterial infections in society, doxypep (not doxyprep) will reduce the likelihood of antibiotic resistance developing in other ways, which is great news too ;)

Care to cite any of these studies or CDC recommendations you’ve mentioned by any chance? Bc what I found is the below:

[quote] No vaccines and few chemoprophylaxis options exist for the prevention of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (specifically syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea). These infections have increased in the United States and disproportionately affect gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW). In three large randomized controlled trials, 200 mg of doxycycline taken within 72 hours after sex has been shown to reduce syphilis and chlamydia infections by >70% and gonococcal infections by approximately 50%.

[quote] This report outlines CDC’s recommendation for the use of doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxy PEP), a novel, ongoing, patient-managed biomedical STI prevention strategy for a selected population. CDC recommends that MSM and TGW who have had a bacterial STI (specifically syphilis, chlamydia, or gonorrhea) diagnosed in the past 12 months should receive counseling that doxy PEP can be used as postexposure prophylaxis to prevent these infections. Following shared decision-making with their provider, CDC recommends that providers offer persons in this group a prescription for doxy PEP to be self-administered within 72 hours after having oral, vaginal, or anal sex. The recommended dose of doxy PEP is 200 mg and should not exceed a maximum dose of 200 mg every 24 hours.

[quote] Doxy PEP, when offered, should be implemented in the context of a comprehensive sexual health approach, including risk reduction counseling, STI screening and treatment, recommended vaccination and linkage to HIV PrEP, HIV care, or other services as appropriate. Persons who are prescribed doxy PEP should undergo bacterial STI testing at anatomic sites of exposure at baseline and every 3–6 months thereafter. Ongoing need for doxy PEP should be assessed every 3–6 months as well. HIV screening should be performed for HIV-negative MSM and TGW according to current recommendations.

R15 no they changed it because it’s more accurate. If you have asymptomatic gonorrhea, which clears up in around 5 days, you don’t have a disease, you have an infection. The same way you wouldn’t describe yourself as having a disease when you have a short common cold. Unless that’s woke scolding too? lol

by Anonymousreply 17May 13, 2025 2:55 PM

R17 have you called CDC and NIH and told them that your research shows that gonorrhea that has no noticeable symptoms , as often happens with women and many men , will just clear up in 5 days on its own , so gonorrhea is not really a disease .

Call them asap I bet they would love to know this :-)

by Anonymousreply 18May 13, 2025 5:03 PM

R18 I didn’t say all gonorrhea has no symptoms, however some cases don’t, and that’s when it’s referred to as being asymptomatic. I also never said it cleared up on its own, but it does clear up in less than a week with antibiotics. I think you need to slow down when reading.

by Anonymousreply 19May 13, 2025 5:35 PM

Abstinence is a notoriously ineffective strategy for preventing sexual ills, so naturally that's the go-to method for Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 20May 13, 2025 5:48 PM

R19 thank you for explaining what asymptomatic means

Unless it’s resistant and much of the GC we are seeing now does show resistance , all non resistant GC usually clears up in 5-7 days. Asymptomatic or not.

It’s still a fucking disease.

And resistance is a fucking issue. And getting worse. And you know what will happen if GC ever becomes non treatable? Non safe sex risky sex how ever the law defines it will become a law enforcement issue because you cannot have individuals spreading serious diseases that cannot be cured but can be easily prevented

Although maybe this admin will go out of its way to protect the community and be gentle in its response.

.

by Anonymousreply 21May 13, 2025 6:08 PM

[quote] thank you for explaining what asymptomatic means

I was clarifying what I had said because you didn’t read my comment properly R21, that's not my fault that you misunderstood me. Idk why you’re getting sassy about it lol.

[quote] It’s still a fucking disease.

Not necessarily sorry, explainer example below. Also again, you need to chill out.

[quote] An infection that persists may be considered a disease depending on what the infectious agent is and its pathophysiology. A small cut on the finger that becomes infected and heals in a week is an infection but not a disease. A small cut on the finger that becomes infected, spreads into the bloodstream, and causes sepsis becomes a disease.

[quote] And resistance is a fucking issue.

Who said it wasn’t? Are you ok lol?

[quote] Non safe sex risky sex how ever the law defines it will become a law enforcement issue

This is so speculative it’s not worth responding to sorry.

by Anonymousreply 22May 13, 2025 6:49 PM

R22 we can talk about camps and round ups for being gay non stop at DL but what happens if any STD turns untreatable is far to speculative to discuss ?

What will this particular admins response be in the face of a gay related STD outbreak or serious sexual related health issue is a fuck more important than talking about gay camps for all homosexuals.

We have seen more than a few outbreaks or epidemics, and when there was there was always a friendly supportive CDC that tried its best not to make the gay male community a target . That CDC no longer exists, .

by Anonymousreply 23May 13, 2025 7:02 PM

R23 I don’t talk about “camps or round ups” at all. That’s more your bag. I’m saying you’re being completely unscientific and hysterical. Every few days you get on here and threaten some sort of future legislation against gay men for either some sort of new currently undiscovered disease, or a mutation of a disease that has no basis in current reality, and exists only in your mind.

There was also not always a “friendly supportive CDC” are you out of your mind? You never post supporting evidence for any of your claims and you constantly allude to “oh the CDC said this” and bad grammar your way around sounding (what you think is) convincing. And you sound like a lunatic. If you wanna talk about STIs, talk about what is happening now, in real life, not in your unscientific worst case possible wet dreams.

by Anonymousreply 24May 13, 2025 7:13 PM

So is the article implying the older age groups' increase in STIs are from gay men alone? It said the jump in England's STIs were from older gay men 2015-2019.

Why can't we have nice things?

You'd think us older gay men who lived through AIDS crisis would be a bit more careful.

by Anonymousreply 25May 13, 2025 7:32 PM

Great job whores of DL!

by Anonymousreply 28May 13, 2025 7:43 PM

Where’s the actual data specific to Eldergay men. Elderstraights are full of germs

by Anonymousreply 29May 13, 2025 7:50 PM

R29 I’d love to know the actual number of cases of infectious syphilis during a year from the Villages from elder straights, Actual dx data not headlines.

Straights in general middle class elder straight's in particular must be about as low a risk group for syphilis as any group this side of nuns in the US.

Gay men as you know have a truly significant problem with syphilis not that all on DL have anything against syphilis,,

by Anonymousreply 30May 13, 2025 8:07 PM

You’re not the eye syphilis troll are you? I bet he’s here somewhere 😵‍💫

by Anonymousreply 31May 13, 2025 8:09 PM

“Don’t be a bitch, prevent the itch!” 😷

by Anonymousreply 33May 13, 2025 8:12 PM

I just saw an interview with a doctor about the rise of antibiotic resistance, and he said that it had almost (note: almost) nothing to do with people over-using antibiotics on themselves, but rather the meat industry massively injecting antibiotics into every animal -and raising those animals in filthy conditions where diseases are ever-present.

I know the FDA requires that meat sold for human consumption be free of antibiotic traces -but given how they fail to inspect or penalize violators I imagine the problem will only get worse under the new Reich.

by Anonymousreply 34May 13, 2025 8:20 PM

R34 The over use of antibiotics taken by people as treatment is a major problem in the US. And has been for years. And medical experts do think that this over use has an adverse effect on resistance , People are actually doubting this?

That does not mean that it’s the only problem

It would take years and a knowledge of how many men are taking how much self administered rx antibiotics , follow them and look at the data over years. No one has done that, CDC made it clear in writing we hope it does not increase resistance but we are following to see.

If things go south with STDs over the next few years things are going to turn real ugly . .These folks who are now totally in charge and backed by the Christian right are just waiting for an excuse.

Maybe we will all stay lucky.

by Anonymousreply 35May 13, 2025 8:46 PM

R31 of course it is - another tell is his “Dx and Rx” bullshit he does that he thinks makes himself sound smart.
