R3, every media organization said that Le Pen’s party was going to have a blow-out win. Instead, there was an unusually high voter turnout and the far-right failed to secure enough seats to form a government. Macron still has to put together a coalition, of course, but this was quite a waste of money by Russia, which was counting on a Le Pen win.

I think it's actually illegal in France to investigate such a question but I wonder how much of this vote margin came from third worlders (now over 7% of the population) voting against Le Pen.

If I read the results right, it looks like Le Pen’s party got the most seats for a single party, but the coalitions of parties on the left and in the center got more.

R23, you are probably right. Still. This was a completely unexpected outcome to the almost assured win of the extreme right in France. It makes one hope. People are not, after all, that stupid.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 8, 2024 12:49 AM |
French people might not be that stupid, R24. The jury is still out on Americans.

Agrreed, r24. I dont think American people are stupid but now they do have a more challenging option. I am particularly happy for this result because there has been a trend where nothing appears to stop the extreme right, in many countries. The , almost expected, fall of France would be another one. Surprisingly it, didn’t.

I just returned home from a couple weeks in France. I had a feeling this would happen. Before the first round of balloting, not one person tried to shove a political flyer at me.
But after the hard right dominated the first ballot, every other person no matter where I was handed me a Populist flyer.
I’m a moderate but feeling pretty lefty today. The Populists saved their country! Time for us to stop whining and wringing our hands and bury this motherfucker once and for all in November.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 8, 2024 1:56 AM |
Same old story. The right surges in the first round and then the left wing parties come together and back a centrist candidate in the second round in order to block a right-wing majority. Sarkozy owes his presidency to this phenomenon.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 8, 2024 2:17 AM |
They just elected a crackpot FAR LEFT government. The country is going to go down in flames. These aren’t Macron types. These are batshit crazy ones. It seems France wants to go extreme whether it’s right or left.

It's important to remember that the far-left in France is arguably as Eurosceptic and anti-globalism at the far-right. This surprise result is not necessarily an endorsement of the pro-EU/NATO ideology.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 8, 2024 2:37 AM |
The right wing trolls are really out today... you guys aren't even trying.
Macron remains President, Le Pen's party finishes a surprising third, completely in contradiction to the polls. I haven't seen the fascist kid who was going to be the new leader say anything about "a rigged election"... ah democracy.
Given that no party will have a majority, it'll be a "stay the course" government. Not getting much done, but not breaking things either.
My conclusion on worldwide politics - mostly get rid of incumbents... not necessarily good news for either Biden or Trump (who is running like a sitting President).

French Jews wouldn't fare any better under Le Pen's Front.

R48 Yep, the more significant, though underreported, fact about recent elections: will Putin's influence be allowed to win elections and change policies. He really wanted Macron gone, and this loss is a firm rebuke to him and his attempts. Obviously the Trump v Democrats election has Putin v western democracy as an important factor.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 8, 2024 3:05 PM |
UK here.
I was talking to a French friend (who lives here) today. He had a postal vote for the first round of voting, but flew to Marseille to vote yesterday. He utterly despairs of Macron gambling like this, and is disappointed that the three blocs will be fighting too much to actually get any work done in Parliament. He says he would not be surprised if Marine Le Pen makes another run for the Presidency, despite her saying last time that she would not stand again.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 8, 2024 3:26 PM |
Of course Le Pen will run again... and the election is in 2027. Given the way the world is, 2027 is an eternity away.

[quote] National Front is neo-Nazi like Patriot Front is in the US. They are very different from traditional right leaning political parties in Europe.
The party name is National Rally now. Looking at the Wikipedia article, and just the intro without diving further inthe details, it states:
[quote]It opposes immigration, advocating significant cuts to legal immigration, protection of French identity, and stricter control of illegal immigration. The party advocates a "more balanced" and "independent" French foreign policy, opposing French military intervention in Africa while supporting France leaving NATO's integrated command. It also supports reform of the European Union (EU) and its related organisations as well as economic interventionism, protectionism, and zero tolerance for breaches of law and order.
For whatever reason, the into doesn’t include any neo-Nazi beliefs. Can someone familiar with French politics explain the new-Nazi part? I know there was stuff going on in the past, but talking about the current iteration of the party.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | July 8, 2024 5:10 PM |

Media and polling got it right and it is based on this polling that
1) political leaders from the left spent most of last week trying to find who should be the next prime minister and that
2) I posted what would happen after Sunday in the thread below at R20. My post is timestamped 7/1/2024, so we knew here how this would eventually turn out: The National Rally never ever had a chance. The only surprise is that Emmanuel Macron's party came in second instead of third. But the National Rally never had a chance to win a majority of the seats.
Sorry R68, France is very much alive. And I would hope that the United States would be inspired by what just happened in Poland, in the UK and in France and follow in our footsteps. As a Frenchman I can tell you that if Trump wins come November it would affect me more than if the RN had won a majority of the seats yesterday, because I see it as the end of the NATO and 80 years of relative peace across Europe. I would like to add that Jean-Luc Mélenchon doesn't have a chance either to be our next prime minister. It will either be a moderate from the so-called socialist party (which is actually social-democrat) or someone from the left of Emmanuel Macron's own party.
Bur for some reason, most media out of the country made it sound like the Rassemblement National had it in the pocket. Now that I've said that, I still feel dirty and need a shower.

They call this left islamo left, because it is close to Muslim brotherhood and radical islam. Muslim immigrants ard their most devoted voters along with bobos, upper middle class hipsters.
They are rabidly anti semitic (silly how Le Pen is called out for not being very Arab friendly, but left is much worse when it comes to Jews).
Last week a Jewish girl have been raped by few young Muslims, who also screamed anti semitic slurs at her. The left tried to relativize this, one of many attacks, by saying: what do they do to kids in Gaza.

I lived in Paris for five years and loved it. I taught in the public school system. I hate to agree, but the conservatives are unfortunately right in regard to the Muslims there. The current generations refuse to assimilate and the incoming immigrants are even worse. It wouldn’t be bad if they didn’t want to impose their beliefs on everyone else. I don’t pretend to know the solution but turning a blind eye or even encouraging this behavior will be France’s demise,
