R5 When Hillbilly Elegy first was published I had friends that told me I had to read it, to understand the MAGA crowd with some empathy, and how smart he was. So I read it. It's so pitiful that he and I grew up at almost exactly the same time in almost exactly the same circumstances, yet turned out so different as adults.
