Released four years after his death, this cover of Cyndi Lauper’s power ballad was Roy Orbison’s last grasp at pop culture. The poor man endured a lifetime of personal tragedies and several career peaks and valleys, only to drop dead right as his career was on the upswing. He was only 52.

Oh, dear.
Is that like an almost-grasp of English usage?

He had also had his comeback with those other dudes in The Traveling Dingleberries.

Don’t forget owing his comeback to David Lynch and Dean Stockwell!

A lesser hit that one, Op.
He made so much other great music

Orbison did not cover this. The song was written for Orbison, who recorded it in 1987. It was not released until 1992.
Lauper released her cover of it in 1989; Celine Dion hers in 2000.

Bad link— but y’all know the truth

One of my favorite Cyndi covers.

Jason Priestly and Jennifer Connelly looked ethereally gorgeous in the video.
Roy Orbison’s voice was gorgeous as well. I didn’t know that he was only 52 when he died. Fuck, I’m older than that now.
I like the propulsive energy of Cyndi Lauper’s version better. I wonder if someone will ever make a mashup of the two.
Celine Dion, no thank you.

Orbison’s voice was a crazy combination of qualities, really unusual and special. Thank you R5 for clarifying this song’s history. That crescendo highlights the freakish operatic sound of Orbison’s voice. I wonder if he could have reproduced that sound live. He was pretty amazing. I was so happy that many singers celebrated his talent near the end of his short life.

Of course he did it live! WTH?

R10 I meant I wonder if it sounded that amazing live, because the track on OP’s video sounded great, but with mixing and editing (as any album track would). I would have enjoyed hearing him perform that song live.

It did.

I would describe his vocals as in that 3rd stanza “this feeling for you is just burning me up inside” as transcendent.

I adore Cyndi but Orbison's version is on a whole other level. His is art.

I’m filing the suit as I type, r15.
Celine Dion’s version manages to strip the song of Orbison’s dreamy delivery and Lauper’s longing and urgency, infusing it instead with a slightly discofied blandness that suburban housewives can tap a spoon to on the mug they are cradling.

But with a French accent! With elan!

^ Elan Celine Dion... I feel so French

Celine Dion doing twangy rock is always an acquired taste BUT. But, she sings effortlessly and soaringly and it's a good song so overall I give it a B. Not many singers today can flat out sing like Celine with those bell tones.

In dreams I walk with him In dreams I talk with him
Thank you OP

Did not know Jason Priestly and his giant cock were in the video.

Orbison had 2 big hits in 1992 in the UK - I Drove All Night was top 10 and Crying with k.d. lang was top 20.
