The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel
There were a few threads about the crash and burn of Disney’s Star Wars Galactic Star Cruiser, but imo this deserves its own thread because of the viral review video.
Thr vid is by fandom maven Jenny Nicholson. She’s arguably the queen of fandom YouTube. She talks for over four *hours* about her checkered experience at the GSC and it’s such an engaging experience. It took her two years to make the video, partly because, one year after she started, the hotel closed, so she had to rework the content and focus.
Nicholson, a tiny SoCal gal in her early 30s, is a fascinating blend of perceptive and engaging, and childlike innocence. She’s also very funny. A typical experience involved her spending way too much time snarkily evaluating every scene of the Spunky Little Toaster movie, only to stop and tear up because something sad happened to the toaster. Which you may hate, but I adore.
Part of the experience of the hotel was being carted off to “Star Wars galaxy’s edge,” and part of the experience there was an app-driven game. It’s so lame — if you successfully complete the game, a piece of machinery at the park *might* emit a beep — and she’s so droll about it.
And of course there’s the now-infamous pole.
I’m not a theme park person at ALL but love her work anyway.

Not into this YouTuber, but the Star Wars bar on one of the Disney Cruise lines looked similarly awful. You weren’t even served by a Wookie, or had C-3PO mixing the cocktails, it was just boring grey sci-fi stuff.

Give us money because IP! No service, just pay us!

Yeah, as the video indicates, Disney is no longer interested in providing a lavish experience. They feel satisfied just putting the IP in front of you along with a collection basket.

Nothing good has come out of the Disney/Star Wars collaboration, except for the first season of The Mandalorian.

I love Jenny Nicholson. She’s so talented. Glad to see her getting all this attention.
I watched the whole thing within 48 hours of release and I don’t even like Star Wars. Her Dear Evan Hanson video is hilarious too, highly recommend.

A 4-hour video?! Get back to me when the Cliff Notes version appears

I read some professional travel reviews of the Star Wars/Disney hotel when it opened and over all they loved it. The one I remember most was a family with a couple of kids who enjoyed every second of this lavish experience.

That’s why I love a deep dive like this one. You never know what the motives are of someone saying “oh it’s amazing, so great!!!” in a pro review. But Nicholson filmed her experience and walks you through it all—you’re basically right there seeing it. It wasn’t great. And it was $6,000.

There's a lot of creative writing going on here.
It's a very long video by an adult Disney freak about yet another failed overpriced Disney attraction.
The End.

A four hour video about the failure of the hotel?!?
Hard pass.
Get back to me when they whittle the video down to 15 minutes.

It's really well done. She changes costumes throughout and manages to stay very engaging while going through the minutia of her experience and the overall analysis. I watched it over several sittings. She divides the video into several chapters, making it easy to do that.

I’m forced to agree with R10. A rave about a 4 hour pan could be a form of false euforia.

Mini media theorists in academia say that society is degrading because we can't do exposition on social media and web video. Everything has to be amusing to have a perceived value by the general public. R12 proves their point.
