I fucking LOATHE Trump, but..
Biden made a grave miscalculation. He should've stuck to the original plan- 4 years and out. He would've been looked on as the man who saved us from Trump.
But, his goddamned EGO got in the fucking way. Now his poor son will likely have to face jail time, and SCUMFUCK Trump will be our first dictator.
This is very, very bad. Dire. When Biden won in 2020, in the electoral college is was shockingly close. Many people here ignored that and figured Trump was finished. I knew he wasn't.
Now it will take a fucking miracle.
God help us.

The response also shows how uncomfortable Americans are with aging, generally. They’re like, “Oooo, old age!”
Ronald Reagan wasn’t exactly compos mentis for his 2nd term, nobody seemed to mind then. I’ve always had a theory that Dick Cheney was President for the entire Bush presidency - which is pretty much backed up by George’s interest in water colours post-presidency with zero interest in politics or defending his own policies.
I wish Joe had pulled it out tonight, I really thought he would for the sake of avoiding this response. But I’m sure he’ll have plenty of good days ahead. It was a fucking debate, ffs. They all suck.

Biden used to be sharp and energetic all the time. Now, he has his good days (like the State of the Union address) and his bad days (like tonight's debate). We can't spend the next 4 months always holding our breath, unsure whether Biden will have a good day or a bad day. This may be the most important presidential election ever, and we need a fighter who can bring their A game every day, not just 50% of the time.

[quote] EVERYDAY with Trump is a bad day. What part of that don't you get dolt?
Of course every day with Trump is a bad day. (I never said otherwise.) Trump is pure evil. We all know that. But like it or not, Biden and Trump are tied, and all of the recent polls show Trump leading in most of the swing states. To win in November, we need someone who can fight like hell each and every day to beat Trump, not someone who is fine one day and off their game the next. I hope Biden still has it in him to be that fighter every day from now until November, but tonight's debate gave me serious reasons to doubt it.

If the Democratic Party allows Joe Biden a graceful, respectful exit, full of gratitude for what he has done, and if Biden makes a speech for the ages, full of humility, hope and love of his country, his fellow Americans and democracy, a contested convention could really generate huge national, electoral interest and provide a lot of undecided, uninterested and concerned voters with a third choice representative of the future of our country that they can get behind. It could really galvanise interest and then provide a new Democratic candidate who can campaign full-time while Biden maintains his caretaker role, etc.
The new candidate would have the right to select their own VP but keeping Kamala Harris - should she not win the nomination at the convention - does provide a sense of handover and continuity between the two administrations.
And the best part?
Everyone can then look at the GOP and say, “Now it’s your turn.”
Suddenly they’re the ones trapped with an aged nominee, etc. Suddenly the contrast with Trump gets turned up to HIGH because Trump and the GOP won’t have had 6 or 7 (or 24 years) to smear the new candidate with disinformation, fake hearings, etc. Suddenly they actually have to make a case.
But it has to come from Biden and if given a little time, I suspect it will. I think a lot of Democrats thought the changing of the guard would come in 2028 but it’s probably best to do it now. Joe Biden was not enough of an egotist to run for President in 2016. He ran in 2020 because Trump made him sick and he’s done great things for the country. I think he’ll do what’s best for him as an elder statesman, for his country, for democracy and for his family. And he should definitely pardon Hunter on his way out. (If only so whomever follows him doesn’t have to do it - though I suspect the minute Biden stepped aside, MAGA would suddenly lose all interest in Hunter Biden.)
But people should give it time, let him come to his own conclusion. He should not be ridiculed and abandoned. He deserves our support and gratitude.

I couldn't bring my self to watch the debate (and glad now that I didn't), however: I'm old enough to remember Joe's presidential debates in his younger years and he's never been verbally dexterous. Also, the bar is different for both men: Trump has to not shit himself and just bluster and yell constantly, which he does and Biden has power through that. Not making excuses - if was going to run again, he should at least have a successor that readily take the reigns, which isn't Kamala & his son's conviction was no doubt a blow.
If I try to see the glass half full, maybe it will wake people up to the idea that a Trump presidency is not unrealistic and you should put down the #Free Palestine sign and think about how your own freedom will be impacted if Shitler takes power again.

I love Biden and think he’ll be considered one of our best presidents. I’ve been deeply troubled by his approval ratings and concerns about his age. Last night I actually prayed to God he’d do well in the debate. I’m vacationing in France and didn’t watch debate live. But woke to the headlines shortly after the debate ended.
At first I was terribly depressed but then I got excited. This actually gives us a chance to pump some life into our side. Joe should pull an LBJ and say it’s best for the country to step aside for another candidate.
I’m sure the Dems have gamed out a plan to install a new candidate. Hope so anyway.
Biden is a good, decent man who saved democracy. It’s sad to see him in this position but stepping aside will secure his place as a great president.

I'm surprised to find myself in grieving mode. Not agitated, not panic. Grief.
The polling for this contest has been the most stable ever, compared to past cycles. And it appears neck and neck. And the past two elections featuring Trump showed us that the polls undercounted the Trump vote by around 3%. Fatal to Hillary in 2016, inconsequential in 2020 because Biden got the votes he needed. If you geek out on the data like I do, you know this.
Both men were in the fight of their political lives. One fighter showed up. The other came across elderly and weak. Transcripts mean nothing -- we have a freak political event where the 78 year old is the *younger* of the two candidates, and last night was 100% about optics.
We will need an unusual surprise event to change this, and we are not likely to receive one. There is an outside chance that Judge Merchan will actually sentence Trump to prison on July 11. There is a very slim chance that Trump himself could experience a major medical event between now and early voting in October.
But this is where we are.
If I could be granted omnipotence I'd pull Biden today and put Speaker of the House Hakeem Jeffries in his place. An absolutely superb, solid and persuasive political leader.

"An 81% majority of registered voters who watched the debate say it had no effect on their choice for president, with another 14% saying that it made them reconsider but didn’t change their mind. Just 5% say it changed their minds about whom to vote for."
That sounds about right. But the thing is, in a race this tight, losing just 2% or 3% of your support is lethal. In terms of competitiveness and simple electoral data, this is Bush vs Gore 2000 all over again.
Hopefully this debate will have no long lasting effect on voters' inclinations. But we don't just need to stay in place, we need Biden to pull ahead. It's nearly July. Early voting starts in just 15 weeks.

Yes, the increasingly worse, cognitive decline related gaffes by Biden from now until Election Day will hopefully each not have a long lasting impact.

I love Biden to pieces. But this is more than 1 bad night. He knew—and everyone else knew—how vital it was for him to be, well, vital. We put all of our chips on the table for this debate.
And we lost.
If Biden remains in the race, of course most of us will still vote for him. But he can’t afford to lose any votes. And he did last night.
As much as I love Joe, I’m much more terrified of a 2nd Trump reign. A new candidate—an exciting young one—will pump much needed life/energy into the race and we can put a stake in that monster’s heart once and for all.
Up until this point, I wasn’t too worried about Joe’s chances. But the main argument against him from swing states is his age. And he reinforced that concern last night. If he knows he can’t defeat Trump after last night, he’ll do the right thing and step aside. And we’ll all rally around his decision and support the new candidate.
After being terribly depressed last night, I’m actually excited at the prospect of a younger candidate—one who can get kids/minorities energized.

R107 I'm mostly with you but "we'll all rally around and support the new candidate" belies how complex and chaotic and fractious such a process would likely be. It's not a wave-a-wand kinda thing.
It would have to happen FAST if it is to happen at all. To even appear on all 50 states' ballots the candidate needs to be certified by the party by the first or second week of August. That is BEFORE the DNC Convention. The Dems have been planning to procedurally nominate Biden in time for the balloting issue, before the Convention, and then do the ceremonial nomination at Convention.
Those of us talking about replacing Biden are talking about an unprecedented process where it all would need to happen virtually vs in person. And within the next month. All while the other side is passionately unified behind their GOP nominee.

The relatively small number of swing voters in the swing states will decide the election. All the steadfast Democratic voters in the blue states (and the red states) pledging their loyalty this morning make no difference,

R121, that is a very real possibility. But if you really take a look at what replacing Biden would mean -- how would it even happen? Who would be the replacement? -- it's likely to be even more of a disaster. Today, Biden said No point blank when asked, so all of this is (for now) in the hypothetical realm.
Your "what if..." is all we've got.

Joe Biden is basically a vegetable and keeping him in office is criminal. The idea that this man could act quickly regarding serious decision making should have been in doubt already, but cannot be ignored now. I wonder if anyone is considering RFK Jr. as the possible replacement? None of the other options being discussed seem especially realistic to me. Michelle Obama? I seriously doubt it.

But did she win the presidency? She wasn’t popular with the right people and never was. Her negative ratings going into the election were historically high, only slightly below Trump.
Biden’s popular vote margin was double, and 40,000 votes would have lost him the electoral college.
I was for her, enthusiastically. But you know what is more important? Keeping these motherfucking Republicans out of power.

R128 Yes, keeping a senile man in the Presidency is criminal in most senses of that word, at the very least in that it is irresponsible and wrong to do.

Well he is appearing in North Carolina and is definitely energetic, more like the SOTU speech. I think what happened was a combination of bad strategy (they wanted him to appear presidential and low key) and illness. R133, he’s not senile, so just stop.

R126: I don't think he's senile, but a combination of his known stutter and not feeling well. Most of the time last night he was fine, if not a bit hoarse, but no denying he made a bad first impression from which he never really recovered (yes, there were a couple of times he trailed off later, I realize that).

Biden's cognitive decline has been apparent for quite awhile. He is clearly not up to the task of presidency. I said this on The DL a few weeks ago and got, of course, lambasted for saying the truth. The democratic machine has really fucked up letting this terrible situation get so far, ignoring the truth for so long and actually lying about it. The have acted grossly irresponsibly.

R134 Yet a lot of people still, to this day, claim Reagan was senile in office and should have been removed. But I don't recall Regan publicly having these kind of "episodes" like Biden. The hypocrisy around this with Biden, now, is astounding. I loathe the 2 party system and how everyone clings ridiculously to their party of choice at all costs. We cannot and should not have a president who is not mentally sound, regardless of the party one supports.

A very cynical person would opine that the idea is that he's a stronger candidate than the veep, so he'd be pressured to step down early in second term for a non-white female president to be sworn in for nearly a full term.

I think Biden is up to the task of making decisions as president, but he's not up to the task of communicating his decisions and his vision for the country to the public. He used to be a strong communicator, but now he's a mess -- good one day, terrible the next. His voice is weak and halting, he's constantly clearing his throat, and he loses his train of thought. With Trump being a threat to democracy and having a slight edge in recent polls, we absolutely need someone who can effectively articulate the case against Trump every day for the next four months in a clear and commanding way that resonates with voters. We can't hold our breath every day and pray that today will be one of Biden's "good days."

The time to have suggested different democratic presidential candidates was at least 12 months ago. With less that 4 1/2 months to go, nominating anybody else at this place in time will guarantee a Trump victory in November. Biden has performed stellar for these 3 1/2 years, and it would be a folly to amplify to Biden is incompetent, when Trump is significantly less competent for the presidency.

Joe Biden did have a bad debate. While it was likely to be over-prepped, tired,or that he he had a cold and sore throat and took a cold medication, it still gave bad optics.
However, Trump did not say anything that was not a lie the entire debate. He has been convicted of 34 felonies. He was convicted of raper. He was found guilty of business fraud. He attempted a coup. He tried to subvert and fair election with 5 different states.
But people, primarily in the media, are voicing their opinion that Biden should be the one of the tow to drop out of the campaign for president.

Make of this what you will, but my Fox News loving elderly dad initially wanted other candidates (I was shocked when he said he actually supported Nikki Hailey). But the right wing echo chamber just drowned out everyone else & I think his trial made him some kind of MAGA martyr. Plus, he hates Joe Biden & supports anyone who isn't Joe. So after this episode, I'm sort of hoping for a change (but god help us, not Kamala or Gavin) in that they've vilified Joe for so long, it will take a while (though they'll do it) to build up the hate against someone else.
