Thinking of going to New York for a few days of the US Open later this summer. Any advice?

Go during the first week and get yourself a cheap day session ticket on Ashe or Armstrong. Those courts have roofs so you're guaranteed to see some tennis in case it rains (or if the heat's too much), but you can still access any outside courts in case they have more compelling matches. The price for a cheap ticket on Ashe and Armstrong is comparable to a grounds pass. Don't buy a night session ticket if you have to prioritize. Given the volume of matches during the first few days, the day session inevitably spills over into night and the atmosphere on the outer courts is great.
