Possible Biden replacement?
People seem to like him -- and if he got elected governor of Kentucky as a Democrat, he must be doing something right.

Four months is not enough to establish national appeal, especially when an incumbent once removed is running on the other side.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 3, 2024 1:54 PM |
Nobody outside if Kentucky knows who he is, and I seriously doubt if most citizens in Kentucky know who he is.
OP, how many rocks did you have to look under to find this guy, just anothet sacrificial lamb to be offered at Donald Trump's reelection altar.

that's okay, unknowns are fine

I think it should be Warren. She’s the perfect candidate for neoliberal capitulation to actual leftism without scaring the elites into immediate treason
by Anonymous | reply 5 | July 3, 2024 2:29 PM |
The problem with Warren is that the right's attacks on her have left her reputation in tatters.
They knew what a threat she'd be and they effectively neutralized her.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 3, 2024 3:18 PM |
He's the only one who can beat Trump, IMO.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | July 3, 2024 3:29 PM |
His day will come. I saw him a few years ago doing a news conference after some hideous flood in KY, and he had Great White Hope written all over him. Hopefully the Dems will take notice -
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 3, 2024 4:19 PM |
I would let him bschmear his ass all over my face.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 3, 2024 4:24 PM |
He seems too soft-spoken. The only way to beat Trump is to constantly reiterate his shitty record. People tend to forget things and move on. REMIND them: "Over a million Americans died under your watch because you said it would go away".
by Anonymous | reply 10 | July 3, 2024 4:34 PM |
Josh Shapiro and Andy Beshear for the ticket. I know it's the same old same old ticket with two cis-straight-white males but if it's reassuring for some Independents, then be that way. It's not like we can afford losing even the backwards thinking independents. Also, they have no baggage and would be perfect to close the exhausting old fossils era with refreshingly new blood.

He needs Invisalign first.

[quote]I think it should be Warren.
NO, NO, and NO. She couldn’t even win her own state in a primary. She comes across as a shrill harpy whose first act will be to raise your taxes.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 3, 2024 5:11 PM |
Everyone in Kentucky knows who Andy Beshear is. He built up a shitton of goodwill during the pandemic with his policies and daily briefings. He's managed to function while fending off a rabid Republican supermajority in our legislature. And in our deep red state, he managed to not only win his election but also win RE-election last year. Yes, he's a politician and a nepo baby (his father was a popular Democratic governor), but I think he's an actual good person and would make an excellent president, if not now then someday.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 3, 2024 5:58 PM |
R11? Josh Shapiro is an observant Jew, and those folks looking for a straight cis white-guy ticket may still have a problem with him.
I personally love him and I would vote for him in a NY minute.

Gretchen Whitmer.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 3, 2024 9:19 PM |
I like him, but I still think Newsome is waiting and well prepared - and word is- funded.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | July 3, 2024 9:28 PM |
The Democratic hierarchy isn't interested in any more white men for a few cycles yet.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | July 3, 2024 9:42 PM |
What is Whitmer known for besides almost getting kidnapped, raped and murdered by one of Trump's domestic terrorist sleeper cells?

She knows how to win in the Rust Belt. Which is something Hillary couldn't figure out. Which is why we have "President Trump".

If people feel like taking the risk, Harris. She resonates with black women who vote big for the Democrats
If they don't, Beshar, Brown, Casey... theres's tons of comforting white guys who won't frighten the horses.

R28, I just keep hearing talking heads on CNN contend that failing to choose her will result in mass fury among black women voters. And the way DL carries on you'd think she was Joan Crawford's latest berth in the reincarnation journey.
I've given up trying to make a call. It's fucking chaos. No one knows what will happen, with Biden, to a possible successor, come election day. We are living in madness and anybody who thinks they know who is the right choice or how it will end is crazy, stupid, dishonest or all three.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 4, 2024 12:15 AM |
True, losing Brown in the Senate isn't a great idea.
Whitmer and Beshear would still bring in the midwestern vote.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 4, 2024 12:18 AM |
I think blacks are sufficiently frightened of the Republican agenda that they don't need to see black candidates to vote in November. They just need to see non-bigots.

by Anonymous | reply 38 | July 20, 2024 2:20 PM |
I like Newsom. Biden should see his presidency out and then retire. Harris can't win. It has to be a straight white male against Dump - sad but true. The new candidate would spark intense national and international interest. It might invigorate the Democratic campaign and win enough swing voters. It's kind of like - change nothing and definitely lose or change something and try to win.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 20, 2024 3:45 PM |
The states that matter in this race are PA, MI, and WI. Whitmer or Shapiro have the best chance there. A Whitmer/Beshear is the best chance the Democrats have of beating Trump.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 20, 2024 3:47 PM |
I don't see the US electing a women against Trump R40. When it's not against Trump then yes.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 20, 2024 3:51 PM |
I think it will be 20 years before a woman is elected POTUS.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | July 20, 2024 4:06 PM |
Then run Shapiro if it “can’t” be a woman. This race is about those three states, and that’s it. Whoever can win those states is the winner.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 20, 2024 4:10 PM |
The way to avoid this in the future is to have PA, WI, and MI be the first primaries in January. Way too much time and money is spent in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina…and the end result is the worst candidates who can’t win a general election become the nominees.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 20, 2024 4:12 PM |
Shapiro would have to deal with anti-Semitism bullshit from Christian Nationalists.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 20, 2024 4:13 PM |
Most Americans support Israel. “Christian Nationalists” are never going to vote for any Democratic candidate.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 20, 2024 4:16 PM |
Republican Mitt Romney got elected governor of deep blue Massachusetts. But that didn’t mean he could get elected president. I’ve heard Beshear’s not much of a public speaker, so I don’t know how successful a national candidate he’d be.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | July 20, 2024 4:24 PM |
Beshear is a bit of a nepo baby when it comes to KY politics. And he doesn't have as much of a name recognition nationwide.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 20, 2024 4:40 PM |
Bashear is good VP material. Not ready for top-of-ticket yet.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | July 20, 2024 4:47 PM |
I'm not sure I buy he's not ready. I'm not sure how much ready matters. Was Obama ready? Was Bill Clinton? Was Bush2.0? Was Jimmy Carter? Ready counts less than star quality in American elections, sad to say.
My take is the Democrats need a convention vote if this is to happen. They need that excitement and they need the media coverage and, sadly in 2024, they need the fucking drama. If they put forward a strong, clear spoken, confident candidate away we go. The party platform for 2024 exists. The excitement should drive almost all hands on deck to support the new nominee. Biden, bless him, was up against concerns about his age and mental acuity for at least a year. The debate was fatal, if a slow bleed out. But I gotta believe at least a part of what is driving Trump's numbers is Biden. Enough to tip it. Elections want to be about the future, not the past. An open process with a fresh younger face emerging could wrench the momentum away from Trump, who is winning this by default. Then hammer on choice and the court and whatever the economic plan is in the platform and I think there's enough room to pull off a win.
I hate that this is happening, but it is, with no clear answer, except a commitment by all hands that when it's over it's unity hell or high water because like the old chestnut says: crisis = danger + opportunity.
