I Want to Run for Congress
I grew up in small town Texas, moved to Houston for college and law school. Growing up, I studied various Texas politicians and brokers- Lyndon Johnson, John Connally, Lloyd Bentsen, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, John Tower, Charlie Wilson, Ann Richards, Mark White, Rick Perry, James Baker, and George H.W. Bush as well as presidents, kings, and other monarchs.
Now, at 27, I have been thinking about running for Congress. I am tired of the amateur theatricals of our current politicians. I am not an extremist. I have stances that could be classified as both liberal and conservative. I believe in personal responsibility, a balanced budget, and being a steward of world shaped and guided by American power. I voted Kasich in 2016, wrote in Colin Powell in 2020, and none in 2024.
In my personal life, I love reading classics and history, running, collecting wine and out of print books, and listening to classical music. I think I would be the boring and bland candidate, but would work hard and honest for my constituents. Therefore, I doubt I would win.
Any advice? Am I crazy?

It's really just a thought. I love studying policy and history. I really want America to succeed.

Your idealism is admirable, OP, but America is done. Down the tubes.
It’s over.

R5 I disagree. I think it can be saved. It might not be until 2028 though.

If you really want to run, run in a district which is gerrymandered to be overwhelmingly R or D. The below strategy will very seldom work in a competitive district.
Those safe types of districts allow young, totally inexperienced people get elected who think that reading about world leaders or having strong opinions is a good as learning about governing by attending meetings, serving on the school board, and working as a district chairman for their party.
Find one of these districts, good news is you don’t have live in it just the state, which has a long-serving representative who is retiring which will result in a crowded primary. Since most of the other candidates will likely be local known names with municipal or state experience, to make yourself stand out you’ll need to be as bombastic and extreme as you can in whichever direction suits, and against what the former Rep and your primary opponents. In a crowded field, you have a chance to make the run-off. Double down on your extreme tactic and attack both the opposition party as well as the establishment wing of your own party if it’s an off-year election. If it’s a Presidential election year moderate your stance.
Recent examples of this tactic working include: Majorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Bobert, Madison Cunningham, AOC, and a few others.

R7 But I'm not an extremist. I don't want to be. I cannot support things I don't fully believe.

There were several Congressmen with the name of Porter. Of course actor Eric Porter is among the most famous Porters.

Male Tyler, Texas congressional candidate had a great date with a man of Indian descent! We’re not sure what’s worse - that he’s another man or a dot Indian!
