The playing styles of European and South American national teams are so different. Most of the European teams have looked worried and tentative. South American teams are out for blood.

by Anonymousreply 2June 24, 2024 11:49 PM

Costa Rica draws with Brazil! Pura vida!

by Anonymousreply 3June 25, 2024 3:16 AM

Brazil's fall from grace is abismal.

The U.S being that high is ridiculous. Rooting for Argentina, obviously and if not for Colombia.

NOT rooting for Mexico or the U.S.

by Anonymousreply 4June 25, 2024 3:23 AM

I'm interested to see how Argentina develop in the next game or two because they fell off a lot in the last year. I think Uruguay are slightly more likely to win the trophy but Scaloni seems to be trying new things.

by Anonymousreply 5June 25, 2024 7:26 PM

Was Peru's red card the correct call?

by Anonymousreply 6June 26, 2024 12:12 AM

Yes, he was in the process of making a tackle but going studs up into someone's leg can result in a serious injury so it's seen as reckless whether he gets the ball or not.

by Anonymousreply 7June 26, 2024 12:56 AM

Argentina got a well deserved 2nd win though it really shouldn't have been this hard.

by Anonymousreply 8June 26, 2024 3:06 AM

Mexico v Ecuador is going to be an intense match!

by Anonymousreply 9June 27, 2024 2:32 PM

Fucking Ecuadorians😔

What a fucking racket the merchandising is.

$180.00 bucks for a freaking Mexican team Jersey. Insane!

by Anonymousreply 10June 27, 2024 5:54 PM

R10, if you want officially licensed merchandise, you have to pay up!

by Anonymousreply 11June 27, 2024 8:44 PM

This is a fun game. Shame about the red card.

by Anonymousreply 12June 27, 2024 10:45 PM

Damn, Panama played dirty.

by Anonymousreply 13June 28, 2024 12:00 AM

Yeah, they did.

by Anonymousreply 14June 28, 2024 12:51 AM

So will Tim Weah be benched for the game against Uruguay?

by Anonymousreply 15June 28, 2024 1:05 AM

Yes, his suspension should be for one match.

Uruguay are looking good for the title. Argentina haven't been bad so far but they rely heavily on Messi's goalscoring and he's been playing through injury. The way Uruguay played with Bolivia until they tired out and then annihilated them was impressive.

by Anonymousreply 16June 28, 2024 1:09 PM

I’d rather have Uruguay win than fucking Argentina.

Fuck messi and all his fucking fans.

by Anonymousreply 17June 28, 2024 3:06 PM

Anyway, the best the USA can hope for is Bielsa resting key players given that first place is all but guaranteed. A draw could be enough if Panama doesn't beat Bolivia. I wouldn't say a win is impossible, the USA is a good team, but Uruguay is very well managed and has several players who can make a difference.

by Anonymousreply 18June 28, 2024 3:43 PM

Canadians should have received a red card for that elbow to the head.

by Anonymousreply 19June 30, 2024 12:33 AM

Uruguay's Manuel Ugarte is such a cutie pie. I loved when last year he subtly called Rodrigo de Paul "Messi's Cocksucker".

by Anonymousreply 20June 30, 2024 10:41 PM

R20 who isn't Messi's cocksucker (I include myself).

Mexico is out. Well deserved.

by Anonymousreply 21July 1, 2024 2:36 AM

That ref is in the USA v Uruguay game was bonkers.

What happens after something like that? Will the ref be fired and never seen again?

by Anonymousreply 22July 2, 2024 2:21 PM

Spanish referee Lahoz was sent home by FIFA after he booked almost all the players in the Argentina-Netherlands game in the World Cup in 2022. He retired at the end of that season. Two more Spanish referees have been sent away from the Euros by UEFA.

I feel sorry for the USA, that Uruguay goal was clearly offside.

by Anonymousreply 23July 2, 2024 6:37 PM

Canada vs Venezuela was bonkers: bad refereeing, the goal of the tournament, Canada missing open goals and both teams seemingly competing to lose. Great entertainment and I'm happy for Canada.

by Anonymousreply 24July 6, 2024 3:17 PM

Canada, good but not great players, Marsch as coach, achieving dreams.

USA, a golden generation, GGG as coach, shit the bed.

This isn't hard to figure out.

by Anonymousreply 25July 6, 2024 3:33 PM

Heads beginning to roll, and deservedly so.

An ugly brawl in the stands - Colombia supporters were abusing the families of the Uruguayan players, then Darwin Nunez climbed into the stands to get involved in the altercation. The mother of another Uruguayan player fainted.

by Anonymousreply 27July 11, 2024 12:16 PM

R27 What a war that game was - Colombia winning after having only 10 players for 45 min. Although they'll be an underdog to Argentina on Sunday, I wouldn't bet against. They now have the longest string of undefeated matches of any team in the world.

by Anonymousreply 28July 11, 2024 2:43 PM

So there’s people trying to get into the game without tickets?

Just trying to push their way in?

What trash.

by Anonymousreply 29July 15, 2024 12:26 AM

Organisation and security are dreadful. I'm not sure whether CONMEBOL or the local organisers are more at fault. It seems to have been a money-grabbing exercise for the most part.

by Anonymousreply 30July 15, 2024 12:37 AM

Why does everything have to be such a shitshow these days?

by Anonymousreply 31July 15, 2024 12:39 AM

I think Argentina will probably focus on surviving the first half. Colombia are the better team.

by Anonymousreply 32July 15, 2024 1:55 AM

What the hell, isn't Argentina the reigning world champion?

by Anonymousreply 33July 15, 2024 3:20 AM

They've declined a bit in the last year. They're still good, but arguably not the best in the world anymore. Also, Colombia are a genuine dark horse in this tournament. They're really good.

by Anonymousreply 34July 15, 2024 3:44 AM

R33 and America's champion now, bro

by Anonymousreply 35July 15, 2024 4:10 AM

Shame for Colombia, but what a run it's been for Argentina. What a great campaign by Lautaro Martinez. It's a nice note for Di Maria to retire on.

by Anonymousreply 36July 15, 2024 4:24 AM

Colombia could have taken it or at least scored in the 1st half. But somehow Argentina was able to stop them and by the second they lost steam. Nevertheless they played an excellent tournament.

by Anonymousreply 37July 15, 2024 4:36 AM

The Euros final was like watching a game of shuffleboard compared to this. South American football is not for the faint of heart.

by Anonymousreply 38July 15, 2024 5:16 AM

Did Emi Martinez hump anything?

by Anonymousreply 39July 15, 2024 9:47 AM

Unfortunately not me R39

by Anonymousreply 40July 15, 2024 12:38 PM

The camera panned away from him when he received his goalkeeper of the tournament award so sadly we'll never know.

by Anonymousreply 41July 15, 2024 1:45 PM

Can the American team really improve all that much between now and 2026 when Trump opens the World Cup? Won't it be depressing if they're knocked out in the group stage already?

by Anonymousreply 42July 15, 2024 1:51 PM

Spanish coach, Luis de la Fuente, apparently has signaled interest in being new USMNT coach. It's hard to know why he would want it... do we really pay more $ than Spain, or is it just a huge challenge? It would be an enormous benefit to USMNT, who has a US "Golden Generation" in terms of talent and a success record of cheap tin.

by Anonymousreply 43July 15, 2024 6:13 PM

R43, apparently the USMNT would pay at least $1 million more than Spain.

by Anonymousreply 44July 15, 2024 6:24 PM

[quote]Unfortunately not me [R39]

I bet he fucks like a beast, a big crazy guy like that.

by Anonymousreply 45July 15, 2024 7:03 PM

[quote]Can the American team really improve all that much between now and 2026 when Trump opens the World Cup?

You misspelled "Biden."

This is why we cannot have nice things. We had a goodnatured football thread going until troll R42 came along leaving a trail of stench. Proud of yourself?

by Anonymousreply 46July 15, 2024 9:32 PM

Oh god, get a sense of humour and stop overreacting, Mary at 46. What a precious little snowflake.
